Ladies and Gentlemen Aviation is one of the industries that show the highest global crosslinking. How sensitive our system is, with respect to external influences, becomes obvious in the current pandemic situation. After a long period of growth, the aviation industry is currently confronted with exceptional economic challenges. At the same time, we have to reshape our whole sector for a suc- cessful future. This is way beyond coping with the global dimen- sions of the pandemic event. Main drivers of change are also the strengthening of societal values and the enhanced consid- eration of responsibility towards protecting the climate. Techno- logical game changers and completely new business models may in addition sustainably influence a well-working system. For this reason, the partners of Bauhaus Luftfahrt put emphasis on building a research institution in the sense of a think tank. In order to detect and understand “weak signals” in all these areas for potential significant changes ahead. Due to its pre-competi- tive role, it enables the national aviation industry to follow new technological pathways early enough to derive options for a robust development perspective. Bauhaus Luftfahrt is perform- ing that role now for more than 15 years in the regional, national, and international context. With DLR joining in as a funding mem- ber in the last year, another important step has been taken for a stronger national interconnection of the research activities in aviation. The Yearbook 2020 provides you, dear reader, with a small glimpse into the broad spectrum of topics covered by our think tank for aviation. Your Lars Wagner Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren Die Luftfahrt ist einer der am stärksten global vernetzten Wirt- schaftsbereiche. Wie sensibel unser System für äußere Störun- gen ist, führt uns die aktuelle Pandemie sehr deutlich vor Augen. Nach einer langen Wachstumsphase steht die Luftfahrtindustrie nun vor besonderen unternehmerischen Herausforderungen. Zugleich gilt es, unsere gesamte Branche auch in dieser Zeit für eine erfolgreiche Zukunft vorzubereiten. Dabei geht es nicht nur um die Reaktion auf pandemische Ereignisse globaler Dimen- sion. Maßgebliche Treiber von Veränderung sind auch die Stär- kung gesellschaftlicher Werte und das Wahrnehmen von Verant- wortung beim Schutz des Klimas. Zudem können technologische Gamechanger und vollständig neue Geschäftsmodelle ein gut funktionierendes System nachhaltig beeinflussen. Aus diesem Grund war es den Partnern des Bauhaus Luftfahrt wichtig, eine Forschungseinrichtung im Sinne eines Thinktanks zu etablieren. In all diesen Bereichen kann sie bereits frühzeitig „schwache Signale“ für potenziell grundlegende Veränderungen erkennen und bewerten. Durch ihre vorwettbewerbliche Funktion wird es der gesamten deutschen Luftfahrtbranche möglich, neue tech- nologische Richtungen rechtzeitig genug einzuschlagen, um Handlungsoptionen für eine robuste Entwicklungsperspektive abzuleiten. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt nimmt diese wichtige Rolle seit über 15 Jahren im regionalen, nationalen und internationa- len Kontext sehr erfolgreich wahr. Mit dem Beitritt des DLR als förderndes Mitglied im vergangenen Jahr wurde ein weiterer Schritt hin zu einer stärkeren nationalen Vernetzung der For- schungsaktivitäten getan. Das vorliegende Jahrbuch gibt Ihnen, liebe Leserin, lieber Leser, einen kleinen Einblick in das breite Themenspektrum unseres Thinktanks für die Luftfahrt. Ihr Lars Wagner

6 7 D R O W E R O F Dear Aviation Enthusiasts The aviation sector is currently faced with huge challenges. While aviation fights against the consequences of the pan- demic, the air transport system has to be reshaped in order to provide society with a means of transport over extended dis- tances, which in the next decades will become climate-neutral and at the same time stay economically sustainable. During this phase, we might need to tackle substantial technological chang- es as well as new business models. But how to back the “right horse” early enough to be well prepared? Bauhaus Luftfahrt has engaged this question as a think tank for aviation since its foun- dation more than 15 years ago and bases its findings on three main characteristics: high interdisciplinarity, solid scientific understanding of the relevant fields, and an increased willing- ness to also think beyond borders. Only in the interplay of these three elements is it possible to identify new approaches and to assess their potential in the wider context of the aviation sys- tem. To cope with this, task-specific competence domains crys- tallised, which have to provide a sufficient scientific foundation. In these competence domains, there are currently around 40 researchers from 14 disciplines engaged, among those approx. half of them as postdocs with proven expertise in their individu- al field. The new structure of this Yearbook takes reference to the intensive interdisciplinary basic idea and uses the novel “Navigator” to highlight the competence domains, which main- ly contributed to the topic at hand. Während der Luftfahrtsektor mit den Konsequenzen der Pande- mie kämpft, gilt es, den Luftverkehr so umzubauen, dass wir der Gesellschaft langfristig klimaneutral und gleichzeitig wirtschaft- lich nachhaltig ein effizientes Transportmittel über lange Strecken zur Verfügung stellen können. Hierbei haben wir es mit teilweise grundlegenden Veränderungen bei den Technologien, aber auch den Geschäftsmodellen zu tun. Nur wie kann man frühzeitig genug auf das „richtige Pferd“ setzen? Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt beschäftigt sich als Thinktank für die Luftfahrt schon seit über 15 Jahren mit dieser Frage und greift dabei auf drei wesentliche Merkmale zurück: hohe Interdisziplinarität, gutes wissenschaft- liches Verständnis in relevanten Themenfeldern und hohe Bereitschaft, auch radikale Gedanken zuzulassen. Erst im Wechselspiel dieser drei Elemente ist es möglich, neue Ansätze zu identifizieren und sie im Gesamtkontext auf ihr Potenzial zu bewerten. Um dieser Aufgabe gerecht zu werden, haben sich am Bauhaus Luftfahrt konkrete Kompetenzbereiche herauskris- tallisiert, die eine ausreichende wissenschaftliche Basis mitbrin- gen müssen. In diesen Kompetenzbereichen sind aktuell ca. 40 Forscher*innen aus 14 Fachrichtungen engagiert, davon ca. die Hälfte mit abgeschlossener Promotion und ausgewiesener Fachexpertise in ihrem jeweiligen Feld. Die neue Struktur dieses Jahrbuches wird der intensiven interdisziplinären Grundidee gerecht und identifiziert über den neuen „Navigator“ die Kom- petenzbereiche, die zur Erarbeitung des jeweiligen Themenbe- reichs beigetragen haben. The compe- tence domain “Sustainable Development & Policies” explores this area of tension by evalu- ating the climate impact of different sustainable solutions. Further, policy analyses, supported by econometric studies, give recommendations for a reasonable regulative framework. Finally, scenario simulations reveal holistic and cost- efficient pathways towards climate neutrality. Energy & Fuels The competence domain “Energy & Fuels” assesses various energy technologies with respect to their potential contribution to achieve the climate targets of the aviation industry. The individual supply chains are analysed from the production of the primary energy carrier to the use phase in the aircraft. Dazu werden die jeweiligen Bereitstellungsketten von der primären Energieerzeugung bis zu deren Nutzung im Fluggerät untersucht. Wichtige Kompetenzen sind die Quantifizierung der jeweiligen Produktionspotenziale, die Kos- ten- und Lebenszyklusanalyse sowie die Tech- nologieanalyse zukünftiger Energieoptionen für den Luftverkehr. I N O T A N A L P X E Network, Fleet, and Operations This competence domain applies methods of operations research such as modelling, simula- tion, and optimisation of intermodal travel chains, airline networks, as well as aircraft utilisation and fleet planning. The aim is to better anticipate new air vehicle market segments interacting with ground transportation modes, possible operational efficiency improvements, as well as future air vehicle design and techno- logy requirements. Airframe & Systems Design The potential assessment of radical technolo- gies with the complex interactions inherent to integrated aircraft design requires versatile and agile skills, which are provided by the “Airframe & Systems Design” competence domain. In order to accommodate fast analyses providing results on overall aircraft level, Bauhaus Luft- fahrt employs methods with various solution- oriented levels of detail. Integrated in flexible frameworks, these methods enable multidiscip- linary optimisation and analysis. Propulsion System Design Ultra-efficient propulsion systems are key dri- vers for sustainable aviation. This domain con- centrates the competences around advanced motive power technologies, thermodynamics, performance calculation, and multidisciplinary conceptual design integration. The technical knowledge covered includes advanced gas tur- bine and revolutionary heat engines, hybrid- electric power systems and electrochemical key components, hydrogen, and Boundary Layer Ingesting propulsion integration. Technology Radar The early detection of disruptive technologies and of their ultimate physical performance capability is the key to long-term, sustainable innovations in aviation. The Technology Radar of Bauhaus Luftfahrt acts as an anten- na for step-change technological advancements and design-driving developments in the domains of energy, materials, photonics, sensors, and information. In order to quantitatively analyse and assess future technologies, a specially developed methodology based on scientific principles is used. As guidance to the future development of sound overall concepts, performance potentials are determined in the aeronautical context at various levels of complexity. Lifetime extension through Fatigue Damage Index A ircraft structures are subjected to a variety of loads throughout their service life, leading to fatigue. To avoid structural failure during operation, conservative assumptions are made at the time of entry into service to determine the maximum permissible number of flight cycles and flight hours. However, since each flight stresses the aircraft differently, not all airframes have been stressed according to these assump- tions at the time of retirement. Extending structural life current- ly requires additional, costly large-scale structural testing and selective modifications to the airframe. Therefore, a new retirement criterion based on the Fatigue Damage Index (FDI) was proposed and investigated. The crite- rion takes into account the actual stress on the aircraft, thus enabling their individual retirement while complying with safe- ty requirements. It is based on the continuous recording of fatigue-driving operational parameters throughout the aircraft lifetime. Sample data containing 95 % of Airbus A320 worldwide flight movements over two years suggest that an extended decom- missioning criterion allows a significant extension of the aver- age aircraft life. The impact on individual aircraft within the fleet varies, depending on the operational parameters monitored. These results highlight the potential to increase aircraft