Ladies and Gentlemen T he ongoing pandemic situation is still putting a high pres- sure on the aviation system and leading to farreaching changes in passengers’ mobility behaviour as well as the struc- tures of this important mobility system. At the same time, important decisions need to be taken towards sustainable, climate-neutral aviation. The widespread introduction of sustain- able energy carriers is of special interest in this regard. Advanced technologies for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) are available today. For one radical new path, the project team around Bau- haus Luftfahrt has just received the 22nd Energy Globe World Award. But all sustainable fuel options feature two specific characteristics: 1. The production requires substantial amounts of renewable energy, and 2. The costs will increase significantly compared to conventional kerosene. Further improvement of the efficiency of the aircraft and its propulsion system remains essential for the sustainable devel- opment of aviation. Bauhaus Luftfahrt with its interdisciplinary team provides very valuable upfront research in its role as an aviation think tank. With a high amount of creativity in combina- tion with a scientific approach, promising development path- ways are identified, assessed and recommendations are provid- ed for all aviation stakeholders. Especially with new technologies, which require massive chang- es in the whole ecosystem, as for example with the possible use of hydrogen on the aircraft, a system-wide perspective is necessary in order to provide decision-makers with the right basis for their strategic decisions. The Yearbook 2021 provides you, dear reader, with important insights, findings, and possible food for thought on such interac- tions as well as further development options for aviation. Yours Lars Wagner Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren Die anhaltende Pandemie hat den globalen Luftverkehr weiter- hin fest im Griff und führt zu weitreichenden Veränderungen sowohl im Mobilitätsverhalten als auch in den Strukturen dieses wichtigen Mobilitätssystems. Gleichzeitig gilt es, diese Verände- rungen für wichtige Weichenstellungen hin zu einem klimaneu- tralen Luftverkehr zu nutzen. Der großflächigen Einführung nachhaltiger Energieträger kommt hier eine zentrale Bedeutung zu. Fortschrittliche Ansätze für nachhaltige Luftfahrtkraftstoffe (Sustainable Aviation Fuels – SAF) sind heute technologisch verfügbar. Für einen radikal neuen Pfad konnte das Projektteam rund um das Bauhaus Luftfahrt gerade den 22. Energy Globe World Award gewinnen. Allen erfolgversprechenden SAF- Optionen sind jedoch zwei grundlegende Eigenschaften gemein: 1. Die Erzeugung benötigt erhebliche Mengen erneuerbarer Energie und 2. Die Kosten werden sich gegenüber konventio- nellem Kerosin erheblich erhöhen. Die weitere Steigerung der Effizienz der Flugzeuge und ihrer Antriebssysteme bleibt also elementar für die nachhaltige Ent- wicklung der Luftfahrt. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt mit seinem interdisziplinären Team leistet hier wertvolle Vorarbeit im Sinne eines Thinktanks. Mit viel Kreativität in Verbindung mit wissen- schaftlicher Herangehensweise werden Entwicklungspfade identifiziert, bewertet und Handlungsempfehlungen abgeleitet. Gerade bei neuen Technologien, die grundlegende Anpassun- gen im gesamten Ökosystem des Luftverkehrs bedeuten, wie z. B. bei der direkten Nutzung von Wasserstoff im Luftfahrzeug, ist diese systemübergreifende Betrachtung wichtig, um Entscheidungsträger*innen die notwendigen Grundlagen für ihre Entscheidungen bereitzustellen. Das Jahrbuch 2021 liefert Ihnen, liebe Leserin, lieber Leser, zu diesen Wechselwirkungen, aber auch vielen weiteren, spannen- den Entwicklungsoptionen wichtige Erkenntnisse und Denkan- stöße. The current political and societal environment is characterised by dras- tic changes, which might lead to far-reaching consequences for the private and commercial use of the air transport system. Futurology makes use of a multitude of approaches and theories to handle development pathways, which are characterised by a high amount of uncertainty, in order to derive options for action. With the implementation of the Trend Monitor at Bauhaus Luft- fahrt, methods and tools have been established to connect societal development with technological options in order to derive and evaluate different development strategies for avia- tion. In close connection to the well-established Technology Radar, where the whole researcher team of Bauhaus Luftfahrt contin- uously screens basic research for new findings and technologi- cal options, it allows to identify new development options along the push-and-pull principle early on. Especially if boundary con- ditions and demands, e.g. in mobility behaviour, change, new technological approaches may play a decisive role. A trend which we are all well aware of in our daily lives, driven by the easier access to data and information. In mobility research, a multitude of facets are interacting, with a possible evolution towards more radical changes. Bauhaus Luftfahrt has established tools and methods in recent years, which allow the team to test even very radical ideas and approaches for their application potentials and plausibility. Only this will allow early communication of recommendations and strategic development options. I wish you, dear reader, exciting insights into the complexity and options for a sustainable aviation of tomorrow. Das aktuelle politische, aber auch gesellschaftliche Umfeld ist gekennzeich- net durch einschneidende Veränderungen, die auch weitrei- chende Konsequenzen auf die private und berufliche Nutzung des Luftverkehrssystems haben können. Die Zukunftsforschung bedient sich hier verschiedener Ansätze, diese mit Unsicherheit belegten Entwicklungspfade zu verstehen und daraus mögliche Handlungsoptionen abzuleiten. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt hat sich mit dem neu etablierten Trendmonitor methodisch so aufge- stellt, dass wir die Veränderungen im Umfeld mit den sich ergebenden technologischen Optionen verknüpfen und somit mögliche Entwicklungspfade für die Luftfahrt ableiten und bewerten können. In Verbindung mit dem etablierten Technologieradar, in dem das gesamte Team der Forscher*innen kontinuierlich Entwicklungen in den Grundlagenwissenschaften beobachtet und in einer Erstbewertung neue Ansätze auf ihr Anwendungspotenzial in der Luftfahrt untersucht, können so neue Entwicklungsoptionen nach dem Push-and-Pull-Prinzip frühzeitig identifiziert werden. Denn wenn sich Randbedingungen und auch Bedarfe, z. B. im Mobilitätsverhalten, ändern, können auf einmal neue technolo- gische Ansätze eine entscheidende Rolle spielen. Ein Trend, den wir alle aus unserem alltäglichen Leben, aus dem erleichterten Zugang zu Daten und Informationen, bestens kennen. In der Mobilitätsforschung greift hier jedoch eine Vielzahl von Facetten ineinander, die zu radikaleren Änderungen führen können. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt hat sich über die Jahre Methoden und Tools erarbeitet, die es dem Team erlauben, auch radikale Gedanken und Ansätze einer grundlegenden Plausibilitäts- und Potenzialabschätzung unterziehen zu können. Nur damit ist es möglich, frühzeitig Empfehlungen und Handlungsoptionen klar benennen zu können. The compe- tence domain “Sustainable Development & Policies” explores this area of tension by evalu- ating the climate impact of different sustainable solutions. Further, policy analyses, supported by econometric studies, give recommendations for a reasonable regulative framework. Finally, scenario simulations reveal holistic and cost- efficient pathways towards climate neutrality. Ein nachhaltiges Luftfahrtsystem vereint Kli- maneutralität, umfassenden Zugang zu globaler Mobilität und industrielle Wertschöpfung. Der Kompetenzbereich „Sustainable Development & Policies“ erforscht dieses Spannungsfeld durch die Bewertung der Klimawirksamkeit verschiedener nachhaltiger Lösungen. Zudem liefern Policy-Analysen, unterstützt durch öko- nometrische Studien, Empfehlungen für einen sinnvollen regulativen Rahmen. Mit Szenario- simulationen werden schließlich ganzheitliche und kosteneffiziente Pfade in Richtung Kli- maneutralität aufgezeigt. Energy & Fuels The competence domain “Energy & Fuels” assesses various energy technologies and fuel pathways with respect to their potential contri- bution to achieving the climate targets of the aviation industry. The individual supply and logi- stics chains are analysed from the production of the primary energy carrier to the use phase in the aircraft. Important competences include the quantification of production potentials, techno- economic and life-cycle assessment, as well as the analysis of future energy options for avia- tion. Der Kompetenzbereich „Energy & Fuels“ bewertet verschiedene Energietechnologien und Kraftstoffpfade im Hinblick auf deren mögli- chen Beitrag zum Erreichen der Klimaziele im Luftverkehr. Dazu werden die jeweiligen Bereit- stellungsketten von der primären Energieerzeu- gung bis zu deren Nutzung im Fluggerät unter- sucht. Wichtige Kompetenzen sind die Quan- tifizierung der jeweiligen Produktionspotenziale, die Kosten- und Lebenszyklusanalyse sowie die Technologieanalyse zukünftiger Energieoptio- nen für den Luftverkehr. Network, Fleet, & Operations This competence domain applies methods of operations research such as modelling, simula- tion, and optimisation of intermodal travel chains, airline networks, as well as aircraft utilisation and fleet planning. The aim is to better anticipate new air vehicle market segments interacting with ground transportation modes, possible operational efficiency improvements, as well as future air vehicle design and techno- logy requirements. Dieser Kompetenzbereich umfasst Methoden des Operations Research wie Modellierung, Simulation und Optimierung von intermodalen Reiseketten, Airline-Netzwerken sowie Flug- zeugeinsatz- und Flottenplanung. Damit wird das Ziel verfolgt, zukünftige Einsatzbereiche von Fluggeräten im Zusammenspiel mit dem Bodentransport, mögliche Effizienzpotenziale im Betrieb als auch zukünftige Entwurfs- und Technologieanforderungen von Fluggeräten besser antizipieren zu können.