service life by introducing stress monitoring with an FDI while not reducing their safety. Lebenszeitverlängerung mittels Fatigue Damage Index Flugzeugstrukturen sind während ihrer gesamten Lebensdauer vielfältigen Belastungen ausgesetzt, die zu Ermüdung führen. Um dadurch hervorgerufenes Strukturversagen während des Betriebes zu vermeiden, wird mittels konservativer Annahmen bereits zum Zeitpunkt der Indienststellung die maximal zulässi- ge Anzahl von Flugzyklen und Flugstunden bestimmt. Da jedoch jeder Flug das Flugzeug anders belastet, sind nicht alle Flugzeugzellen zum Zeitpunkt der Ausmusterung entspre- chend dieser Annahmen beansprucht worden. Eine Verlänge- rung der Strukturlebensdauer erfordert aktuell zusätzliche, kos- tenintensive Großstrukturversuche und selektive Modifikationen an der Flugzeugzelle. Daher wurde ein neues Ausmusterungskriterium basierend auf dem Fatigue Damage Index (FDI) vorgeschlagen und untersucht. Das Kriterium berücksichtigt die tatsächliche Beanspruchung der Flugzeuge und ermöglicht so ihre individuelle Stilllegung bei Einhaltung der Sicherheitsanforderungen. Es basiert auf der kontinuierlichen Erfassung ermüdungstreibender Betriebspara- meter während der gesamten Flugzeuglebensdauer. Stichprobendaten, die 95 % der weltweiten Airbus-A320-Flug- bewegungen über zwei Jahre enthalten, legen nahe, dass ein erweitertes Stilllegungskriterium eine deutliche Verlängerung der durchschnittlichen Lebensdauer des Flugzeuges ermöglicht. Die Auswirkung auf einzelne Flugzeuge innerhalb der Flotte variiert, abhängig von den überwachten Betriebsparametern. Fortschritt und Potenzial der intelligenten Robotik für die Luftfahrt Intelligente Robotik verspricht erhöhte Effizienz, Effektivität, Flexibilität und Qualität in Produktion und Wartung vor dem Hintergrund zunehmender Produktvielfalt und Volatilität der Chargengröße sowie der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit bei kleinen Losgrößen. Dies wird durch den Paradigmenwechsel von einem prozessorientierten Linear- zu einem produktorientierten Matrix- modell ermöglicht. In diesem Modell kann derselbe Roboter in einer Fertigungs- oder Wartungsstation Aufgaben in verschiede- nen Prozessschritten autonom bzw. kooperativ in dynamischen Umgebungen ausführen. In der Luftfahrtindustrie sind Einsatzinitiativen von kollaborati- ven intelligenten Robotern in matrixartigen „Shopfloors“ zwar bereits unterwegs. Laut einer Potenzialanalyse des Bauhaus Luftfahrt ist aber im nächsten Jahrzehnt eine Beschleunigung der Anwendung solcher Lösungen in Gebieten wie Material- verarbeitung, Werkstückmanipulation, additive Fertigung, Int- ralogistik, Inspektion und Reparatur zu erwarten. Die Kombina- tion von autonomem Transport, Umgebungswahrnehmung und Morphismus wird Präzision und Autonomie der Roboter bei Fortbewegung im und um das Flugzeug und seine Komponen- ten sowie bei Manipulationshandlungen erhöhen. Weiterhin erkennt die Potenzialanalyse, dass der fundierte Vergleich von Industrierobotern bei Entwurf eines Matrixmo- dells stets eine wichtige Rolle spielen wird. Traditionell wird die Effektivität intelligenter Robotik mittels Grad an Aufgabener- füllung und benötigter Zeit gemessen. Die intelligente Industrie- robotik erhöht die (Kosten-)Effizienz und Benutzerfreundlichkeit solcher neuen Funktionen. In Zukunft wird die Standardisierung von Eigenschaften und Metriken unterschiedlicher Roboter an Bedeutung gewinnen, um die Trade-offs unter den Fähigkeits-, Komplexitäts- und Umgebungsstrukturierungsniveaus zu beherr- schen. This is enabled by a paradigm shift from a process-oriented linear model to a product-oriented matrix model. In this model, the same robot in a manufacturing or maintenance station can perform tasks in different process steps autonomously or co- operatively in dynamic environments. In the aviation industry, deployment initiatives of collaborative intelligent robots in matrix-like shopfloors are already underway. However, according to a potential analysis of Bauhaus Luftfahrt, the next decade will see an acceleration in the application of these solutions in areas such as material processing, work piece manipulation, additive manufacturing, intralogistics, inspection, and repair. The combination of autonomous transportation, envi- ronmental perception, and morphism will increase the precision and the autonomy of robots during locomotion in and around the aircraft and its components as well as during manipulation actions. Furthermore, the potential analysis recognises that the well- founded comparison of industrial robots will increasingly play an important role in designing a matrix model. Traditionally, the effectiveness of intelligent robotics is measured by the degree of task completion and by completion time. Intelligent industrial robotics increases the (cost) efficiency and usability of such new features. Potentials of object detection for additive manufacturing in aviation A dditive manufacturing is increasingly used in the aviation industry to build complex components with high quality requirements. However, this demands for a high degree of pro- cess control in production to prevent defect formation as well as the development of highly reliable, economical and thus auto- mated inspection measures for quality assurance to avoid defect-induced component failure. Bauhaus Luftfahrt, in collab- oration with an aircraft parts manufacturer, investigated the potential of image-based defect detection using machine learn- ing methods. In selective laser melting, one method for defect detection is given by taking photographic images of each powder layer that are examined by experts ex-situ. New methods from image recognition based on neural networks hold the potential for automated evaluation and fault detection. Compared to classical image processing, these methods offer the advantage of achieving a good defect detection rate even for changing pro- duction environments and with little training data. To investigate this effect, Bauhaus Luftfahrt, in co-operation with the project partner, has trained object recognition for sev- eral defect classes in a demonstrator with the help of a few dozen to a hundred training images, using a suitable network architecture and partially pre-trained networks. The detection performance is quantified by standardised metrics and illus- trates the potential of automated defect detection. This enables flexible in-situ monitoring with real-time defect recognition for specialised manufacturers in environments with high require- ments and small batch sizes. Potenziale der Objekterkennung für die Fertigung in der Luftfahrt Die additive Fertigung wird in der Luftfahrt zunehmend für komplexe Bauteile mit hohem Qualitätsanspruch angewandt. Dies erfordert ein hohes Maß an Prozessbeherrschung in der Produktion, um Fehlstellenbildung vorzubeugen, sowie die Entwicklung höchst zuverlässiger, wirtschaftlicher und damit automatisierter Prüfmaßnahmen für die Qualitätssicherung, um defektinduziertes Bauteilversagen zu vermeiden. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt untersuchte in Zusammenarbeit mit einem Flugzeug- teilehersteller das Potenzial von bildbasierter Fehlererkennung mit Methoden aus dem maschinellen Lernen. Beim selektiven Laserschmelzen kann von der jeweils aktuellen Pulverschicht ein Bild aufgenommen und ex-situ von Experten auf Fehlstellen hin untersucht werden. Neue Methoden aus der Bilderkennung auf Grundlage von neuronalen Netzen bergen das Potenzial einer automatisierten Auswertung. Gegenüber klassischer Bildverarbeitung bieten diese den Vorteil, auch für wechselnde Produktionsumgebungen und selbst mit wenigen Trainingsdaten eine gute Fehlererkennungsrate zu erreichen. Um dies nachzuweisen, hat das Bauhaus Luftfahrt in Zusam- menarbeit mit dem Projektpartner in einem Demonstrator mit Hilfe von wenigen Dutzend bis Hundert Trainingsbildern eine Objekterkennung für mehrere Fehlerklassen trainiert – unter Einsatz einer passenden Netzwerkarchitektur und teilweise vortrainierten Netzen. Die Erkennungsleistung wird durch stan- dardisierte Metriken quantifiziert und verdeutlicht das Potenzial einer automatisierten Fehlererkennung. Damit wird auch für spezialisierte Hersteller in Umgebungen mit hohen Anforderun- gen und geringer Losgröße eine flexible In-situ-Überwachung mit Echtzeiterkennung von Fehlstellen ermöglicht. Additive manufacturing offers unprecedented opportunities for directly producing weight- and performance-optimised, functionally integrated components with complex geometry. To revolutionise the way aircraft are designed, built, and repaired, manufacturing defects previously detected only after printing pose a major hurdle. Machine learning allows for en suring highest part quality during the manufacturing process through real-time monitoring and simultaneous control. This opens up future-oriented perspectives for industrial breakthrough and for exploiting the potential for fuel savings, advanced maintenance, and supply chain flexibility. Within the scope of the Bauhaus Luftfahrt Trend Monitor, manifold social, technological, economic, envi- ronmental, or political developments are captured, ana- lysed, and evaluated in terms of implications for various stakeholders in aviation and overall mobility. Enabling an early and comprehensive detection mechanism and the consecutive assessment provides insights for the aviation community and beyond in regard to emerging and long- term developments, including the future of passenger travel, potential business applications and partnerships, or strategic developments. The future of intermodal travel in 2035 C ontactless and seamless intermodal travel is gaining new momentum, for both passengers and the aviation industry. How might the intermodal air travel from door to door (D2D) of the future look like? What are the driving trends for the Euro- pean market? These questions were explored in a future-orient- ed, Delphi-based scenario study conducted by Bauhaus Luft- fahrt and the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management. The focus was on intermodal travel chains that include a long-haul flight. Various stakeholders along this type of travel chain were interviewed as part of the study. The panel consisted of experts from academia, airports, and airlines as well as representatives from public transportation and the automotive industry. Based on the results of a cluster analysis, three possible future scenar- ios for the year 2035 were developed: (1) personalised travel, (2) integrated travel, and (3) the game changer. Across all scenarios, the study results predicted that digitisation and personalisation might become significant key drivers. Thus, it is becoming increasingly important to offer multimodal transportation and travel products that range from low-cost (standardised) to pre- mium (individualised). Future passengers might most likely want to spend their travel time in a way that creates personal value for them. In this context, differentiated passenger needs can open up new business opportunities, which are not yet covered by the industry. Examples include services at the air- port, such as dedicated working areas, play areas for children and families, as well as sports and spa offerings. Basierend auf den Ergebnissen einer Clusteranalyse wurden dann drei mögliche Zukunftsszenarien