Passenger & Market Development To create user-centric mobility and to identify changing market structures, it is of utmost importance to gain a detailed insight into long- term supply and demand developments for the transport sector in general and aviation in parti- cular. This competence domain facilitates the analysis of passenger behaviour, new travel profiles, market structures, and novel business opportunities by applying scenario studies, strategy frameworks, meta-analyses, surveys, or data analytics. Airframe & Systems Design The potential assessment of radical technolo- gies with the complex interactions inherent in integrated aircraft design requires versatile and agile skills, which are provided by the “Airframe & Systems Design” competence domain. In order to accommodate fast analyses providing results at overall aircraft level, Bauhaus Luftfahrt employs methods with various solution-oriented levels of detail. Integrated in flexible frame- works, these methods enable multidisciplinary optimisation and analysis. Propulsion System Design Ultra-efficient propulsion systems are key dri- vers for sustainable aviation. This domain con- centrates the competences around advanced motive power technologies, thermodynamics, performance calculation, and multidisciplinary conceptual design integration. The technical knowledge covered includes advanced gas tur- bine and revolutionary heat engines, hybrid- electric power systems and electrochemical key components, hydrogen, and Boundary Layer Ingesting propulsion integration. Um nutzerzentrierte Mobilität zu ermöglichen und veränderte Marktstrukturen zu erkennen, ist ein detaillierter Einblick in die langfristigen Angebots- und Nachfrageentwicklungen für den Verkehrssektor im Allgemeinen und den Luftverkehr im Besonderen notwendig. Dieser Kompetenzbereich fokussiert sich auf die Analyse des Passagierverhaltens, neuer Reiseprofile, Marktstrukturen und neuartiger Geschäftsmöglichkeiten unter Anwendung von Szenariostudien, Strategieframeworks, Umfra- gen, Meta- oder Datenanalysen. The Technology Radar of Bauhaus Luftfahrt acts as an antenna for step-change technological advance- ments and radically new developments in the domains of energy, materials, photonics, sensors, and information. In order to quantitatively analyse and assess future technol- ogies, a specially developed methodology based on scientific principles is used. As guidance to the future development of sound overall concepts, performance potentials are determined in the aeronautical context at various levels of complexity. Die Früherkennung von disruptiven Technologien und deren physikalischer Leitplanken ist der Schlüssel zu langfristigen, nachhaltigen Innovationen in der Luftfahrt. Das Technologieradar des Bauhaus Luftfahrt fungiert als Antenne für Technologiesprünge und radikal neue Entwicklungen in den Domänen Energie, Materialien, Photonik, Sensorik und Information. Um Zukunftstechnologien quantitativ zu analysieren und zu bewerten, wird eine eigens entwickelte, auf naturwissenschaftliche Prinzipien gestützte Methodik angewandt. Als Leitlinie für die zukünftige Entwicklung stimmiger Gesamtkonzepte werden Leistungspotenziale im Luftfahrtkontext auf unterschiedli- chen Komplexitätsebenen untersucht.

Potenziale zur Lebenszeiterhöhung von Brennstoffzellen in der Luftfahrt Der Umstieg auf (hybrid-)elektrische Konzepte erfordert die Optimierung elektrochemischer Speicher und Wandler, um den Ansprüchen an ihre Performanz und Zuverlässigkeit im heraus- fordernden Einsatz in Luftfahrtanwendungen gerecht zu wer- den. Um Leistungsabfall oder Ausfällen vorzubeugen, können Methoden aus dem Bereich Prognostics and Health Manage- ment (PHM) einen wertvollen Beitrag leisten. Die Forschung zu diesbezüglichen Technologien für Brennstoff- zellen ist in einem vergleichsweise frühen Stadium – nicht zuletzt, weil die ablaufenden Degradationsprozesse eine erheb- liche Komplexität aufweisen. Ein kontinuierlich verbessertes Verständnis der zugrunde liegenden Mechanismen sowie Ent- wicklungen im Bereich der künstlichen Intelligenz führen aller- dings zu erheblichen Fortschritten, welche durch das Bauhaus- Luftfahrt-Technologieradar detektiert werden konnten. Um die Potenziale dieser Technologien für Luftfahrtanwendun- gen abschätzen zu können, wurden die Auswirkungen relevanter Alterungsprozesse auf die Restlebensdauer der Zelle unter- sucht. Diese treten meist bei hohen Lasten oder schnellen Lastwechseln auf, welche in luftfahrtspezifischen Lastprofilen hauptsächlich bei Start und Landung zu beobachten sind. Einer beschleunigten Alterung durch Spitzenlasten kann eine Erhö- hung der Zellenanzahl entgegenwirken. Weiter kann eine Lebenszeitverlängerung etwa durch adaptive Hybridisierung oder eine last- und druckabhängige Gaszufuhr erzielt werden. A continuously improved understanding of the fundamental mechanisms as well as developments in the field of artificial intelligence, however, are leading to significant progress, which has been detected by the Bauhaus Luftfahrt Technology Radar. In order to roughly assess the potentials of PHM technologies for aviation applications, the effects of certain ageing processes on the remaining useful life of fuel cells were investigated. These effects are most pronounced at high load conditions or rapid load changes, which typically occur during take-off and landing in aviation-specific load profiles. A higher cell number can counteract accelerated ageing caused by peak loads. Fur- thermore, the lifetime can be increased by adaptive hybridisa- tion or by implementing a load- and pressure-dependent gas inflow. Depending on the application scenario, improvement potentials of up to several 100 % have been demonstrated. To maximise benefits, performance and cost efficiency are essential. The conver- gence of sensing and machine learning offers new degrees of freedom for optimisation through innovative monitoring and control strategies. For effective exploitation, it is imperative to research correlations of, for example, aviation-typical operating conditions and ageing or design and control para- meters. Hence, gaining a solid database from dedicated stress and performance tests is essential to exploit potentials for optimised design, durability, and life-cycle costs. Dieser ist sowohl komponenten- als auch nut- zungsabhängig und steigt mit dem Flugzeugalter an. Da ein dediziertes SHM-System Gewicht und Leistungsbedarf des Flugzeuges erhöht, stellt sich zum einen die Frage, für welche spezifischen Komponenten sich eine Überwachung lohnen könnte, und zum anderen, ob eine Nachrüstung im späteren Leben – im Vergleich zur reinen Werksinstrumentierung – höhere Kosteneinsparungen erlaubt. Um dies zu bewerten, wurde der Einfluss des SHM-Ab- deckungsgrads und -Zeitpunktes am Beispiel des A320 im Rahmen einer Kapitalwertbetrachtung untersucht. Hierfür wurde ein komponentenaufgelöstes Sensornetzwerkmodell entwickelt, um zusätzliche Investitions- und Treibstoffkosten dem eingesparten Inspektionsaufwand für unterschiedliche Flugzeugnutzung gegenüberzustellen. Auf diese Weise konnten optimierte SHM-Konfigurationen abgeleitet werden, die generell auf Flugzeugebene ein Einspar- potenzial bieten. Dieses ist – bei später im Flugzeugleben stattfindender Nachrüstung – auf Flottenebene um etwa 20 % höher als bei einer reinen Werksinstrumentierung, da der Ins- pektionsaufwand und damit der Vorteil des Sensorsystems mit dem Flugzeugalter zunehmen. Optimisation of structural health monitoring for airliners Structural health monitoring (SHM) using sensor networks makes it possible to reduce the manual inspection costs of aircraft. These costs depend both on components and on usage, and increase with aircraft age. As dedicated SHM systems increase aircraft weight and electric power demand, it is of inter- est to assess firstly, for which specific components monitoring might be worthwhile, and secondly, whether retrofitting later in life allows for higher savings as compared with pure factory instrumentation. In order to address these questions, the influence of SHM cov- erage ratio and time of instrumentation was investigated in the framework of net present value (NPV) theory, using the A320 as an example. To this end, a sensor network model was devel- oped based on individual structural components to contrast added investment and fuel costs with saved inspection effort for different aircraft usage. In this way, optimised SHM configurations were derived, which generally offer savings potential at aircraft level. Compared to pure factory instrumentation, a retrofit event later in life pro- vides a 20 % advantage, as inspection effort and thus the bene- fit of the sensor system increase with aircraft age. Moreover, for aircraft operating on short-haul routes, SHM exhibits the largest savings potential. At fleet level, therefore, especially for airlines with a large share of short-haul flights, additional benefits arise if the retrofitting time and number of monitored positions are optimised for individual aircraft in accordance with their average usage.