für das Jahr 2035 erarbeitet: (1) personalisiertes Reisen, (2) integriertes Reisen und (3) der Gamechanger. Über alle Szena- rien hinweg prognostizierten die Studienergebnisse, dass Digi- talisierung und Personalisierung bedeutende Schlüsselfaktoren werden. Es wird daher immer wichtiger, multimodale Trans- portangebote und Reiseprodukte anzubieten, die von preiswert (standardisiert) bis Premium (individualisiert) reichen. Künftige Passagiere möchten ihre Reisezeit höchstwahrscheinlich in einer wertsteigernden Weise verbringen. Aviation is experiencing an unprecedented crisis since the start of the pandemic. Some changes that have become necessary in the short term, such as the steep increase in virtual exchanges as a substitute for business travel, will remain and continue to influence the demand for and design of air travel in the longer term. With regard to this and further restructuring measures, the air transport industry needs to realign existing business models as well as to understand changing passenger requirements in detail. These are essential building blocks for ensuring future resilience in the sector. Der Luftverkehr befindet sich seit Beginn der Pandemie in einer nie zuvor dagewesenen Krise. Einige kurzfristig notwen- dig gewordene Veränderungen, wie der stark gestiegene virtu- elle Austausch als Ersatz für Geschäftsreisen, werden bleiben und die Nachfrage nach und die Gestaltung von Flugreisen auch längerfristig beeinflussen. Die Lufttransportbranche ist hinsichtlich dieser und weiterer Umstrukturierungen gefordert, bisher bestehende Geschäftsmodelle neu auszurichten sowie veränderte Passagierbedürfnisse entsprechend detailliert zu verstehen. Dies sind essenzielle Bausteine für den Ausbau zukünftiger Resilienz des Sektors.

36 37 Wie verändert COVID-19 den Luftfahrtsektor? Die Luftfahrt hat 2020 einen historischen Einbruch der Passa- gierzahlen erlebt. Aktuelle Szenarien gehen von einer Erholung des Sektors auf Vor-Pandemie-Niveau in etwa drei bis fünf Jah- ren aus [1]. Akteure sehen sich einer Vielzahl neuer Herausfor- derungen und Chancen gegenüber, wie der kurzfristigen Implementierung von Hygienemaßnahmen oder der Anpassung an internationale Reiseregelungen. Somit rücken die Flugzeug- kabine und Gesundheitsrisiken für Passagiere verstärkt in den Fokus. Fluggesellschaften haben Maßnahmen wie Masken- pflicht, weitere Reduzierung der Bordverpflegung, freie Mittel- sitze sowie Schnelltests und Temperaturmessung realisiert. Für das Boarding gibt es festgelegte Reihenfolgen, Handgepäckres- triktionen und Mindestabstände zwischen Passagieren. Diese Maßnahmen verlängern den Turnaround um ca. 15 Minuten [2]. Ein neues, detaillierteres Passagier-Bewegungsmodell der Boardingsimulation PAXelerate ermöglicht die Bewertung sol- cher Maßnahmen auf den Einsteigevorgang. Angewandt auf einen Airbus A320 sorgt ein Sicherheitsabstand für 67 % länge- res Boarding; freie Mittelsitze gleichen diesen Zeitverlust auf Kosten des Ladefaktors wieder aus [3]. Längerfristige Verände- rungen im Luftfahrtsektor bezüglich heutiger Geschäftsmodelle oder Flottenstrukturen von Airlines sind ebenfalls bereits zu erkennen. Gerade im Hinblick auf diese Aspekte wird Resilienz in Zukunft eine größere Rolle spielen. Der derzeitige virtuelle geschäftliche Austausch birgt z. How is COVID-19 changing the aviation sector? A viation has experienced a historic downturn in passenger numbers in 2020. Current scenarios predict a recovery of this sector to pre-pandemic levels in about three to five years [1]. Stakeholders face a variety of new challenges and oppor- tunities, such as implementing hygiene measures in the short term or adapting to international travel regulations. Thus, a high- er focus is shifting towards the aircraft cabin and health risks for passengers. Airlines have implemented measures such as man- datory masks, further removal of in-flight catering, vacant mid- dle seats, and quick tests and body temperature screenings. Regarding the boarding, there are fixed sequences, carry-on baggage restrictions, and an increased distance between pas- sengers. These measures prolong the turnaround time by about 15 minutes [2]. A new, more detailed passenger movement model of the boarding simulation PAXelerate allows the evalua- tion of different measures on the boarding process. Applied to an Airbus A320, an increased safety distance leads to a 67 % longer boarding time; free middle seats compensate this time loss at the expense of the load factor [3]. Longer-term changes in the aviation sector with regard to current business models or fleet structures of airlines are also already apparent. Especially with regard to these aspects, resilience will play a greater role in the future. The move towards current virtual business exchanges, for example, holds the potential to impact the nature and frequency of business travel significantly also in the future. Transformation pathways based on functioning market mechanisms must be identified, while at the same time aviation’s capacity to innovate must be ensured. Ranging from urban to intercontinental air traffic and taking growing environmental awareness and high levels of uncertain- ty in the long-term market development into account, the goal is to understand the innovation potential at an early stage. Efficiency gains do not suffice to decouple growth in the avia- tion industry from the future trend of emissions. A major chal- lenge is to fully substitute fossil kerosene by bringing alternative climate-friendly fuels to the market and to achieve this in an economically viable way. Renewable carbon dioxide and hydro- gen are key enablers for this transformation. Hydrogen is not only essential for e.g. bio and Power-to-Liquid (PtL) fuels, but is also an interesting fuel option in its liquid form (LH2). The produc- tion of LH2 is more efficient and less costly than that of, for example, PtL fuel. However, the necessary investments in new infrastructure and aircraft integrating LH2 technology represent a hurdle for implementation. Environmental and climate goals are also affecting future aircraft design. In addition to the classic efficiency gains in new con- cepts, emissions reductions require synergistic aircraft configu- rations with more integrated propulsion concepts. Only through

Um das Wachstum von der Emissionsentwicklung zu entkoppeln, reichen Effizienzgewinne nicht aus. Eine große Herausforderung ist es, fossiles Kerosin vollständig zu ersetzen und dazu alternative, kli- mafreundliche Kraftstoffe wirtschaftlich sinnvoll auf den Markt zu bringen. Dabei kommen erneuerbarem Kohlendioxid und Wasserstoff eine Schlüsselrolle zu. Letzterer ist nicht nur für z. B. Bio- und Power- to-Liquid-(PtL-)Kraftstoffe essenziell, sondern auch in flüssiger Form (LH2) interessant. Er ist effizienter und günstiger herzustellen als z. B. PtL-Kraftstoff. Die nötigen Investitionen in neue Infrastruktur und Flugzeuge mit entsprechenden LH2-Technologien stellen jedoch eine Hürde dar. Die Umwelt- und Klimaziele verändern auch den zukünftigen Flug- zeugentwurf. Neben den klassischen Effizienzgewinnen bei neuen

42 43 Towards fossil-free and environmentally friendly aviation A ir travel is a need for many people and an important business activity for numerous companies. However, air travel is also increasingly challenged by the climate impact of aviation. In 2017, direct emissions from aviation added up to 3.8 % of total CO2 emissions in the European Union [1]. The so-called non-CO2 emissions make an additional contribution to the overall climate impact of aviation [2]. In recent decades, aviation research has shown that a number of options exist to make aviation more sustainable. If these options are implemented so that climate neutrality can be achieved by mid-century, a legitimate and long-term growth perspective will emerge. It is essential to design holistic transi- tion pathways that reflect changing passengers’ preferences, technological advances in the aircraft design, and the potential of sustainable fuels. In the following, selected aspects of this complex endeavour are examined. These are based on the fol- lowing key questions: 1. Which pathway can lead aviation to CO2 neutrality by 2050? 2. How does the increasing environmental awareness among passengers affect the future of aviation? 3. What is the potential of sustainable fuels? Die Luftfahrtforschung hat in den letzten Jahrzehnten aufge- zeigt, dass eine Reihe von Optionen existiert, um die Luftfahrt nachhaltiger zu gestalten. Wenn es die Luftfahrtbranche schafft, diese Optionen umzusetzen, um bis zur Mitte des Jahrhunderts Klimaneutralität zu erreichen, entsteht eine legitime und lang- fristige Wachstumsperspektive. Es gilt, ganzheitliche Transi- tionspfade zu entwerfen, die sich ändernde Passagierpräferen- zen ebenso abbilden wie technologische Fortschritte im Flugzeugentwurf und Potenziale nachhaltiger Kraftstoffe. T he Paris Climate Agreement defines the goal to limit global warming preferably to 1.5 °C in comparison to pre-industrial levels. Many climate models assume that this re- quires no further emissions of greenhouse gases after 2050. Even if no explicit “Paris goal” exists for aviation, the question arises if and how such an ambitious goal is achievable. There is no silver bullet for this long-term and complex task. Rather, a whole range of innovative options to reduce green- house gas emissions will have to be evaluated, implement- ed, and co-ordinated in such a manner that holistic and con- sistent sustainability strategies can be derived. Generally speaking, options for emissions reduction in avia- tion can be divided into four broad categories: higher energy efficiency of aircraft, better operational procedures, sustain- able kerosene, as well as new, sustainable energy carriers as, for instance, hydrogen. More efficient aircraft and sus- tainable kerosene show the highest emissions reduction potentials. However, this requires that aircraft technologies are regularly implemented into new aircraft programmes and brought into the global aircraft fleet, and that alternative ker- osene is deployed at substantial market shares by 2030. Only then does an efficient scaling of their potentials seem realistic by 2050. At the same time, CO2 neutrality can hardly be achieved by 2050 by only implementing these two options. Solutions with smaller potentials should also be considered in holistic strategies. The figure on page 46 summarises the potentials of individual measures (coloured areas) over time (according to a scenario study by Bauhaus Luftfahrt). Apart from reducing greenhouse gas emissions, efficiency improvements have an additional, crucial advantage: Due to the reduced fuel demand of a more efficient aircraft fleet, overall energy costs are reduced as well. This is especially relevant if, in the mid-term, more costly sustainable kero- sene will have to be purchased. First results indicate that the increase of energy costs per passenger kilometre for a diver- sified sustainability strategy could remain manageable. Assuming unfavourable developments, costs could increase by around +60 %, and assuming favourable conditions by around +20 % by 2050 (yellow and orange lines, figure on page 46). Considering these positive signals, it becomes even more important to further study this complex field of research.

Welcher Pfad kann die Luftfahrt bis 2050 zur CO2-Neutra- lität führen? Das Pariser Klimaabkommen definiert das Ziel, die Erderwär- mung möglichst auf 1,5 °C im Vergleich zum vorindustriellen Zeitalter zu begrenzen. Viele Klimamodelle gehen davon aus, dass hierfür ab 2050 die Konzentration von Treibhausgasen in der Atmosphäre nicht weiter steigen darf. Auch wenn es bis heute kein explizites „Paris-Ziel“ für die Luftfahrt gibt, stellt sich dennoch die Frage, inwiefern der Luftverkehr ein ent- sprechend ambitioniertes Ziel erreichen könnte. Für diese langfristige und komplexe Aufgabe wird es keinen einfachen Lösungsweg geben. Vielmehr müssen eine ganze Reihe innovativer Optionen zur Treibhausgasminderung bewertet, implementiert und so miteinander koordiniert werden, dass sich ganzheitliche und konsistente Nachhaltig- keitsstrategien ergeben. Grundsätzlich lassen sich Optionen zur Emissionsreduktion im Luftfahrtsektor in vier Kategorien aufteilen: höhere Ener- gieeffizienz der Flugzeuge, bessere operationelle Abläufe, nachhaltiges Kerosin und neue, nachhaltige Energieträger wie z. B. Wasserstoff. Dabei zeigen effizientere Flugzeuge und nachhaltiges Kerosin die höchsten Einzelpotenziale zur Treibhausgasminderung. Hierfür gilt es aber, effizientere Flugzeugtechnologien auch regelmäßig in neue Flugzeugpro- gramme zu implementieren und in die Flotte zu bringen sowie alternative Kerosine bis 2030 in substanzielle Markt- anteile umzusetzen. Nur dann erscheint eine effiziente Ska- lierung der Potenziale bis 2050 realistisch. Gleichzeitig lässt sich CO2-Neutralität bis 2050 kaum mit diesen beiden Optionen allein erreichen. Auch Lösungen mit kleineren Potenzialen sollten in einer holistischen Strategie berücksichtigt werden. Die Abbildung auf Seite 46 fasst die Potenziale einzelner Maßnahmen (farbige Flächen) über den Zeitverlauf zusammen (nach einer Szenariostudie des Bau- haus Luftfahrt). Maßnahmen zur Effizienzsteigerung haben neben der Min- derung der Treibhausgasemissionen einen weiteren zen- tralen Vorteil: Durch den niedrigeren Treibstoffbedarf einer effizienteren Flugzeugflotte sinken gleichzeitig die Gesamt- energiekosten, insbesondere dann, wenn mittelfristig teu- rere nachhaltige Kraftstoffe getankt werden müssen. Erste Studien deuten darauf hin, dass bei einer diversifizierten Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie die Steigerung der Energiekosten pro Passagierkilometer beherrschbar bleibt. Unter eher ungünstigen Entwicklungen könnten die Kosten bis 2050 um 60 %, unter eher günstigen um 20 % steigen (gelbe und orange Linien, Abbildung auf Seite 46). In Anbetracht die- ser positiven Signale ist es wichtig, dieses komplexe Thema weiter zu erforschen. 48 49 S L A O G E T A M L C G N T E E M I I Increased environmental awareness among passengers and actions for aviation In Europe, increased environmental awareness points to a general trend: The majority of Europeans see climate change as an essential challenge of today’s society. Many are willing to adapt their mobility behaviour, to use more environmentally friendly means of transport, and to include their personal carbon footprint in travel decisions. This is shown e.g. by a survey of the European Commission (2019). Public pressure for more climate protection is increasing and with it the need for action from the wide range of aviation stakeholders. They are called upon to translate the increasing environmental awareness of passen- gers into concrete actions. Emissions reductions on the passenger side can be achieved not only by lowering demand, but also by CO2 offsettings. How- ever, what are the underlying drivers that can positively influ- ence environmental awareness and the corresponding environ- mentally friendly actions? Bauhaus Luftfahrt investigated this question in a study with subject matter experts. On the one hand, experts mainly agreed that passengers often still under- estimate the real environmental impact of current air traffic. Cheap ticket prices, complicated emissions metrics, and little transparency reinforce this misperception. Airlines are called upon to disclose comprehensibly and transparently the CO2 emissions per passenger and flight and thus allow passengers to make more informed decisions. For this purpose, ecolabels, CO2 calculators in the booking process (adapted to the type of aircraft and route flown), and the use of various media for spe- cific target groups are important levers. Furthermore, aviation needs a transparent, comprehensive, and mandatory CO2 offsetting programme. To ensure that many passengers take advantage of this, such programmes could already be part of the ticket price. Besides airlines, politicians and social movements are also needed as driving parties. Politics should create the framework conditions for a successful CO2 offsetting programme through regulations and taxes and also control them. Social movements are not only responsible for educating the public, but are also called upon to provide infor- mation on various options for reducing emissions. Increasing public pressure could push passengers to demand more envi- ronmentally efficient aircraft for air travel. This especially applies to short-haul routes, as these distances can easily be substitut- ed with more environmentally friendly means of transport such as trains or long-distance buses. With an effective CO2 offsetting programme, the use of environ- mentally friendly aircraft technologies, as well as transparent and comprehensible information, environmental awareness and air travel are not necessarily mutually exclusive for passengers. All this in combination could be an incentive system to continue welcoming passengers on board, to translate increased envi- ronmental awareness into actions, but also to scale technolo- gies and novel fuel options and establish them quickly on the market. Steigendes Umweltbewusstsein der Passagiere und Maßnahmen für die Luftfahrt In Europa deutet das erhöhte Umweltbewusstsein auf eine all- gemeine Trendwende hin: Die große Mehrheit der Europäer sieht den Klimawandel als eine essenzielle Herausforderung unserer heutigen Gesellschaft. Viele sind bereit, ihr Mobilitäts- verhalten anzupassen, umweltfreundlichere Verkehrsmittel zu nutzen und den persönlichen CO2-Fußabdruck in Reiseentschei- dungen einzubeziehen. Das zeigt z. B. eine Umfrage der Euro- päischen Kommission (2019). Der öffentliche Druck für mehr Klimaschutz steigt und damit auch der Handlungsbedarf seitens verschiedenster Akteure in der Luftfahrt. Diese sind angehalten, das steigende Umweltbewusstsein der Passagiere auch in konkretes Handeln zu überführen. Emissionsreduktionen auf der Passagierseite können neben einer Nachfragesenkung auch durch CO2-Offsettings erzielt werden. Was sind jedoch die dahinterliegenden Treiber, die das Umweltbewusstsein und das entsprechende umweltfreund- liche Handeln positiv beeinflussen können? Das Bauhaus Luft- fahrt ist dieser Frage nachgegangen und hat Experten in einer Studie befragt. Passengers, airlines, government, and social movements: Everyone can make their contribution towards sustainability in aviation. Passagiere, Fluggesellschaften, Regierung und soziale Bewegungen: Jeder kann seinen Beitrag zur Nachhaltigkeit in der Luftfahrt leisten.