26 27 I R O T N O M D N E R T Wie verändert COVID-19 die Luftfahrt? Drei Szenarien einer Neuausrichtung COVID-19 ist die erste globale Pandemie für die Luftfahrt. Die mittelfristigen Auswirkungen auf die gesamte Branche sind aktuell durch große Unsicherheit geprägt. Im Rahmen einer Szenariostudie [1] zeigen die Technische Universität München, Airbus, der Flughafen München und das Bauhaus Luftfahrt drei mögliche Zukunftsbilder über alternative Entwicklungen der COVID-19-Pandemie und des Luftfahrtsystems bis 2030 auf. Die Szenarien gehen davon aus, dass das Passagieraufkommen von 2019 frühestens wieder im Jahr 2023 und spätestens 2026 erreicht wird. Die eingeführten Maßnahmen zur Reisehygiene werden in allen drei Szenarien bis mindestens 2024 Bestand haben, wobei z. B. kontaktloses Reisen ein neuer Standard werden könnte. Vereinzelte Virusausbrüche könnte es bis 2030 je nach Szenario auf regionaler Ebene geben. Die bereits vor der Krise zu beobachtende Entwicklung zur Digitalisierung wird in allen drei Szenarien anhalten und könnte sogar durch die Pande- mie verstärkt werden. Daraus resultieren neue Geschäftsfelder, die zu einer stärkeren Nutzung von Passagierdaten führen oder den Einstieg von Tech-Firmen in die Luftfahrt ermöglichen könnten. Three scenarios of a restart COVID-19 is the first global pandemic for aviation. The medi- um-term effects on the entire industry are currently charac- terised by high uncertainty. Within a scenario study [1], the Technical University of Munich, Airbus, Munich Airport, and Bauhaus Luftfahrt present three possible future scenarios on alternative developments of the COVID-19 pandemic and the aviation system up to 2030. The scenarios assume that the passenger volume of 2019 will be reached in 2023 at the earliest and in 2026 at the latest. The travel-hygiene-related measures that have been put in place will continue until at least 2024 in all three scenarios, although con- tactless travel could become a new standard. Depending on the scenario, isolated virus outbreaks could occur at regional levels until 2030. The trend towards digitalisation, which was already evident before the crisis, will continue in all three scenarios and could be reinforced by the pandemic. This might result in new business opportunities for greater usage of passengers’ data or enable tech companies to enter the aviation sector. In addition to pandemic variables, environmental-related factors and passengers’ behaviour are considered as well. Thus, a holis- tic picture of the aviation system is provided within the scenar- ios. This approach is essential for aviation stake- holders to master this transformation, meet future customer needs, and position themselves more sustainably and competitively. And finally, how do changing ticket prices and an increasing environmental awareness among passengers affect the future demand trends in air travel? In light of such complex dynamics, scenario simulations are among the preferred methods to better understand the underlying mechanisms and to clearly show implications of different scenario outcomes. Finally, in light of rising CO2 costs, emission reductions become ever more important to dampen an increase in ticket prices. Die Zukunft einer verbesserten Zusammenarbeit zwischen Luft und Schiene gestalten Im Rahmen des Zieles des Europäischen Green Deal, ver- kehrsbedingte Treibhausgasemissionen bis 2050 um 90 % zu reduzieren [1], wird aktuell eine mögliche Verlagerung von Kurzstreckenflügen auf die Schiene diskutiert. Hier zu berück- sichtigende Aspekte sind vielfältig und betreffen unter anderem Investitionen und politische Anreize. Hierbei sollten die externen Kosten beider Verkehrsträger, mögliche Lärmauswirkungen sowie die Integration neuer technologischer Optionen und dar- aus resultierende Effizienzsteigerungen berücksichtigt werden. Zudem ist es wichtig, komplementäre Aspekte multimodaler Reiseketten zu optimieren, wie kürzere Anreisezeiten zu Flughä- fen, Zubringeroptionen für Fluggesellschaften zu Drehkreuzen oder freie Flughafenkapazitäten für umsatzstarke Langstrecken- verbindungen. Das Modus-Projekt analysiert einige dieser Aspekte unter Berücksichtigung eines multimodalen, integrierten europäi- schen Verkehrssystems. Die Analysen umfassen die Identifika- tion und Bewertung von Faktoren, die die Reiseentscheidungen von Passagier*innen beeinflussen. Hier zeigt sich, dass Preis, Reisezeiten und Servicequalität einen entscheidenden Einfluss auf die Verkehrsmittelwahl haben. Im Rahmen von vier Szena- rien, die von einer signifikanten Verlagerung des Luftverkehrs auf die Schiene bis hin zu einem dezentraleren Luftverkehrsnetz reichen, werden die Auswirkungen auf Reisezeiten oder Markt- anteile untersucht. In einem der Szenarien wird angenommen, dass der Passagierverkehr unter 500 km innerhalb der EU bis 2030 CO2-neutral sein soll [2]. Um die möglichen zukünftigen Marktanteile von Luft- und Schienenverkehr in Europa zu ermit- teln, müssen damit verbundene externe Kosten, z. B. für Bau und Instandhaltung der Infrastruktur, sorgfältig abgewogen werden. Diese Aspekte sind Gegenstand zukünftiger Forschung am Bauhaus Luftfahrt. The aspects to be considered in this context are manifold and include future investment and policy design. Here, external costs of both rail and air development, future noise exposure, and the integration of new technology options resulting in efficiency improvements should be taken into account. Further, it is important to optimise complementary aspects of interconnected air-rail travel chains, such as faster airport access times, additional feeder options for airlines to hub airports, or more airport capacities for high-revenue long-range connections. The Modus project focuses on some of these aspects by assessing the performance of a multimodal, integrated Euro- pean transport system. The analyses include the identification of factors that influence passengers’ journey decisions. Among other elements, price, travel times, and service quality have a crucial influence on modal choice. The variations in travel times or market shares are investigated across four different scenar- ios, ranging from a significant shift of traffic from air to rail to a more decentralised and remote air transport network. One of the scenarios assumes scheduled collective travel of under 500 km within the EU to be carbon-neutral by 2030 [2]. Accordingly, in order to assess feasible modal shares of air and rail in Euro- pean connections, careful consideration of related external costs is required, such as for construction and maintenance of infrastructure. Direct-Air-Capture-Technologien zur Dekarbonisierung der Luftfahrt Nachhaltige Kraftstoffoptionen sind essenzieller Bestandteil von Strategien zur Dekarbonisierung der Luftfahrt. Hierbei kommt sogenannten Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) eine besondere Rolle zu, da sie eine Entkoppelung der Kraft- stoffproduktion von der Verfügbarkeit von Biomasse erlauben; in Sunlight-to-Liquid- oder Power-to-Liquid-Prozessen wird statt- dessen recyceltes CO2 als Rohstoff eingesetzt. Die Abscheidung von CO2 aus der Umgebungsluft (Direct Air Capture, DAC) bietet die Möglichkeit, eine ergiebige und nach- haltige Quelle zu nutzen und den Kohlenstoffkreislauf zu schließen. Da es sich hierbei aber um eine relativ neue Techno- logie handelt – weltweit wurden bisher nur wenige Anlagen mit einer gesamten Kapazität von ca. 10.000 t(CO2)/a realisiert –, ergeben sich dahin gehende Unsicherheiten. Die noch bestehen- de Technologieoffenheit spricht dafür, ein breites Spektrum an Lösungen auf zukünftige Leistungsfähigkeit hin zu prüfen und die weitere Forschung und Entwicklung danach auszurichten. Um ein grundlegendes Verständnis für die verschiedenen Tech- nologieoptionen, deren künftige Kostenentwicklung sowie Energiebedarfe, Skalierbarkeit und Integrierbarkeit in den Kraft- stoffproduktionsprozess sicherzustellen, beschäftigen sich Forscher*innen am Bauhaus Luftfahrt mit Scouting und Analy- sen verschiedener Technologieoptionen, welche sich über einen weiten Temperaturbereich erstrecken, sowohl mit flüssigen als auch festen Sorbenzien arbeiten und verschiedenste technolo- gische Reifegrade aufweisen. In einer vergleichenden Betrach- tung werden Trade-offs aufgezeigt; in der Abbildung rechts werden diese qualitativ dargestellt. Direct air capture technologies key to aviation decarbonisation Sustainable fuel options are a key part of aviation decarboni- sation strategies. In this context, renewable fuels of non-bi- ological origin (RFNBOs) are of specific interest, as they enable the decoupling of alternative fuel production from biomass availability; instead, CO2 is used as a carbon feedstock in Sun- light-to-Liquid or Power-to-Liquid processes. Capturing CO2 from ambient air (direct air capture, DAC) offers the possibility to make use of this abundant and sustainable carbon source and, thereby, allows the carbon cycle to be closed. DAC is of limited technological maturity – worldwide, only a few plants with a total capacity of 10,000 t(CO2)/a have been realised – and, consequently, this technology is associated with considerable uncertainties. As a variety of DAC methods have been proposed, considering a wide range of approaches is key to evaluate the overall DAC development status and poten- tial and to steer research and development efforts accordingly. To obtain a thorough understanding of available technology options, their future costs and energy demands, as well as scal- ability and process integrability for different fuel pathways, researchers at Bauhaus Luftfahrt conduct scouting activities and subsequently analyse promising DAC solutions. These are ver- satile and stretch across a wide temperature range, employ solid or liquid sorbents, and differ substantially when it comes to their technological readiness. Energiesparpotenzial revolutionärer Antriebskonzepte für 2035 und 2050 In einem agil durchgeführten Kurzprojekt untersuchte das Bau- haus Luftfahrt für die MTU Aero Engines mehrere revolutionäre Antriebskonzepte für drei Flugzeuggrößen und unterschiedliche Indienststellungszeitpunkte. Revolutionäre Antriebskonzepte sind aufgrund ihres Potenzials wichtiger Bestandteil einer Nach- haltigkeitsstrategie. Die bewerteten Antriebskonzepte waren ein Getriebeturbofan (GTF), ein Water-Enhanced Turbofan (WET), eine Composite Cycle Engine (CCE), ein wasserstoffbe- triebener Getriebeturbofan (H2-GTF) und ein Brennstoffzellenan- trieb (FC). Die untersuchten Flugzeuggrößen beinhalteten ein Regional-, ein Kurz-/Mittelstrecken- und ein Langstreckenflug- zeug. Technologische Entwicklungen wurden bis zum Jahr 2050 abgeschätzt, wobei die jeweiligen Indienststellungen je nach Antriebskonzept sinnvoll gewählt wurden. Hierbei kam ein stark vereinfachter, statistisch basierter Flugzeugentwurf zum Ein- satz. Die evolutionäre Entwicklung der konventionellen Flug- zeugtechnologieaspekte (z. B. Widerstands- und Gewichtsre- duktion) wurde durch