Zum einen waren sich diese weitestgehend einig, dass Passagiere die wirkliche Umweltbelastung durch den aktuellen Flugverkehr oft noch zu gering einschätzen. Günstige Ticketpreise, komplizierte Emissionsmetriken und wenig Transparenz verstärken diese Wahr- nehmungsverzerrung. Fluggesellschaften sind daher angehalten, den CO2-Ausstoß pro Passagier und Flug verständlicher und transparen- ter offenzulegen und damit Passagieren zu erlauben, informiertere Reiseentscheidungen treffen zu können. Dafür sind z. B. Ecolabels, CO2-Berechner im Buchungsprozess (angepasst an Flugzeugtyp und nachgefragte Strecke) sowie die Nutzung verschiedenster Medien für dezidierte Zielgruppen wichtige Hebel. Des Weiteren braucht die Luftfahrt ein transparentes, flächende- ckendes und verpflichtendes CO2-Offsetting-Programm. Damit die- ses viele Passagiere nutzen, könnten solche Programme bereits im Ticket eingepreist sein. Neben Fluggesellschaften sind hier auch Politik und soziale Bewegungen als treibende Parteien gefragt. Die Politik sollte über Regularien und Steuern die Rahmenbedingungen für ein erfolgreiches CO2-Offsetting-Programm schaffen und diese auch kontrollieren. Soziale Bewegungen leisten nicht nur Aufklä- rungsarbeit in der Öffentlichkeit, sondern sind auch angehalten, über verschiedene Möglichkeiten der Emissionsreduktion zu informie- ren. Der öffentliche Druck könnte zur Folge haben, dass ver- mehrt umwelteffizientere Flugzeuge von Passagieren für eine Flugreise nachgefragt werden. Das gilt vor allem auf der Kurzstrecke, da diese Distanzen leicht mit umweltfreundlicheren Transportmitteln wie dem Zug oder Fernbus substituiert werden können. Durch ein wirkungsvolles CO2-Offsetting-Programm, die Nutzung von umweltfreundlichen Flugzeugtechnologien sowie transparenten und verständlichen Informationen schließen sich Umweltbewusst- sein und Flugreisen für Passagiere nicht unbedingt aus. All dies in Kombination könnte ein Anreizsystem sein, um Passagiere weiterhin an Bord zu begrüßen, dem erhöhten Umweltbewusstsein Taten folgen zu lassen, aber auch, um Technologien und neue Kraftstoffop- tionen zu skalieren und schnellmöglich auf dem Markt zu etablieren. The climate impact per passenger and flight leg The flight’s climate impact (measured here in CO2 per passenger) varies among flight distances. A truly effective and mandatory offsetting programme that calculates the real CO2 price can help to compensate for some of the climate impact of air travel. However, one also needs to keep the non-CO2 emissions in mind. 52 53 S L A O G E T A M L C G N T E E M I I Roadmap for the transition to alternative aviation fuels A future climate-neutral aviation sector will require an almost complete substitution of fossil fuels, but renewable fuels cover only a small share of today’s fuel demand. Current alter- native aviation fuels are mainly based on plant oils, which can- not be scaled towards future demand due to sustainability concerns. Therefore, the bulk of the future energy supply needs to be provided by biofuels from advanced feedstock, solar or electricity-derived fuels [1]. Synthetic kerosenes that are compatible with the existing fleet of aircraft are the most plausible option for the near- to mid-term future, while liquid hydrogen provides an important perspective in the long term [2]. Bauhaus Luftfahrt develops a profound view on various energy options for aviation by contributing system analyses to several collaborative research projects. The support of biofuels should focus on pathways that can convert waste and residue streams or abundantly available biomass feedstock into jet fuel. The pro- duction of solar or electricity-based fuels at scale requires sig- nificant amounts of primary renewable energy as well as the availability of a sustainable carbon source. Key options for car- bon supply include beneficial coupling with biomass conversion processes and the direct extraction of CO2 from the atmos- phere. The carbon source contributes only a moderate fraction to the overall effort for synthetic fuel production from solar or wind energy; nevertheless, this additional effort could play a decisive role in comparison to the direct utilisation of hydrogen as an aviation fuel. Fuel production costs and net CO2 emissions are key performance indicators for a comparison of different energy options; further important indicators for a holistic assessment include non-CO2 climate impact, ecological criteria like air quality, biodiversity, land and water demand, as well as the socioeconomic impact of renewable fuel production at scale. Finally, it needs to be considered that aviation is embed- ded in regional and global energy systems. Due to the compa- rably large effort for synthetic jet fuel production, a fast rollout of renewable aviation fuel capacity is not effective if it is based on resource competition with sectors that offer lower CO2 avoidance costs. A measured policy approach should focus on the development and commercialisation of key technologies that can unlock large renewable energy potentials in the mid- to long-term future. Um in Zukunft einen klimaneutralen Luftverkehr zu ermöglichen, ist eine weitge- hende Substitution durch erneuerbare Kraftstoffe erforderlich. Allerdings lassen sich die derzeit eingesetzten pflanzenölbasier- ten Biokraftstoffe, unter Berücksichtigung wichtiger Nachhaltig- keitskriterien, nicht im erforderlichen Umfang erzeugen. Daher muss der Großteil des zukünftigen Energiebedarfs durch fortge- schrittene Biokraftstoffe, solare oder strombasierte Kraftstoffe gedeckt werden [1]. Neben synthetischen Kerosinen, die mit der aktuellen Flotte kompatibel sind, bietet die direkte Nutzung von verflüssigtem Wasserstoff eine wichtige langfristige Pers- pektive [2]. Durch die systemanalytische Beteiligung an Verbundprojekten zu verschiedenen Kraftstoffpfaden entwickelt das Bauhaus Luftfahrt einen fundierten Blick auf die Energieoptionen der Luftfahrt. Die Förderung von Biokraftstoffen sollte sich aus Nachhaltigkeitsüberlegungen auf die Nutzung von Abfall- und Reststoffen fokussieren sowie auf Konversionsverfahren, die umfangreich verfügbare Biomassen zu Kerosin umsetzen. Für die Herstellung großer Mengen solarer oder strombasier- ter Kerosine muss neben den notwendigen Energiemengen auch die Verfügbarkeit einer nachhaltigen Kohlenstoffquelle gewähr- leistet sein. Neben vorteilhaften Kopplungen mit Biomassever- fahren kommt der Direktabscheidung von CO2 aus der Um- gebungsluft hier eine Schlüsselrolle zu. Die Kohlenstoffbereit- stellung trägt zwar nur einen moderaten Anteil zur Gesamtbilanz bei, im Vergleich zu Wasserstoffoptionen kann dieser zusätzliche Aufwand aber entscheidend werden. Neben den Kraftstoffkos- ten und der CO2-Bilanz müssen die verschiedenen Energieopti- onen auch mit Blick auf weitere Indikatoren bewertet werden. Dazu gehören die Klimawirkung auf Reiseflughöhe, weitere ökologische Bewertungskriterien wie Luftreinhaltung, Biodi- versität, Land- und Wasserverbrauch sowie die sozioökono- mischen Auswirkungen einer Produktion großer Mengen erneuerbarer Kraftstoffe. Nicht zuletzt ist die Luftfahrt gemein- sam mit anderen Sektoren in regionale und globale Energiesys- teme eingebunden. Wegen des vergleichsweise hohen Auf- wandes für die Herstellung synthetischer Kerosine ist eine schnelle Ausweitung von Produktionskapazitäten nicht zielfüh- rend, wenn sie in Konkurrenz zu Sektoren mit niedrigeren CO2-Vermeidungskosten steht. Daher sollten mit Augenmaß Schlüsseltechnologien zur Marktreife geführt werden, um in der mittel- bis langfristigen Perspektive große erneuerbare Energiepotenziale erschließen zu können. 56 57 I I S L E U F N O T A V A E R U T U F Geographische Produktionskosten solar-thermochemi- scher Kraftstoffe Die anhaltenden Forderungen nach einer Umstellung von fossi- lem zu nachhaltigem Kerosin führen dazu, dass die Machbarkeit bestimmter Herstellungspfade eingehender diskutiert wird. Hierbei stellt sich die Frage, welche Herstellungsverfahren sowohl ausreichend Kraftstoff zur Verfügung als auch akzeptable Herstellungskosten in Aussicht stellen können. Die Produktion solar-thermochemischer Kraftstoffe hat den Vorteil, dass ledig- lich Wasser, regenerativer Kohlenstoff und als Energiequelle direktes Sonnenlicht notwendig sind. Somit ist offensichtlich, dass Standorte mit hoher Sonneneinstrahlung besonders geeignet sind. Eine detaillierte techno-ökonomische Analyse (TEA) möglicher Standorte fehlte jedoch bisher. Das Besondere an der hier vorgestellten Studie [1] ist, dass sowohl naturräum- liche (hier vor allem die direkte Sonneneinstrahlung, auch „direct normal irradiation“ (DNI) genannt) als auch makroöko- nomische (hier vor allem die Finanzierungskosten im Sinne der „weighted average cost of capital“ (WACC)) Aspekte in die geographische TEA einflossen. Grundsätzlich finden sich in allen wichtigen Großregionen (z. B. Mittelmeerraum, USA, Andenregion, Australien und südliches Afrika) günstige Standorte mit hoher Sonneneinstrahlung für die Produktion solar-thermochemischer Kraftstoffe. Allerdings können naturräumlich günstige Standorte durch zu hohe Finan- zierungskosten ihre Attraktivität verlieren, wie aktuell z. B. in Südafrika, Algerien oder Bolivien. Aufgrund des starken Zusam- menhanges zwischen Finanzierungskosten und Kraftstoffpreis können ebenso Standorte mit etwas geringerer Sonnenein- strahlung durch sehr niedrige Finanzierungskosten interessant werden (z. B. in Israel oder Spanien). Dies zeigt, wie wichtig es ist, naturräumliche und ökonomische Aspekte bei der Standort- bewertung gemeinsam zu berücksichtigen. This raises the ques- tion, which production processes promise both sufficient pro- duction volumes and acceptable production costs. The produc- tion of solar thermochemical fuels has the advantage of only needing water, renewable CO2 (for instance, through direct air capture), and direct sunlight as a source of renewable energy. It is thus obvious that locations with high solar irradiation are par- ticularly suited. However, a detailed techno-economic analysis (TEA) for various locations was missing so far. The particularity of the study presented here [1] is the combination of physioge- ographic (here, mainly direct normal irradiation (DNI)) and mac- roeconomic (here, mainly financing costs in terms of weighted average cost of capital (WACC)) aspects within a single loca- tion-specific TEA. Generally speaking, all relevant world regions (e.g. the Mediter- ranean, the United States, the Andes region, Australia, and southern Africa) hold suitable locations for the production of solar thermochemical fuels with high solar irradiation. Yet, pro- duction sites with high irradiance can lose their attractiveness through high financing costs, as is currently the case for South Africa, Algeria, or Bolivia, for instance. Due to the strong rela- tionship between financing costs and fuel costs, locations with relatively low solar irradiance can become interesting if financ- ing costs are very low (for instance, in Israel or Spain). This shows the importance of taking into account both physiogeo- graphic and macroeconomic aspects when evaluating produc- tion locations.