erwartete jährliche Verbesserungsraten eingepreist. Neuartige Flugzeugkomponenten (z. B. Wasser- stofftanks) wurden durch geeignete, vereinfachte Methoden eingebunden. Die Leistungsdaten der Antriebe wurden teils durch die MTU Aero Engines und teils durch das Bauhaus Luft- fahrt bestimmt. Die H2-Konzepte erfahren durch die Integration eines H2-Speichers Nachteile in der Flugzeugstruktur und der aerodynamischen Güte, während das FC-Konzept zusätzlich durch die Integration der Wärmeabfuhr eine erhöhte Komplexi- tät erfährt. Energy saving potential of revolutionary propulsion concepts for 2035 and 2050 In a short project carried out in an agile manner, Bauhaus Luft- fahrt investigated several revolutionary propulsion concepts for three aircraft sizes and different dates of entry into service for MTU Aero Engines. Due to their potential, revolutionary pro- pulsion concepts are an important component of a sustainability strategy. The propulsion concepts evaluated were a geared tur- bofan (GTF), a water-enhanced turbofan (WET), a composite cycle engine (CCE), a hydrogen-powered geared turbofan (H2-GTF), and a fuel cell (FC). Aircraft sizes studied included a regional, a short-/medium-haul, and a long-haul aircraft. Techno- logical developments were estimated up to the year 2050, whereby the respective entry into service was specifically selected depending on the propulsion concept. A highly simpli- fied, statistically based aircraft design was used. The evolution- ary development of conventional aircraft technology aspects (e.g. drag and weight reduction) was priced in by expected annual improvement rates. Novel aircraft components (e.g. hydrogen tanks) were incorporated through appropriate simpli- fied methods. The performance data of the propulsion systems were determined partly by MTU Aero Engines and partly by Bauhaus Luftfahrt. The H2 concepts experience disadvantages in the aircraft structure and aerodynamic performance due to the integration of an H2 storage tank, while the FC concept addi- tionally experiences increased complexity due to the integration of heat dissipation. Assessment scenario In order to enable reliable conclusions, technologically compa- rable scenarios were created for the respective entry into service years. This makes the concepts comparable to each other and to the SRIA basis. The comparison of revolutionary propulsion concepts with the help of a simplified aircraft design and the integration of the expected performance data for the respective propulsion systems was the focus of this project. With the methodology used, it was possible to produce the desired data and analyses in a rapid manner in order to be able to evaluate the energy-saving potential of the propulsion concepts and energy sources more precisely. Ultimately, this also enables an assessment of the climate impact of the propulsion concepts considered and provides a decision-making basis for the preparation of further research and development projects. Der Vergleich von revolutionären Antriebskonzepten mit- hilfe eines vereinfachten Flugzeugentwurfes und der Inte- gration der erwarteten Leistungsdaten für die jeweiligen Antriebe stand im Mittelpunkt dieses Projektes. Mit der verwendeten Methodik konnten zeitnah die gewünschten Daten und Analysen erstellt werden, um das Energiespar- potenzial der Antriebskonzepte und Energieträger genauer bewerten zu können. Letztendlich wird so auch eine Bewertung der Klimawirksamkeit der betrachteten Antriebskonzepte ermöglicht und eine Entscheidungs- grundlage für die Vorbereitung weiterer Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekte bereitgestellt.

Which technical production pathways are available for a long-term supply of renewable fuels? How do these pathways perform with respect to technical, environmental, and socioeconomic criteria? And what are suitable measures to introduce the required volumes of sustainable jet fuel into the market? Fuel options with promising long- term potential like advanced biofuels from residues and waste streams or synthe- tic fuels from solar and wind energy represent important research topics in this context. Der Forschungsbereich „Future Aviation Fuels“ konzentriert sich auf folgende Fragestellungen: In welchen Mengen können erneuerbare Kraftstoffe in Zukunft produziert werden? Welche technischen Produktionspfade stehen für eine lang- fristige Versorgung zur Verfügung? The aviation industry has revised its climate targets in 2021; the aim is now to achieve net carbon neutrality by 2050. Hydrogen, synthetic fuels from solar and wind energy, as well as advanced biofuels from residues and wastes are important options for a successful transition from conventional jet fuels to renewable energy carriers within just 30 years. Given the significant uncertainties along the respective process chains, it is important to develop a set of robust alternatives such that sound technological solutions are available in case key enabling technologies do not materialise their assumed potentials. Im vergangenen Jahr wurden die Klimaziele der Luftfahrt nochmals verschärft; nun wird eine Treibhausgasneutra- lität bis 2050 anvisiert. Wasserstoff, synthetische Kraftstoffe aus Sonnen- und Windenergie sowie fortgeschrittene Bio- kraftstoffe aus Abfall- und Reststoffen sind wichtige Optio- nen, um den Luftverkehr in knapp 30 Jahren auf erneuer- bare Energieträger umzustellen. Mit Blick auf die erheblichen Unsicherheiten entlang der jeweiligen Pro- zessketten sollten robuste Alternativen weiterentwickelt werden, damit auch dann tragfähige Lösungen bereitste- hen, wenn einzelne Schlüsseltechnologien ihr projiziertes Potenzial nicht materialisieren können.

50 51 I I S L E U F N O T A V A E R U T U F Aktualisiertes Hintergrundpapier zu Power-to-Liquid-Kraft- stoffen Power-to-Liquid-Kraftstoffe (PtL) gelten als skalierbare Schlüs- seltechnologie für einen CO2-neutralen Luftverkehr. Deren immenses Potenzial in technischer, ökonomischer sowie ökolo- gischer Hinsicht haben das Bauhaus Luftfahrt und die Ludwig- Bölkow-Systemtechnik (LBST) in einem Hintergrundpapier „Power-to-Liquids – A scalable and sustainable fuel supply per- spective for aviation“ zusammengefasst. Das Dokument kann auf der Website des Umweltbundesamts heruntergeladen werden [1]. Bereits 2016 hatten Bauhaus Luftfahrt und LBST im Auftrag des Umweltbundesamts ein Hintergrundpapier zu strombasierten Kraftstoffen verfasst [2] und damit dazu beigetragen, PtL-Kraft- stoffe in der Diskussion um eine erneuerbare Kraftstoffversor- gung des Luftverkehrs zu verankern. Mittlerweile werden PtL- Kraftstoffe als wichtige Option anerkannt, um die Luftfahrt bis Mitte des Jahrhunderts CO2-neutral zu gestalten. Weiterhin ist mit einer wachsenden Zahl an Projektentwicklungen der Pro- duktionshochlauf von PtL-Flugkraftstoffen in greifbare Nähe gerückt. Das aktualisierte Hintergrundpapier diskutiert unter anderem PtL-Herstellungsrouten, Ressourcenbedarfe und Produktions- potenziale. So muss, um PtL-Kraftstoffe nachhaltig in großen Mengen herzustellen, überwiegend auf Sonnen- und Wind- energie zurückgegriffen werden. Es zeigt sich, dass dann das technische Produktionspotenzial in Europa den europäischen Kraftstoffbedarf der Luftfahrt etwa um das Zehnfache über- steigt. Trotz erheblicher Kostensenkungspotenziale bleiben PtL- Kraftstoffe auch längerfristig mit 1170 – 1740 €/t vergleichsweise teuer, allerdings fällt der Ressourcenverbrauch in Bezug auf Wasser- und Landbedarf deutlich geringer aus als bei Kraftstof- fen aus Anbaubiomasse. Update: Background paper on Power-to-Liquid fuels Due to their scalability, Power-to-Liquid (PTL) fuels are a key technology for carbon-neutral aviation. Bauhaus Luftfahrt and Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik (LBST) summarised the great potential of PtL in terms of technical, economic, and envi- ronmental aspects within the background paper “Power-to-Liq- uids – A scalable and sustainable fuel supply perspective for aviation”. The document is available for download from the website of the German Environment Agency [1]. The initial version of the background paper, which was issued in 2016 by Bauhaus Luftfahrt and LBST on behalf of the German Environment Agency [2], anchored PtL fuels within discussions on the future sustainable fuel supply of aviation. Meanwhile, PtL fuels are commonly understood as an important option to achieve carbon-neutral aviation by mid-century. Furthermore, with a growing number of project developments, the initial pro- duction ramp-up of PtL jet fuels is now within reach. The updated background paper reviews the basic principles of typical routes for PtL fuel production as well as resource and production potentials. To meet the required scale, PtL fuels need to be primarily produced from solar and wind energy. In that case, the technical production potential within Europe exceeds the European jet fuel demand by about one order of magnitude. While significant cost reductions are expected, long-term PtL fuel production costs remain comparably high, in a range of 1170 – 1740 €/t. On the other hand, PtL fuels are much more resource-efficient in terms of land and water demand than biofuel production from energy crops. Production costs and greenhouse gas emissions of key aviation fuel options Global warming potential versus production costs of key options for renewable aviation fuels, in relation to conventional jet fuel prices, ICAO default emissions, and threshold values from the European Renewable Energy Directive (EU-RED II). ICAO default emissions for most first-generation biofuel path- ways (examples: AtJ from corn ethanol, HEFA from soybean oil) exceed European threshold values for minimum GHG emission reductions. HEFA fuels from waste fats, oils, and greases (FOG) usually meet GHG requirements, but their scal- ability is limited by feedstock availability. Biofuel conversion pathways for advanced feedstock (BtL, HTL, Pyr) unlock signifi- cant additional feedstock potentials, but further research and development is required to commercialise advanced biofuels. The projected production costs and GHG emissions of syn- thetic fuels from CO2 and H2O (PtL, StL) and LH2 depend criti- cally on the renewable resource potential at the plant location. At a given location, costs and emissions for LH2 production (without transport) will be significantly lower compared to PtL and StL due to a higher conversion efficiency and the need of a carbon source for kerosene synthesis. Die zu erwartenden Kosten und Treib- hausgasemissionen der synthetischen Kraftstoffe aus CO2 und H2O (PtL, StL) sowie für LH2 hängen stark von den vorhande- nen Potenzialen an erneuerbaren Energien am Produktions- standort ab. Die Bereitstellung von LH2 ist an einem gegebe- nen Standort (ohne Transport) mit deutlich geringeren Kosten und Emissionen verbunden als die Herstellung synthetischer Kraftstoffe, da der Umwandlungswirkungsgrad höher ist und die Kerosinsynthese zusätzlich eine Kohlenstoffquelle benötigt.

54 55 I I S L E U F N O T A V A E R U T U F Hydrothermale Verflüssigung – Ein Weg zu umweltfreund- lichem Kerosin Fortschrittliche Biokraftstoffe könnten in Zukunft einen erhebli- chen Beitrag zur Erfüllung der Klimaziele des Luftverkehrs leis- ten. Die hydrothermale Verflüssigung (HTL, hydrothermal liquefaction) ermöglicht es, aus einer Vielzahl biogener Rohstoffe unter hydrothermalen Prozessbedingungen (T~350 °C, p~200 bar) Rohöle zu produzieren, die sich nach einer Aufbereitung als Kerosin eignen. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt hat in den letzten Jahren mit dem EU- Projekt HyFlexFuel einen Beitrag zur HTL-Forschung geleistet, das im Herbst 2021 nach vierjähriger Laufzeit erfolgreich abge- schlossen wurde. Dabei war das Bauhaus Luftfahrt für die Koordination und die ganzheitliche Bewertung des Produktions- prozesses verantwortlich. Die Ergebnisse [1, 2] zeigen, dass sich HTL-Kraftstoffe zu nahezu kompetitiven Preisen produzieren lassen. Bei Verwendung von Abfallprodukten wie Klärschlamm könnten unter günstigen Rahmenbedingungen Produktionskosten von etwa 0,50 €/kg erzielt werden. Dabei wird angenommen, dass für die thermi- sche Behandlung durch HTL ähnliche Entsorgungsgebühren erhoben werden können wie bei der heute gängigen Verbren- nung. Die Treibhausgasemissionen sind dabei zwischen 60 % und 80 % gegenüber konventionellem Kerosin reduziert. Die Sensitivitätsanalyse zeigt, dass die Klimawirkung durch nachhal- tige Wärmebereitstellungskonzepte und erneuerbaren Wasser- stoff für die Kraftstoffaufbereitung noch deutlich stärker reduziert werden kann. Um die HTL-Technologie zur Marktreife zu bringen, bedarf es weiterem Forschungsaufwand im Bereich der Integration der Prozessschritte, der Rohölaufbereitung sowie der Kraftstoff- zertifizierung. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) enables the conversion of a broad variety of organic feedstock into biocrude under high temperatures and pressures (T~350 °C, p~200 bar). The resulting biocrude can be further upgraded to a jet fuel product. During the past years, Bauhaus Luftfahrt contributed to HTL research in the four-year EU project HyFlexFuel, which was suc- cessfully completed in autumn 2021. Within HyFlexFuel, Bau- haus Luftfahrt was responsible for the project coordination and the holistic evaluation of the production process via system analyses. The results [1, 2] show that HTL fuels might be produced at near-competitive cost. Under favourable conditions, production costs of about 0.50 €/kg were evaluated for the conversion of wet waste streams, such as sewage sludge. Thereby, it is assumed that additional revenue at a similar level as for current disposal practices, such as mono-incineration, can be generated for the thermal treatment of sewage sludge by HTL. Green- house gas emissions are reduced by between 60 % and 80 % compared to conventional jet fuel. A sensitivity analysis sug- gests that the climate impact can be further reduced through renewable process heat supply and by utilising green hydrogen for biocrude upgrading via hydrotreatment. Along the commercialisation roadmap for HTL technologies, further research is required in the areas of integrating the pro- cess steps, crude oil processing, and fuel certification to finally achieve commercial maturity.

Power-to-Liquid-Gestehungskosten im internationalen Vergleich Der Vorteil von Power-to-Liquid-Kraftstoffen (PtL) ist ihr Poten- zial, bei vergleichsweise geringen Umweltauswirkungen große Mengen erneuerbarer Kraftstoffe bereitstellen zu können. Doch wie teuer ist ein PtL-Kraftstoff? Kann er sich auf einem freien Markt gegen fossiles Kerosin behaupten? Und welche Stand- orte eignen sich für eine kostengünstige PtL-Produktion? Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, hat das Bauhaus Luftfahrt im Rahmen des Verbundprojektes PowerFuel eine Methode ent- wickelt, welche die Gestehungskosten von PtL-Kraftstoffen an ausgewählten Standorten weltweit abschätzt. Dabei werden die Subsysteme der Produktionsanlage dimensioniert mit dem Ziel, die Kraftstoffgestehungskosten zu minimieren. Mithilfe von stündlich aufgelösten Wind- und Solarstromerzeugungspro- filen werden hierbei die klimatischen Rahmenbedingungen jedes Standortes individuell berücksichtigt. An vielen Standorten minimiert ein Mix aus Wind- und Photovoltaikstrom (PV) die Gestehungskosten. Generell erreichen gute Windstandorte unter den getroffenen Annahmen günstigere Gestehungskos- ten als gute Solarstandorte. Weiterhin werden in der Optimie- rung die Tag-Nacht-Zyklen der PV durch Gasspeicher ausgegli- chen, während es für Windprofile kostengünstiger ist, wenn die Kraftstoffsynthese ohne wesentlichen Speichereinsatz der Stromerzeugung folgt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Kosten für PtL-Kraftstoff in naher Zukunft wahrscheinlich noch jenseits von 1,50 €/L liegen werden. In Deutschland liegen die Gestehungskosten erwar- tungsgemäß höher als an internationalen Topstandorten mit günstigeren Sonnen- oder Windverhältnissen. An international comparison of Power-to-Liquid production costs P ower-to-Liquid (PtL) offers the potential to provide large quantities of renewable fuel with a relatively low environ- mental impact. But how much does PtL fuel cost? Can it com- pete against fossil kerosene in a free market? And which sites are suitable for low-cost PtL production? To answer these ques- tions, Bauhaus Luftfahrt has developed a method in the course of the PowerFuel collaborative project to estimate the produc- tion costs of PtL fuel at selected locations worldwide. The meth- od sizes the plant’s subsystems with the goal of minimising the costs of fuel production. The climatic conditions of each site are taken into account with the help of location-specific, hourly resolved wind and solar power generation profiles. At most sites, a mix of wind and photovoltaic (PV) power minimises the costs of production. In general, good wind sites achieve lower production costs than good solar sites under the assumptions made. Furthermore, PV-powered plant designs buffer diurnal cycles by including gas storage. In contrast, it is more cost- effective in wind-powered plants to follow the electricity gener- ation directly without storage. Our results show that PtL fuels will likely cost more than 1.50 €/L in the near future. Der Projektpartner HyGear entwickelte eine Fischer-Tropsch- Anlage, die dieses Gas vor Ort zu Kerosin verarbeitet. 2019 gelang es damit erstmalig, unter realen Bedingungen in einer integrierten solarthermochemischen Anlage Kerosin aus Was- ser, CO2 und konzentriertem Sonnenlicht herzustellen. SUN-to-LIQUID hat während der COP26-Konferenz im Novem- ber 2021 in Glasgow unter mehr als 2000 eingereichten Projek- ten aus 182 Ländern als eines der besten Umweltprojekte den 22. Energy Globe World Award in der Kategorie Nachhaltige Energietechnologien erhalten [3]. Die Auszeichnung wird seit 1999 von der unabhängigen Energy Globe Foundation verliehen. The concept was already identified as potentially impactful by the Technology Radar in 2008 and further analysed and deve- loped in European research alliances. In 2014, SOLAR-JET (2011 – 2015) [1] proved its feasibility for the first time in the laborato- ry. SUN-to-LIQUID (2016 – 2019) [2] took this technology to the next stage of development and tested it under real conditions in a solar tower system developed specifically for this purpose by IMDEA Energía and DLR. A solar reactor developed at ETH Zurich produced hydrogen and carbon monoxide from water and CO2 via a solar thermochemical redox cycle. The project partner HyGear developed a Fischer-Tropsch plant that processes this gas into kerosene on site. In 2019, this made it possible for the first time to produce kerosene from water, CO2, and concentrat- ed sunlight under real conditions in an integrated solar thermo- chemical plant. During the COP26 Conference in Glasgow in November 2021, SUN-to-LIQUID received the 22nd Energy Globe World Award in the category of Sustainable Energy Technologies, as one of the best environmental projects among more than 2000 submis- sions from 182 countries [3]. The award has been presented by the independent Energy Globe Foundation since 1999. Solar thermochemical fuels could cover the world’s jet fuel demand by using less than 1 % of the world’s desert areas and are therefore considered a promising building block towards climate-neutral aviation.