From sewage sludge to sustainable aviation fuel via the HTL process T he process of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) enables the production of renewable fuels from biogenic resources. Suitable feedstock types comprise cultivated biomass, residual materials, or waste streams such as sewage sludge. In the latter case, the HTL technology can serve as a disposal process in addition to a sustainable and cost-effective fuel production pathway. The EU-funded project HyFlexFuel develops an HTL-based pro- cess chain for transportation fuel production. The collaborative project is co-ordinated by Bauhaus Luftfahrt and involves a total of ten European partners. Early in the project, researchers at Aarhus University succeeded in producing so-called biocrudes from various feedstock types [1]. Biocrude, a product compa- rable to crude oil, is not yet suitable as an aviation fuel. How ever, by applying a catalytic upgrading process, the physical and chemical properties of the biocrude can be adapted and improved. The undesirable oxygen and nitrogen contents of the biocrudes could be significantly reduced in a continuous hydro- treatment reactor developed at Aalborg University [2]. Analyses of the upgraded biocrudes carried out in collaboration with the EU project JETSCREEN [3] show that various fuel specifications are already met. In the HyFlexFuel project, further process opti- misations are aimed at meeting all the requirements for drop-in fuels in aviation. Sustainable HTL fuels thus have the potential to replace significant quantities of jet fuel in the future. Vom Klärschlamm zum nachhaltigen Luftfahrtkraftstoff durch den HTL-Prozess Durch den Prozess der hydrothermalen Verflüssigung (hydro- thermal liquefaction (HTL)) lassen sich erneuerbare Kraftstoffe aus biogenen Rohstoffen herstellen. Als Ausgangsstoffe eignen sich sowohl Anbaubiomasse als auch Reststoffe oder Abfall- ströme wie Klärschlamm. Im letzteren Fall kann der HTL-Prozess neben einer nachhaltigen und kostengünstigen Kraftstoffher- stellung zugleich als Entsorgungsprozess dienen. Im EU-geförderten Verbundvorhaben HyFlexFuel arbeiten zehn europäische Partner unter der Koordination des Bauhaus Luft- fahrt an der Entwicklung einer HTL-basierten Prozesskette zur Kraftstoffproduktion. Den Forschern an der Universität Aarhus ist bereits zu Beginn des Projektes gelungen, aus diversen Rohstoffen sogenannte Biocrudes herzustellen [1]. Das Bio- crude, eine mit Rohöl vergleichbare Substanz, ist noch nicht als Kraftstoff für die Luftfahrt geeignet. Durch einen Aufbereitungs- prozess lassen sich die Biocrude-Eigenschaften aber mithilfe von Katalysatoren gezielt anpassen und verbessern. In einem an der Universität Aalborg entwickelten kontinuierlichen Reaktor ließen sich die unerwünschten Sauerstoff- und Stickstoffanteile erheblich reduzieren [2]. Dies belegen ebenfalls Analysen in Zusammenarbeit mit dem EU-Projekt JETSCREEN [3]. Das aufbereitete Biocrude erfüllt bereits diverse bestehende Kraft- stoffspezifikationen. Im HyFlexFuel-Projekt wird mit weiteren Prozessoptimierungen daran geforscht, alle Anforderungen an Drop-in-Kraftstoffe für die Luftfahrt zu erfüllen. Hydrothermal liquefaction is an advanced biofuel pathway that is in particular suitable for the conversion of wet residue and waste streams. Sewage sludges are of particular interest for early commercial HTL projects, since their treatment crea- tes additional revenues. The EU project JETSCREEN analysed kerosene samples from the HyFlexFuel project to prepare the approval process of HTL fuels for civil aviation. Due to the complex reaction network, HTL fuels show a specific chemical composition depending on the feedstock. An initial approval of HTL fuels from sewage sludge could serve as a blueprint for the approval of further waste- and residue-based HTL kerosenes with distinct feedstock-specific composition. Unter den fortgeschrittenen Biomasse-Konversionsverfahren eignet sich die hydrothermale Verflüssigung in besonderer Weise für die Umsetzung feuchter Abfall- oder Reststoffe. Aufgrund des komplexen Reaktionsnetzwerkes weisen HTL-Kraftstoffe ab hängig vom eingesetzten Rohstoff eine spezifische chemische Zusammensetzung auf. Eine Zulas- sung könnte zunächst für Klärschlamm erfolgen und dann auf weitere HTL-Kraftstoffe mit anderer Zusammensetzung übertragen werden.

64 65 Modellierung der Kraftstofferzeugung durch hydro- thermale Verflüssigung Die Grundidee der Kraftstofferzeugung durch die hydrothermale Verflüssigung (HTL) wurde im vorangehenden Artikel beschrie- ben. Um ein besseres Verständnis für die Vorgänge während des Prozesses und die entstehenden Endprodukte zu erhalten, ist eine detaillierte Modellierung des Kraftstoffpfades erforder- lich. Diese liefert zusätzlich wichtige Ergebnisse, wie z. B. Massen- und Energiebilanzen des gesamten Prozesses, welche die Grundlage für eine systemanalytische Betrachtung mittels Lebenszyklus- und techno-ökonomischer Analyse bilden. Im HTL-Prozess lassen sich unterschiedliche Abfall- und Rest- stoffe oder Anbaubiomassen umsetzen. Aufgrund der großen Anzahl unterschiedlicher Moleküle in den jeweiligen Biomassen sowie der großen Anzahl an Reaktionen, die während der hydro- thermalen Verflüssigung ablaufen, liegt dem Prozess ein sehr komplexes Reaktionsnetzwerk zugrunde. In der Folge besteht auch das Hauptprodukt, Biocrude, aus einer Vielzahl unter- schiedlicher chemischer Verbindungen. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt hat eine Modellierung entwickelt, die das komplexe Reaktions- netzwerk detailliert beschreibt. Die unterschiedliche Zusammen- setzung der jeweiligen Biomassen wird durch 51 repräsentative Moleküle abgebildet. Diese werden mit mehr als 200 Reak- tionen zu Zwischenprodukten aus mehr als 200 Molekülen umgesetzt. Modelling of fuel production via hydrothermal liquefaction T he basic idea of fuel production via hydrothermal liquefac- tion (HTL) is described in the previous article. In order to gain a better understanding of the chemical processes occur- ring during HTL, detailed modelling of the fuel production path- way is required. The process model also provides other impor- tant results, such as mass and energy balances of the process chain, which lay the basis for a system analysis study in the form of life-cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis. The HTL process can convert various waste and residual mate- rials. The individual biomasses contain a multitude of different molecules that give rise to a large number of reactions occurring during HTL conversion. As a consequence, the main product, a so-called biocrude, also consists of a complex mix- ture of molecules, and a detailed reaction network is needed to describe the chemistry of the process. Bauhaus Luftfahrt has developed a model, which describes the reaction network in depth. The composition of the different biomasses is represent- ed by 51 model compounds, which are processed to intermedi- ate products via more than 200 reactions. Besides the hydrothermal liquefaction step, several other pro- cess steps along the fuel conversion chain are modelled, includ- ing the hydrotreatment of the biocrude to a final mixture of hydrocarbon fuel products, an energetic use of the aqueous phase, and the recovery of nutrients in the form of a fertiliser product. The results of the modelling have been validated by comparison with various experimental data. Thereby, Bauhaus Luftfahrt has established a more detailed basis for a system analysis study of the HTL fuel production pathway than possible to date. Zur Bereitstellung einer ausreichenden Wassermenge für die Leistungssteigerung im Gasturbinenprozess muss die Brenn- stoffzelle einen wesentlichen Beitrag zum benötigten Leis- tungsbedarf des Flugzeuges liefern, der die Subsystem- versorgung deutlich übersteigt. In this context, the synergetic combination of different technolo- gies could pave the way for the introduction of hydrogen as a renewable energy source for future transport aircraft. In a con- cept for which Bauhaus Luftfahrt has submitted a patent appli- cation, the aircraft’s power requirements are provided by hydro- gen-powered gas turbines and fuel cells. The product water of the fuel cell is not released to the environment, but is con- densed, separated, pressurised, and evaporated again. Due to its incompressibility, relatively little work has to be done to increase the pressure in the liquid water, and the energy for evaporation can be recovered from the gas turbine exhaust gas stream. The water treated this way is fed into the gas tur- bine process and thereby increases the specific efficiency of the engine significantly. Additionally, nitrogen oxide emis- sions of the gas turbine can be reduced. In order to provide a sufficient quantity of water for performance enhancement in the gas turbine process, the fuel cell must provide a significant amount of the power demand of the air- craft, which exceeds the subsystem power supply by far. Since fuel cell power contribution may be available decentrally and electrically, the concept can also support distributed propulsion and the resulting efficiency gains and emissions savings. 68 69 I N O T A V A I N E G O R D Y H