The milestones achieved and our analyses of the performance potential speak in favour of further promoting the technology. However, in order to reduce the investment risk in a CAPEX-dominated technology, strategic partnerships for market introduction are also required. SWISS has announced that it will be the first airline to fly with solar kerosene from industrial production by Synhelion, the start-up spun off by project partner ETH Zurich. In this context, production processes and logistics chains are analysed in order to gauge their scalability and their ecological and economic performance. These assessments extend to the required hydrogen-handling infrastructure and related adaptations of airport procedures. Further, key enabling component technologies for hydrogen- powered energy and propulsion systems are conceptually investigated. Air- craft-integrated analysis sheds light on synergies. All learnings contribute to a refined understanding of the potential role of hydrogen with regard to aviation’s long-term target of climate neutrality. Die ganzheitliche Bewertung von Wasserstoff als Luftfahrtkraftstoff ist ein zen- trales Ziel der Forschungsaktivitäten des Bauhaus Luftfahrt. Hierzu werden die nötigen Produktionsprozesse und logistischen Netzwerke hinsichtlich ihrer Skalierbarkeit sowie ihrer ökologischen und ökonomischen Leistungsfähigkeit analysiert. Unter Einbindung von Expert*innen von Airbus, dem Flughafen München und Bauhaus Luftfahrt haben Studierende der Technischen Universität München zukünftige Pfade und Voraussetzungen für die Implementierung von Wasserstoff für den Luftfahrtsektor erarbeitet. Aus der plausiblen und konsistenten Analyse und Kombination verschie- dener Faktoren resultierten drei Szenarien für den Zeithorizont 2035+ (Abbildung auf Seite 65). Diese unterscheiden sich insbe- sondere bezüglich der technologischen Entwicklungen, politi- scher Anreize und Subventionen, der Synergieeffekte mit weite- ren Industrien oder der Verfügbarkeit grünen Wasserstoffes. Die Marktdurchdringung von Wasserstoffflugzeugen wird ent- scheidend beeinflusst durch den Reifegrad von Wasserstoff- technologien, die notwendigen Investitionen zur Bereitstellung und Anpassung der Infrastruktur und die Integration in die ope- rationellen Abläufe von Fluggesellschaften (Abbildung auf Seite 67) und reicht vom globalen Einsatzspektrum bis hin zur Nischenanwendung in bestimmten Regionen. Zusätzlich zu der in den Szenarien diskutierten Implementierung von Wasserstoff auf der Kurz- und Mittelstrecke sieht das Bauhaus Luftfahrt auch auf der Langstrecke ein vielversprechendes Potenzial [1]. Aus den gewonnenen Erkenntnissen lassen sich Implikationen für diverse Akteure ableiten. Hydrogen in aviation: Understanding uncertainties by using scenarios The use of green hydrogen to achieve the Paris Climate Agreement also represents a promising fuel option in avia- tion. With the involvement of experts from Airbus, Munich Air- port, and Bauhaus Luftfahrt, students of the Technical University of Munich have developed future paths and prerequisites for the implementation of hydrogen for the aviation sector. The plausi- ble and consistent analysis and combination of various factors resulted in three scenarios for the time horizon 2035+ (figure on page 65). These differ in particular with regard to technological developments, political incentives and subsidies, synergy effects with other industries, or the availability of green hydro- gen. The market penetration of hydrogen aircraft is significantly influ- enced by the readiness of hydrogen technologies, the neces- sary investment for the provision and adaptation of infrastruc- ture, and the integration into airline operations (figure on page 67), and ranges from global implementation to niche applica- tions in specific regions. In addition to introducing hydrogen to the short- and medium-haul market, as discussed in the scenar- ios, Bauhaus Luftfahrt sees promising potential for the long-haul segment [1]. From these findings, implications can be derived for various stakeholders. Airports, for example, are faced with major chal- lenges due to the required infrastructure for storage and distri- bution, the establishment of safety standards for handling hydrogen, and ensuring the parallel operation of conventional and hydrogen-powered aircraft.

Modellentwicklung zur Bewertung einer wasserstoff- betriebenen Composite Cycle Engine Das Konzept der Composite Cycle Engine (CCE) hat in diversen Untersuchungen signifikantes Potenzial zur Effizienzsteigerung von Flugtriebwerken auch gegenüber zukünftig erwarteter Gasturbinentechnologie gezeigt. Es basiert auf der Integration von Kolbenmaschinen im Kerntriebwerk moderner Turbofan- antriebe und ermöglicht extreme Nebenstromverhältnisse (>30). Die kerosinbetriebene CCE zeigte jedoch Nachteile durch erhöhte Stickoxidemissionen und höheres Antriebsgewicht. Mit dem Wechsel des Brennstoffes hin zu Wasserstoff ergeben sich aufgrund der abweichenden Verbrennungs- und Produktgas- eigenschaften neue Ansatzpunkte, dem entgegenzuwirken. Erste Schritte zur Bewertung der H2-CCE wurden mit der Umstellung und Validierung des bestehenden Leistungsrech- nungsprogrammes für Kolbenmaschinen auf den Wasserstoff- betrieb bereits durchgeführt. Eine initiale Analyse der H2-Kolbenmaschine deutet auf einen erhöhten Wärmeverlust gegenüber dem Kerosinbetrieb hin, welcher sich unter anderem auf fehlende Rußbildung bei der H2-Verbrennung zurückführen lässt. Die Verlustwärme der Kol- benmaschine kann im CCE-Konzept jedoch teilweise vom Kernmassenstrom aufgenommen werden, wodurch negative Auswirkungen auf die Antriebseffizienz begrenzt werden. Ande- rerseits bieten die Wasserstoffverbrennungsgase eine höhere spezifische Arbeitsfähigkeit, wodurch Größe und Gewicht der Kolbenkomponenten reduziert werden können. Zudem ist eine Optimierung der Auslegungsparameter der H2-Kolbenmaschine notwendig, wie eine Studie zu den Ventilsteuerzeiten zeigt. Eine umfassende Untersuchung des H2-CCE-Konzeptes ist daher von großem Interesse für die weitere Bewertung der CCE-Technologie. Hydrogen in commercial aviation – paving the way for the Composite Cycle Engine concept? Wasserstoff in der kom- merziellen Luftfahrt – Wegbereiter für das Composite-Cycle-Engine- Konzept? Assessment of a hydrogen-fuelled Composite Cycle Engine V arious studies have demonstrated the Composite Cycle Engine (CCE) concept’s significant potential to increase the efficiency of aircraft propulsion systems, even when comparing to expected future gas turbine technology. It is based on the integration of piston engines in the core engine of modern tur- bofan engines and enables extreme bypass ratios (>30). How- ever, the kerosene-fuelled CCE is characterised by disadvantag- es due to increased nitrogen oxide emissions and higher engine weight. By changing the fuel to hydrogen, the different combus- tion characteristics and product gas properties enable new approaches to counteract these issues. First steps towards evaluating the H2-CCE have already been taken with the conver- sion and validation of the existing in-house piston engine perfor- mance simulation framework for hydrogen operation. An initial analysis of the H2 piston engine indicates an increased heat loss compared to kerosene operation, which can be attrib- uted, among other things, to the shortfall of soot formation. However, in the CCE concept, the heat loss of the piston engine can partially be recovered by the core mass flow, limiting nega- tive effects on propulsion system efficiency. On the other hand, the hydrogen combustion gases offer a higher specific work capacity, which means that the size and weight of the piston components can be reduced. Moreover, H2 piston engine design parameters need to be optimised, as illustrated for valve timing settings. A comprehensive investigation of the H2-CCE concept is therefore of great interest for the further evaluation of CCE technology. 68 69 I N O T A V A I N E G O R D Y H

Die Fähigkeit, neuartige Tech- nologiekonzepte früh systemisch bewerten zu können, ist daher von entscheidender Bedeutung für eine klare Orientierung wei- tergehender Forschung und Entwicklung. Forscher*innen des Bauhaus Luftfahrt haben nun eine erste technische Bewertung einer synergetischen Kombination aus Brennstoffzellen- und Gasturbinentechnologie vorgenommen, die im Bauhaus-Luftfahrt-Jahrbuch 2020 erstmals vorgestellt wurde. Das vorgeschlagene Hybridkonzept nutzt den von einer Brennstoffzelle erzeugten Wassermassenstrom, um den Wir- kungsgrad, die Leistung und die NOx-Emissionseigenschaften des Gasturbinentriebwerkes durch Dampfeinspritzung in der Brennkammer zu verbessern. In der integrierten Designstudie für eine künftige Wasserstoff- anwendung auf der Kurz-/Mittelstrecke wurden neueste, im Labormaßstab erfolgreich getestete Brennstoffzellentechnolo- gien mit moderner Gasturbinentechnologie kombiniert. Für ein optimales Design auf Festoxidbrennstoffzellenbasis wurden Kraftstoffeinsparungen von etwa 7 % ermittelt. Das optimale Systemdesign weist hierbei einen Gesamtleistungsanteil von 43 % für die Brennstoffzelle auf, was zu einem Wasser-Luft- Verhältnis von 6 % in der Gasturbine führt und eine Verringerung der NOx-Emissionen im Reiseflug um rund 60 % bewirkt. The capability of rapid and integrated eval- uation of upcoming technology concepts is vital in order to pro- vide clear guidance for further research and development. Researchers of Bauhaus Luftfahrt have now performed an initial technical assessment of a synergistic combination of fuel cell and gas turbine technology first introduced in the Bauhaus Luft- fahrt Yearbook in 2020. The proposed hybrid concept uses the water mass flow produced by a hydrogen fuel cell in order to improve the efficiency, power output, and NOx emission char- acteristics of the gas turbine engine through burner steam injection. In an integrated design study for a future short-/medium-range aircraft application based on liquid hydrogen fuel, the latest fuel cell technology options successfully tested on a laboratory scale were combined with advanced gas turbine technology. For an optimum design case based on solid oxide fuel cell technology, block fuel savings of approximately 7 % were found. The opti- mum design features a total power share of 43 % for the fuel cell, translating to a water-to-air ratio of 6 % in the gas turbine and yielding around 60 % reduced NOx emissions during cruise. With such emission reduction potentials initially identified, more detailed analyses of this promising hybrid system are clearly motivated.