Hydrogen as a zero in-flight CO2 emissions fuel has come to a great revival over the last few years. Still, its application to aircraft propulsion holds great challenges. Technical concepts need to target the full exploitation of its intrinsic advantages. As such, the utilisation of the product water of a hydrogen fuel cell in order to improve the performance of a gas turbine engine is a fascinating idea. A key feature in this is the water treatment process enabling incompressible pressurisation and convenient intermediate storage during flight. Imagine such a hydrogen- based propulsion system applied to the Propulsive Fuselage Concept just being proven as part of the CENTRELINE project. Optimisation of a Thermal Management System for (hybrid-) electric aircraft T he expected waste heat of future (hybrid-)electric aircraft is by an order of magnitude higher than that of conventionally powered aircraft. Efficient, reliable, and lightweight Thermal Management Systems (TMS) are therefore indispensable for the design of (hybrid-)electric aircraft. The TMS designed at Bauhaus Luftfahrt as part of the IVeA pro- ject for a partially turbo-electric short-range aircraft carrying 180 passengers was optimised so that the additional fuel required for a mission was minimal. Nevertheless, the mass of the TMS (mTMS), the additional aerodynamic drag (DTMS), and the power required have a discernibly negative effect on the aircraft’s fuel consumption (ΔFB). A classic TMS architecture, as outlined in the figure above right, dissipates the waste heat from the indi- vidual electrical components to the ambient air using a liquid cooling system with compact heat exchangers. The figure bottom right shows the result of this optimisation for different allowable temperatures of the electrical components (Tcp) and different proportions of electrical power to total power (SP). The mass and resistance of the TMS increase with SP , because a more electrified powertrain also generates more waste heat and thus all cooling system components must be larger. At higher Tcp, smaller TMS with less mass and resistance can be used. This is due to the overall higher temperature differ- ence to the environment, which favours heat transfer, so less heat exchanger area and lower air mass flow are needed, for example. The optimisation has reduced ΔFB to a minimum and shown that the cooling problem is not an insurmountable obstacle in the design of (hybrid-)electric aircraft. Dennoch wirken sich die Masse des TMS (mTMS), der aerodynamische Zusatzwiderstand (DTMS) sowie die benötigte Leistung erkenn- bar negativ auf den Kraftstoffverbrauch des Flugzeuges (ΔFB) aus. Eine klassische TMS-Architektur führt, wie in der Abbildung rechts oben skizziert, die Abwärme aus den einzelnen elek- trischen Komponenten mittels eines Flüssigkühlsystems mit kompakten Wärmetauschern an die Umgebungsluft ab. Die Abbildung rechts unten zeigt das Ergebnis dieser Optimie- rung für verschiedene zulässige Temperaturen der elektrischen Komponenten (Tcp) und unterschiedliche Anteile elektrischer Leistung an der Gesamtleistung (SP). Masse und Widerstand des TMS steigen mit SP , da bei höherer Elektrifizierung auch mehr Abwärme entsteht und so alle Komponenten des Kühlsys- tems größer sein müssen. Bei höheren Tcp können kleinere TMS mit weniger Masse und Widerstand verwendet werden. Dies liegt an der insgesamt höheren Temperaturdifferenz zur Umge- bung, welche die Wärmeübertragung begünstigt, sodass zum Beispiel weniger Wärmetauscherfläche und ein geringerer Luftmassenstrom benötigt werden. 76 77 Electrically assisted turboshaft engines for a regional aircraft W ithin the European Union-funded Horizon 2020 research project IMOTHEP, 33 international partners investigate the emissions reduction potential of hybrid-electric power trains for commercial aircraft following a holistic approach. Bauhaus Luftfahrt’s activities focus on the conceptual design and in-depth analysis of a regional aircraft platform featuring an electrically assisted twin-turboshaft propulsion architecture with two pro- pellers. In addition, Thermal Management Systems, which reject excessive electric waste heat over the wing-wetted sur- faces in the vicinity of the propeller slipstream, will be investi- gated in contrast to conventional heat management systems featuring ram-air heat exchangers. The electric assistance to the engines aims at increasing the efficiency of the engines and thus a block fuel reduction on aircraft level. It is a combination of a cycle-integrated parallel hybrid system realised through an electric drive of the engine compressor and a mechanically inte- grated parallel hybrid system, i.e. an electric assistance to the power shaft. Electric energy is sourced from an on-board bat- tery. The integrated aircraft design process follows a three- stage approach, wherein the applied methods and models are refined systematically, starting at a conceptual design level, continuing with a multidisciplinary design, and finalising the aircraft design in a refined assessment. Models for the electri- cally assisted turbo generator are developed in-house. Differing engine architectures and designs will be analysed, and aircraft level studies will be performed with a focus on mission hybridi- sation operation strategies. Die elektrische Unterstützung der Triebwerke zielt auf eine Erhöhung des Triebwerkwirkungsgrads und somit eine Reduktion des Treib- stoffverbrauchs ab. Dabei wird die aus einer bordeigenen Batte- rie gespeiste elektrische Energie einerseits durch einen elek- trisch angetriebenen Verdichter direkt in den Kreisprozess eingebracht und andererseits die Abtriebswelle durch einen Elektromotor mechanisch unterstützt. Alle wesentlichen Herausforderungen, die mit der speziellen Antriebsintegration in einem turboelektrischen PFC-Flugzeug verbunden sind, wurden erfolgreich adressiert. Durch umfangreiche numerische Simulationen sowie experi- mentelle Untersuchungen im Windkanal und am Fan-Prüfstand wurde ein grundlegendes aerodynamisches Verständnis zur Rumpfgrenzschichteinsaugung durch den PFC-Antrieb aufge- baut. Es wurden optimierte aerodynamische Vorentwürfe für den PFC-Fan und den hinteren Rumpfabschnitt erarbeitet und konzeptionelle Lösungen für die aerostrukturelle Integration des Rumpfantriebes sowie den turboelektrischen Antriebsstrang entwickelt. Alle detaillierten Entwurfs- und Analyseergebnisse flossen in die multidisziplinäre Vorauslegung einer PFC- Flugzeugfamilie ein, und die PFC-Technologie wurde gegen ein ebenso fortschrittliches, aber konventionelles Flugzeug bewer- tet. Für eine Transportaufgabe von 340 Passagieren und 6500 nmi Reichweite wurde ein idealisiertes CO2-Einsparpo- tenzial von 10,7 % ermittelt. Unter Berücksichtigung der turbo- elektrischen Leistungsübertragung sparte das PFC-Flugzeug im direkten Vergleich noch 4,7 % CO2 ein (36 % gegenüber dem Jahr 2000). Die PFC-Konfiguration zeigte sich als besonders gut mit anderen hochentwickelten Technologien wie supraleitender Elektrik, hocheffizienten Tragflächen und Wasserstoff als Kraft- stoff kombinierbar. Neben dem erfolgreich demonstrierten Technologiereifegrad (TRL) 3 wurde eine Roadmap für die wei- tere Entwicklung der PFC-Technologie in Richtung TRL 6 bis 2030 erstellt. EU H2020 Project “ConcEpt validatioN sTudy foR fusElage wake-filLIng propulsioN intEgration” This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 723242. https://www.centreline.eu/ Proof of concept for fuselage Boundary Layer Ingesting propulsion T ogether with its partners in the EU H2020 project CENTRELINE, Bauhaus Luftfahrt has completed the con- ceptual proof and initial experimental validation for the so-called Propulsive Fuselage Concept (PFC). All main challenges asso- ciated with fuselage wake-filling propulsion integration in a tur- bo-electric PFC aircraft were successfully tackled. A thorough understanding of the aerodynamic effects of 360° fuselage Boundary Layer Ingestion (BLI) was developed through exten- sive aero-numerical simulations as well as low-speed wind tun- nel and fan rig testing. Optimised aerodynamic pre-designs were produced for the BLI fuselage fan and the aft-fuselage section. Conceptual solutions for the aero-structural integration of the BLI propulsive device and the turbo-electric powertrain were elaborated. All detailed design and analysis results were incorporated in a multidisciplinary aircraft family pre-design, and the PFC technology was rigorously benchmarked against a sim- ilarly advanced but conventional aircraft. Evaluating a mid- to long-range air transport task featuring 340 passengers and 6500 nmi design range in the year 2035, an idealised CO2 reduc- tion potential of 10.7 % was found. With the turbo-electric trans- mission included, the PFC aircraft showed -4.7 % CO2 against the advanced reference, or -36 % relative to a year 2000 base- line. The PFC configuration revealed excellent compatibility with other highly advanced technologies, especially high-tempera- ture superconducting electrics, ultra-efficient wing and hydro- gen fuel technology. With Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3 successfully demonstrated, a roadmap for the future develop- ment of the PFC aircraft technology towards TRL 6 by 2030 was devised.

Integrierte Vorauslegung von hybrid-elektrischen Antriebssystemen Die Elektrifizierung von Flugzeugantriebssträngen stellt einen zentralen Baustein für eine emissionsärmere Luftfahrt dar und erfordert hierfür geeignete Vorauslegungswerkzeuge. Insbe- sondere für hybrid-elektrische Flugzeuge höherer Leistungs- klassen existiert bisher aber kein leicht zugängliches Vorausle- gungsprogramm, welches sowohl den konventionellen als auch den elektrischen Teil des Antriebssystems detailliert abbildet. Das Projekt „Integrierte Vorauslegung elektrohybrider Antriebs- systeme“ (IVeA) hat sich im Rahmen des zivilen Luftfahrtfor- schungsprogrammes dieser Problemstellung angenommen. Konkret wurde die kommerzielle Software GasTurb™ zur Vor- auslegung von Turbomaschinen um physikalisch-mathematische Modelle für elektrische Antriebskomponenten erweitert. Im Anschluss wurde die neue GasTurb™-Version genutzt, um den partial-turboelektrischen Antriebsstrang eines Kurzstreckenflug- zeuges für 180 Passagiere auszulegen. Der Vortrieb dieses Flugzeuges wird durch moderne Turboproptriebwerke sowie über turboelektrisch angetriebene Flügelspitzenpropeller, die den Widerstand während des Flugs verringern, gewährleistet. Eine Besonderheit des Antriebssystems stellt die Integration eines zur Kühlung der elektrischen Komponenten verwandten Thermalmanagementsystems (TMS) dar (siehe Seite 74 f.). Der Entwurf und die Optimierung dieses TMS erfolgte mithilfe von Flugzeugkraftstoff-Verbrauchssensitivitäten auf angenommene Änderungen der Masse und des aerodynamischen Widerstan- des des TMS. Im Verlauf des Projektes wurden drei verschie- dene Ausprägungen des Antriebssystems untersucht. Die Schlüsselvariable war hier der Anteil der Wellenleistung der Flügelspitzenpropeller an der Gesamtwellenleistung. Für den maximalen Anteil von 30 % konnten die höchsten relativen Ein- sparungen im Kraftstoffverbrauch zum konventionellen Refe- renzflugzeug erzielt werden. Integrated preliminary design of hybrid-electric propulsion systems T he electrification of aircraft powertrains represents a cen- tral building block for lower-emission aviation and requires suitable prediction tools for this purpose. However, especially for hybrid-electric aircraft of higher power classes, there is no easily accessible preliminary design programme available so far, which represents the conventional as well as the electric part of the propulsion system in detail. The German project “Integrierte Vorauslegung elektrohybrider Antriebssysteme” (IVeA) addressed this problem as part of the Federal Aviation Research Programme. Specifically, the commercial software GasTurb™ for prelimi- nary turbomachinery design was extended to include phys- ical-mathematical models for electric propulsion components. Subsequently, the new GasTurb™ version was used to design the partial turbo-electric powertrain of a short-range aircraft for 180 passengers. The propulsion of this aircraft is provided by modern turboprop engines as well as by turbo-electrically driven wingtip propellers that reduce drag during flight. A special fea- ture of the propulsion system is the integration of a Thermal Management System (TMS) used to cool the electrical compo- nents (see page 74 f.). The design and optimisation of this TMS was done using aircraft fuel burn sensitivities to assumed changes in the mass and drag of the TMS. In the course of the project, three different versions of the propulsion system were investigated. Here, the key variable was the ratio of the shaft power of the wingtip propellers to the total shaft power. While the integration of (hybrid-)electric propulsion compo- nents as isolated units becomes part of the standard tool set for innovative aircraft design, the assessment of synergistic potentials remains a key research activity. Promising examples of aerodynamic concepts being analysed by Bauhaus Luftfahrt are the ingestion of the boundary layer of large hydrogen- storing fuselages and the modification of the lift distributions, e.g. by distributed propulsion. Furthermore, the management of thermal loads with innovative cooling concepts has proven to be a key enabler for the application of propulsion concepts with significant electric loads. Während die Integration von (hybrid-)elektrischen An- triebskomponenten als isolierte Einheiten zu einem Stan- dardwerkzeug für innovative Flugzeugentwürfe wird, bleibt die Bewertung von Synergiepotenzialen eine zent- rale Forschungsaktivität. Vielversprechende Beispiele für aerodynamische Konzepte, die am Bauhaus Luftfahrt analysiert werden, sind die Grenzschichteinsaugung von Rümpfen mit Wasserstoffspeichern und die Modifikation der Auftriebsverteilungen, z. B. durch verteilte Antriebe. Darüber hinaus hat sich das Thermalmanagement mit innovativen Kühlungskonzepten als wichtige Vorausset- zung für Antriebskonzepte mit signifikanten elektrischen Lasten erwiesen.

Im Geschäftsjahr 2020 sind die Erträge des Bauhaus Luftfahrt, trotz der COVID-19-Effekte in der Luftfahrt, nur um -4,1 % auf 5,0 Mio. EUR gesunken. Die Zuwendungen des Freistaates Bayern sind weiterhin konstant. Die Mitgliedsbeiträge haben sich um +150,0 TEUR erhöht, da das Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) als neues Mitglied gewonnen wer- den konnte. Die öffentlichen Drittmitteleinnahmen haben sich im Jahr 2020 um -284,6 TEUR (-24,7 %) auf 1,4 Mio. EUR verringert. Diese Einnahmen sind auf Arbeiten an 14 Forschungsprojekten zurückzuführen, die von der Europäischen Union, dem Bund oder dem Freistaat Bayern gefördert werden. Der Rückgang ist im Wesentlichen auf den Abschluss von zwei größeren EU- Projekten in 2019 und 2020 zurückzuführen. Bei den Projekten mit den Industriepartnern sind die Umsätze um -73,4 TEUR (-7,6 %) auf 1,2 Mio. EUR zurückgegangen, wel- che signifikante COVID-19-Reduktionen beinhalten, die jedoch größtenteils durch neue Projekte kompensiert werden konnten. Für das Jahr 2021 erwartet das Bauhaus Luftfahrt wesentliche Veränderungen auf der Ertragsseite. Aufgrund der schwierigen und ungewissen finanziellen Lage bei den Industriepartnern, bedingt durch die COVID-19-Pandemie, werden die Umfänge der industriefinanzierten Forschungsprojekte zurückgehen. Es wird jedoch eine Erhöhung der Zuwendungen des Freistaates Bayern erwartet, die den Rückgang bei den Projektmitteln größtenteils kompensieren wird. 86 87 Finances Finanzen In the fiscal year 2020, despite the COVID-19 effects in avia- tion, the earnings of Bauhaus Luftfahrt decreased only by -4.1 % to 5.0 million EUR. The project revenues with our industrial partners decreased by -73.4 kEUR (-7.6 %) to 1.2 million EUR, which contained signifi- cant COVID-19-related cuts, but which were largely compensat- ed for by new projects. For the year 2021, Bauhaus Luftfahrt expects significant chang- es in earnings. Due to the difficult and uncertain financial situa- tion of the industrial partners caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, industrial research project volumes will be reduced. Der Personalbestand ist im Jahr 2020 gegenüber dem Vorjahr etwas gesunken. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt beschäftigte zum Jahresende 47 Mit- arbeiter*innen, davon 34 Wissenschaftler*innen. 16 der wis- senschaftlichen Mitarbeiter*innen weisen eine abgeschlossene Promotion auf. Der Anteil der Wissenschaftlerinnen am Bauhaus Luftfahrt betrug im Jahr 2020 29,4 %, der Frauenanteil am Bauhaus Luftfahrt insgesamt 40,0 %. Die Anzahl der Student*innen ist im Jahr 2020 im Verhältnis zum Vorjahr relativ konstant geblieben. Trotz der Pandemieaus- wirkungen waren 38 Student*innen und ein Stipendiat aus ins- gesamt 17 Nationen als wissenschaftliche Hilfskräfte, Prak- tikant*innen oder zur Erstellung ihrer Studienarbeiten am Bauhaus Luftfahrt tätig. Insgesamt waren in 2020 91 Personen aus 20 Nationen am Bauhaus Luftfahrt beschäftigt. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt unternimmt aufgrund der derzeitigen Pandemieentwicklung erhebliche Anstrengungen, hochqualifi- zierte Absolvent*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen aus unter- schiedlichen Fachrichtungen zu gewinnen, um ein hohes Niveau an wissenschaftlicher Forschungstätigkeit leisten zu können. Personnel Personal T he number of employees decreased slightly in 2020 com- pared to the previous year. At the end of the year, Bauhaus Luftfahrt had 47 employees, 34 of whom were scientists. 16 of the scientific employees have completed their doctorates. The share of female scientists at Bauhaus Luftfahrt in 2020 was 29.4 %, and the share of women at Bauhaus Luftfahrt overall was 40.0 %. The number of students has remained relatively constant in 2020 compared to the previous year. Despite the pandemic impact, 38 students and one scholarship holder from 17 nations were employed at Bauhaus Luftfahrt as research assistants, interns, or to realise their student research projects. In total, 91 people from 20 nations were employed at Bauhaus Luftfahrt in 2020. Despite the current pandemic development, Bauhaus Luftfahrt is taking significant efforts to further attract highly qualified graduates and researchers from different disciplines in order to be able to provide a high level of scientific research activity.