Green hydrogen provides excellent opportunities for emissions reduction, prompting many sectors to consider this sustain- able energy carrier. With its properties differing fundamentally from conventional fuel, hydrogen implies principal adaptations of technological solutions, designs, and processes along the entire fuel life cycle. Evaluation of its applicability to the avia- tion sector requires an in-depth understanding of the implica- tions of a full energy system transition. Drawing on the enabling interdisciplinarity of the Bauhaus Luftfahrt team, we strive for holistic answers to the key questions around hydrogen aviation. This market segment’s development is in line with the growth of global air traffic and thereby contributes to a significant amount of the aviation climate impact. To address the unique set of challenges, oppor- tunities and solutions comprehensively, the principle aspects of market- and technology-based impacts and solutions necessitate dedicated analyses and are therefore combined in this research area. In this context, Bauhaus Luft- fahrt focuses its investigations on market structures, business opportunities and technology improvements as well as the aircraft concept synthesis spe- cific to the long-range segment. Zukünftige Passagieranforderungen auf Langstrecken- flügen im „New Normal“ Die COVID-19-Pandemie wird zunehmend Teil unseres norma- len Alltages. Gleichzeitig kreiert sie eine neue Marktdynamik in der Luftfahrt. Um der Branche eine Entscheidungshilfe bei Pro- dukt- und Serviceangeboten zu bieten, untersuchte das Bauhaus Luftfahrt [1] im Rahmen einer Passagierstudie deren zukünftige Anforderungen an Langstreckenflüge in der aktuellen Über- gangszeit zu dieser neuen Normalität. Aufgrund der hohen Erträge und des geringen Substitutionspotenzials sind Langstre- ckenflüge für Airlines ein wichtiges Produkt und könnten durch Nachholeffekte eine attraktive Einnahmequelle werden. Im Rahmen der Studie wurden eine wahlbasierte Conjoint- Analyse aufgesetzt und 269 deutsche Privat- und Geschäfts- reisende zu deren Kaufverhalten bei einem hypothetischen Langstreckenflug befragt. Mithilfe der durch die Antworten gewonnenen Daten zu Wahlmöglichkeiten zwischen verschie- denen Ancillary Services – als Upgrade-Möglichkeit eines Langstreckenfluges – wurden Kundenpräferenzen erfasst und quantifiziert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass der Preis für Zusatzleistungen immer noch die größte Relevanz für Passagier*innen hat, gefolgt von einem Sitzplatz-Upgrade für mehr Komfort. Eine CO2-Kompensation wird besonders von weiblichen und älteren Passagieren als interessanter Service wahrgenommen. Hygie- nebezogene Zusatzleistungen, wie die Desinfektion des Sitzes oder Hygieneprodukte, wurden kaum ausgewählt und bringen daher einen geringeren Nutzen. Future passenger requirements on long-haul flights in the New Normal The COVID-19 pandemic is increasingly becoming a part of our day-to-day lives. At the same time, the situation is creat- ing new market dynamics in the aviation sector. To support the industry in its decision-making on product and service offerings, Bauhaus Luftfahrt [1] conducted a passenger survey to investi- gate its future requirements for long-haul flights in the current transition period to this New Normal. Due to high yields and low substitution potential, long-haul flights are an essential product for airlines and could become an attractive source of revenue through possible catch-up effects. A choice-based conjoint analysis was set up as part of this endeavour, surveying 269 German private and business passen- gers on their purchasing behaviour for a hypothetical long-haul flight. The passenger survey data were gathered and preferen- ces quantified using the data obtained from the responses on choices between different ancillary services, which were pre- sented as possible upgrade options for a long-haul flight. The results show that the price of additional services still has the highest relevance for passengers, followed by a seat upgrade for more comfort. Especially female and elderly pas- sengers perceive the CO2 compensation as an attractive ancil- lary service. Additional hygiene-related services, such as seat disinfection or hygiene amenity products, were hardly chosen and seem to provide fewer benefits. Bewertung des COVID-19-Expositionsrisikos von Boarding- prozessen Die COVID-19-Pandemie hat den globalen Luftverkehr stark eingeschränkt und das Infektionsrisiko während der Reise in der Flugzeugkabine in den Fokus gerückt. Die am Bauhaus Luftfahrt entwickelte Passagierflusssimulation PAXelerate [1] wurde auf- grund dieser Thematik um eine Bewertung des individuellen COVID-19-Expositionsrisikos von Passagier*innen während des Boardingprozesses erweitert [2]. Die grundlegende Modellierung besteht aus der Verfolgung aller Passagierbewegungen in der Kabine während des Boardings, der Bestimmung der Nähe zu anderen Passagier*innen sowie der Überwachung der Dauer und Anzahl der einzelnen Kontakte. Dieser Ansatz ähnelt dem von Apple und Google eingeführten Framework zur Kontaktverfolgung auf Smartphones. Die Auswertung der Daten für ein zweigängiges Mittelstrecken- flugzeug (252 PAX) weist auf ein erhöhtes Expositionsrisiko für Szenarien hin, in denen sortiert von hinten nach vorne oder von vorne nach hinten eingestiegen wird. Einstiegsszenarien wie Fenster-zu-Gang, eine zufällige Reihenfolge oder das soge- nannte Steffen-Verfahren scheinen hingegen vorteilhaft zu sein. Als Referenz dient hier jeweils das konventionelle klassenweise Einsteigen. Generell zeigen sich Vorteile bei Sortierreihenfolgen, in denen die Anzahl der Interaktionen und Stausituationen reduziert wird. Risk assessment on COVID-19 exposure of boarding processes The COVID-19 pandemic has severely restricted global air travel and brought into focus the risk of infection during travel in the aircraft cabin. In response to this issue, the passen- ger flow simulation PAXelerate [1] developed at Bauhaus Luft- fahrt was extended to include an assessment of individual pas- senger COVID-19 exposure risk during the boarding process [2]. The basic modelling consists of tracking all passenger move- ment in the cabin during boarding, determining proximity to other passengers, and monitoring the duration and number of individual contacts. This approach is similar to the framework introduced by Apple and Google for contact tracing on smart- phones. Analysis of the data for a two-aisle medium-haul aircraft (252 PAX) indicates an increased exposure risk for scenarios involv- ing sorted back-to-front or front-to-back boarding. Boarding scenarios such as window-to-aisle, a random sequence, or the so-called Steffen procedure, on the other hand, appear to be beneficial. Conventional class-wise boarding is used as a refer- ence in each case. In general, advantages are visible for sorting sequences in which the number of interactions and congestion situations is reduced. Operational measures are one key element to reduce the climate impact of aviation. Especially in the long-range segment, revolutionary network adaptations and the inte- gration of novel energy carriers and technologies foster this, as shown in business innovations in the Hy-ShAir project [1]. Novel passenger requirements are a driver for disruptive business models, and cabin design and processes do emerge, creating a stronger need for resilience. The two presented articles contribute to these specific aspects and exemplify the heterogeneous nature of topics in this field and the need for a holistic assessment. To fully understand the potential of such air solutions, the required ecosystem of stakeholders like users, vehicle manu- facturers, vertiport and vehicle operators, authorities, governments, and societies have to be holistically considered, and the complementation bene- fits for existing transport systems have to be analysed. To what extent con- ventional aviation can benefit from these developments in the area of tech- nologies, processes at the vertiports, flight management, regulations, certification, market actors, and business models is the subject of our ongoing research. Passagierakzeptanz von hybrid-elektrischen Flugzeugen in Deutschland Die Nutzung von erneuerbaren Energien in Form von Elektrizität und Wasserstoff bietet zwei Optionen für einen klimaneutralen Luftverkehr, die aber neue Flugzeugkonfigurationen insbeson- dere für Regional- und Kurzstreckenflüge erfordern. Für die Markteinführung dieses neuen Typs von hybrid-elektrischen Flugzeugen ist es von größter Bedeutung, die öffentliche Akzep- tanz und die Faktoren, die diese beeinflussen könnten, frühzeitig besser zu verstehen. Im Rahmen einer repräsentativen Online- Umfrage wurden mehr als 3000 Personen in Deutschland befragt, die vor Beginn der COVID-19-Pandemie aktiv innerhalb Europas gereist sind. Die wichtigsten Ergebnisse sind, dass eine große Mehrheit (74 %) der Befragten zustimmt, mit hybrid- elektrischen Flugzeugen fliegen zu wollen. Die Mehrheit (77 %) der Befragten, die in Erwägung ziehen würden, mit hybrid- elektrischen Flugzeugen zu fliegen, sieht private Reisezwecke wie Freizeit und soziale Aktivitäten als Hauptzwecke an. Von den Befragten, die das Fliegen mit hybrid-elektrischen Flugzeugen nicht in Betracht ziehen würden, gaben 36 % Sicherheitsbeden- ken im Allgemeinen an, gefolgt von 18 %, die ein mangelndes Vertrauen in die Regulierungsbehörden angaben. 42 % der Befragten stimmen zu, dass sie über potenzielle Risiken des hybrid-elektrischen Antriebes besorgt sind. To introduce this new type of hybrid-electric aircraft to the market, it is of utmost importance to better understand public acceptance and the factors that might affect the public acceptance towards this new mobility product. An online survey collected a representative sample of more than 3000 German residents who travelled actively within Europe before the start of the COVID-19 pan- demic. The key results are that a large majority (74 %) of the respondents agree that they would consider flying with hybrid-electric aircraft. The majority (77 %) of the respondents who would consider flying with hybrid-electric aircraft envision private travel purposes such for leisure and social activities as main purposes. Among the respondents who would not consid- er flying with hybrid-electric aircraft, 36 % indicated safety con- cerns in general, followed by 18 % indicating a lack of trust in regulatory authorities. Regarding the areas of concern, 42 % of the respondents agree that they are concerned about the poten- tial risks of electric propulsion. Slightly less than one-third of the respondents agree that they are concerned about the negative climate impact of electricity and hydrogen production. Marktpotenzial von Fluggeräten für urbane und regionale Luftmobilität Der rasante technologische Fortschritt erlaubt die Entwicklung senkrechtstartender Fluggeräte, die es in Zukunft ermöglichen könnten, Luftmobilität in den urbanen Raum zu bringen. Die sogenannte Urban Air Mobility (UAM) umfasst dabei ein breites Spektrum an Anwendungsfällen, wie die Anbindung von Ver- kehrsflughäfen, aber auch innerstädtische und regionale Ver- kehre von bis zu 300 km. Um die Implikationen von UAM auf den Zuliefermarkt zu unter- suchen, wurde der globale Markt für UAM-Vehikel abgeschätzt. Die angenommenen Marktdurchdringungsraten variierten zwi- schen den drei oben erwähnten Anwendungsfällen, sechs Stadtarchetypen sowie drei Szenarien. Die Nachfrageentwick- lung wurde dann für den Zeitraum 2020 bis 2050 projiziert. Die Länge und die Gesamtzahl der Fahrten, die potenziell durch UAM-Fahrten ersetzt werden könnten, sowie ihre Verteilung über den Tag variieren je nach Anwendungsfall und Stadtarche- typ. Die Verwendung vorhandener Mobilitätsdaten ermöglicht es, die Nachfrageentwicklung quantitativ abzuschätzen und sie gegen Zahlen aus bestehenden Studien zu validieren. Die Berechnungen zeigen, dass je nach Szenario bis 2050 eine weltweite Nachfrage von bis zu 5,5 Mio. Fluggeräten denkbar ist. Allerdings zeigen die Ergebnisse auch, wie wichtig es ist, vor allem in diesem stark von Unsicherheiten geprägten Markt, szenariobasiert vorzugehen, da die Entwicklung von Umfeldfak- toren die Gesamtnachfrage stark beeinflussen kann. Market potential of air vehicles for urban and regional air mobility Rapid technological progress allows the development of vertical take-off and landing aircraft, which in the future could make it possible to bring air mobility to urban areas. Urban air mobility (UAM) covers a wide range of use cases, such as connecting commercial airports to city centres, but also inner- city and regional transport of up to 300 km. To assess the implications of UAM on the supplier market, the global market for UAM vehicles was estimated. The assumed market penetration rates of UAM differed for the three use cases mentioned above, six city archetypes, and three scena- rios. The global market was then projected for the timeframe 2020 to 2050. The length and total number of trips that could potentially be replaced by UAM and their distribution through- out the day vary by use case and city archetype. Using existing mobility data allows us to quantitatively estimate demand trends and validate them against figures from existing studies. The calculations show that, depending on the scenario, a global demand of up to 5.5 million UAM vehicles is possible by 2050. However, the results also show how important it is to take a scenario-based perspective on this market, which is strongly characterised by uncertainties, as the development of environ- mental factors can strongly influence overall demand. Virtuelle Erprobung von Drohnenflügen in U-Space- Szenarien U-Space – das neue EU-Regelwerk für Drohnen – sowie Fort- schritte bei Autopiloten führen zu einem wachsenden Markt für Drohnenanwendungen. Dienstleistungen wie Inspektionsflüge oder Warentransport sollen im industriellen und kommerziellen Umfeld automatisiert einsetzbar gemacht werden. Dafür ist es bereits jetzt erforderlich, die Einhaltung von Regularien über- prüfbar zu machen sowie das Vertrauen und die Akzeptanz der Technologie zu stärken. Um die Fähigkeiten und Konformität von Drohnen im Luftraum zu demonstrieren, können virtuelle Missionen in realistischen Simulationsumgebungen durchgeführt und so die Validierung und Entwicklung von Drohnen unterstützt werden. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt entwickelt im Rahmen des Forschungsprojektes ADACORSA solche Testszenarien und integriert sie in eine Simulationsumgebung für Drohnen. Die Testszenarien werden mit Blick auf U-Space-Regularien ausgelegt und vom Beobachter in der Simulation über den Browser gestartet. In einer Szenariobeschreibung werden neben der Testumgebung auch die Mission für die Drohne(n), entsprechende Lufträume und einzuhaltende U-Space-Anforde- rungen definiert. Zusätzlich können besondere Herausforderun- gen als unbekanntes Element in das Szenario eingebracht wer- den, auf die die Drohne während ihrer Mission reagieren können muss. This requires an imminent ability to make regulatory compliance verifiable as well as to increase trust and acceptance of the technology. To demonstrate capabilities and conformity of drones in very low-level airspace, virtual missions can be conducted in realistic simulation environments while also supporting validation and development of drones. Bauhaus Luftfahrt is developing such test scenarios as part of the ADACORSA research project and integrating them into a simulation environment for drones. The test scenarios are specifically designed to consider U-Space regulations in their missions and will be started via web brows- er. A scenario description defines the environment, the mission for the drone(s), and corresponding U-Space requirements like airspace restrictions and services. Additionally, a range of defined challenges will appear as unknown elements, which the drone must be able to overcome during its mission. Beyond the project, the simulation environment and drone scenarios will be made available to developers, regulators, and the public for testing and research purposes. Limited ranges of all-electric, vertical take-off vehicles, significantly higher transport costs compared to existing, alternative modes of transport, as well as the availability of vertiports with sufficient take-off and landing capacity remain key limiting factors for the market potential of urban air mobility for passengers. Without technological solutions, only a small share of trips can be replaced by urban air mobility, leading to no impact on the existing congestion problem in cities. Therefore, activities should focus more on use cases to improve connectivity of rural areas and the accessibility of airports. Im Geschäftsjahr 2021 sind die Erträge des Bauhaus Luftfahrt um -9,2 % auf 4,5 Mio. EUR gesunken. Die Zuwendungen des Freistaates Bayern sind aufgrund einer Zuwendungserhö- hung um +22,8 % angestiegen und liegen bei 1,7 Mio. EUR. Die Mitgliedsbeiträge haben sich um +50,0 TEUR erhöht auf- grund der Vollmitgliedschaft des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR). Die öffentlichen Drittmitteleinnahmen haben sich im Jahr 2021 um -93,8 TEUR (-8,2 %) auf 1,3 Mio. EUR verringert. Diese Einnahmen sind auf Arbeiten an 12 Forschungsprojekten zurückzuführen, die von der Europäischen Union, dem Bund oder dem Freistaat Bayern gefördert werden. Der Rückgang ist im Wesentlichen auf den Abschluss von zwei größeren EU- Projekten in den Jahren 2020 und 2021 sowie eines Bund- Projektes in 2021 zurückzuführen. Der Personalbestand ist im Jahr 2021 gegenüber dem Vorjahr etwas gesunken, einhergehend mit dem Rückgang der Umsätze. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt beschäftigte zum Jahresende 45 Mitarbeiter*innen, davon 33 Wissenschaftler*innen. 13 der wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter*innen weisen eine abgeschlos- sene Promotion auf. Der Anteil der Wissenschaftlerinnen am Bauhaus Luftfahrt betrug im Jahr 2021 29 %, der Frauenanteil am Bauhaus Luftfahrt insgesamt 40 %. Die Anzahl der Student*innen ist im Jahr 2021 im Verhältnis zum Vorjahr etwas gesunken, insgesamt aber im Vergleich zu den Vorjahren auf einem sehr hohen Niveau geblieben. Trotz der Pandemieauswirkungen waren 31 Student*innen und ein Stipendiat aus insgesamt 13 Nationen als wissenschaftliche Hilfskräfte, Praktikant*innen oder zur Erstellung ihrer Studien- und Abschlussarbeiten am Bauhaus Luftfahrt tätig. At the end of the year, Bauhaus Luftfahrt had 45 employees, 33 of whom were scientists, with 13 being post-doctoral researchers.
