6 7 D R O W E R O F Dear Aviation Enthusiasts T he aviation community has set ambitious targets, and all stake- holders are highly committed to drastically reducing the envi- ronmental footprint of aviation. However, the question remains: How can we achieve these targets? While it has been clear from the start that we may only achieve the goals by bringing together new technologies for more efficient aircraft, operations and a significant share of renewable energies, it has been hard to obtain a quantification of what needs to be available by when. The Bauhaus Luftfahrt team, in close cooperation with other researchers, has worked on a scenario tool, which allows the derivation of quantified scenarios towards net-zero CO2 impact of the air transport system. In order to perform such an assess- ment, models for the introduction and evolution of the fleet, insertion of new aircraft, as well as operational measures are needed, besides the ramp-up scenarios of renewable energy carriers, be it SAF or hydrogen. With that scenario tool at hand, we are now able to provide val- uable insights and decision support to decision-makers in poli- tics as well as the aviation industry, in order to support the right measures at the right time. The tool also clearly identifies short- comings if we do not manage to implement measures early enough in time, as the effects will only show with a reasonable propagation in the field. Besides an insight into this scenario tool, the yearbook provides you with a lot of new impulses and insights into possible options for enabling a sustainable air transport system. And this will not only be achieved through technological, but also through opera- tional measures. I wish you, dear reader, exciting insights into the complexity and options for a sustainable aviation of tomorrow. Liebe Luftfahrtbegeisterte Die Luftfahrtgemeinschaft hat sich ehrgeizige Ziele gesetzt, und alle Beteiligten sind sehr engagiert, den ökologischen Fußab- druck der Luftfahrt drastisch zu verringern. Doch die Frage bleibt: Wie können wir diese Ziele erreichen? Obwohl von Anfang an klar war, dass wir die Ziele nur durch die Kombination neuer Technologien für effizientere Flugzeuge und Betriebsabläufe sowie einen erheblichen Anteil an erneuerbaren Energien errei- chen können, war es schwierig, zu quantifizieren, was bis wann zur Verfügung stehen muss. Das Team des Bauhaus Luftfahrt hat in enger Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Forscher*innen an einem Szenario-Tool gearbeitet, das die Ableitung von quantifizierten Szenarien für eine Netto- CO2-Bilanz des Luftverkehrssystems ermöglicht. Für eine solche Bewertung werden Modelle für die Einführung und Entwicklung der Flotte, den Einsatz neuer Flugzeuge sowie betriebliche Maß- nahmen benötigt, außerdem Szenarien für den Ausbau erneuer- barer Energieträger, sei es SAF oder Wasserstoff. Mit diesem Szenario-Tool sind wir nun in der Lage, Entscheidungs- träger*innen in der Politik und in der Luftfahrtindustrie wertvolle Einblicke und Entscheidungshilfen zu geben, um die richtigen Maßnahmen zum richtigen Zeitpunkt zu unterstützen. Das Tool zeigt auch deutlich die Defizite auf, wenn es nicht gelingt, recht- zeitig Maßnahmen zu ergreifen, da sich die Auswirkungen erst bei einer angemessenen Ausbreitung in der Praxis zeigen werden. Neben dem Einblick in dieses Szenario-Tool bietet das Jahrbuch viele neue Impulse und Einblicke in mögliche Optionen, um ein nachhaltiges Luftverkehrssystem zu ermöglichen. Und dies nicht nur durch technologische, sondern auch durch betriebliche Maß- nahmen. The competence domain “Sustainable Development & Policies” explores this area of tension by evaluating the climate impact of different sustainable solutions. Further, policy analyses, supported by econo- metric studies, give recommendations for a rea- sonable regulative framework. Finally, scenario simulations reveal holistic and cost-efficient path- ways towards climate neutrality. Energy & Fuels The competence domain “Energy & Fuels” assesses various energy technologies and fuel pathways with respect to their potential contribu- tion to achieving the climate targets of the aviation industry. The individual supply and logistics chains are analysed from the production of the primary energy carrier to the use phase in the aircraft. Important competences include the quantification of production potentials, techno-economic and life- cycle assessment, as well as the analysis of future energy options for aviation. Dazu werden die jeweiligen Bereitstellungs- ketten von der primären Energieerzeugung bis zu deren Nutzung im Fluggerät untersucht. Wich- tige Kompetenzen sind die Quantifi zierung der jeweiligen Produktionspotenziale, die Kosten- und Lebenszyklusanalyse sowie die Technolo- gieanalyse zukünftiger Energieoptionen für den Luftverkehr. I N O T A N A L P X E Network, Fleet, & Operations This competence domain applies methods of operations research such as modelling, simula- tion, and optimisation of intermodal travel chains, airline networks, as well as aircraft utilisation and fleet planning. The aim is to better anticipate new air vehicle market segments interacting with ground transportation modes, possible operation- al efficiency improvements, as well as future air vehicle design and technology requirements. Technology Radar The early detection of disruptive technologies and their ultimate physical performance capability is the key to long- term, sustainable innovations in aviation. The Technology Radar of Bauhaus Luftfahrt acts as an antenna for step-change technological advancements and radically new develop- ments in the domains of energy, materials, photonics, sen- sors, and information. In order to quantitatively analyse and assess future technologies, a specially developed method- ology based on scientific principles is used. As guidance to the future development of sound overall concepts, perfor- mance potentials are determined in the aeronautical con- text at various levels of complexity. Das gesamte Bauhaus-Luftfahrt- Team trägt dazu bei, in einem breiten Technologiespektrum Fort- schritt aus Forschung und früher Entwicklung zu detektieren, initial im Luftfahrtkontext zu bewerten und zu priorisieren. Für Schlüsselentwicklungen werden mittels erprobter Analyse- methoden zukunftssichere, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse über langfristige Potenziale generiert, als Leitfaden für fundierte Ent- scheidungen und integrierte Gesamtkonzepte. Hohe Priorität liegt auf dem Technologiefortschritt in Richtung einer klimaneutralen Luftfahrt mittels erneuerbarer Energien und Effizienzsteigerung. Ebenso zählen dazu aufkommende Technologien für die skalierbare, effiziente Bereitstellung von Flüssigwasserstoff (LH2) oder drop-in-fähigen synthetischen Kraftstoffen – und für letztere Direct Air Capture als Schlüssel- technologie. Materialentwicklungen als „Radarsignale“ mit hoher Relevanz für performante Energiespeicher, -wandler, Wärmetauscher sowie Leichtbauwerkstoffe und -strukturen teils mit neuer integrierter Funktionalität basieren oft auf Nano- technologie oder additiver Fertigung. Ferner sind bioinspirierte Technologien wie neuromorphe Sen- soren und Prozessoren auf dem Radar, die für die digitale Transformation und den Wandel hin zu situationsbewussten, intelligenten und adaptiven Systemen zentral sind. Technologies on the radar: Signals for innovation potentials T he Bauhaus Luftfahrt Technology Radar acts as an antenna for weak signals of possibly significant innovation potentials for aviation. The entire Bauhaus Luftfahrt team contributes to the detection of progress from research and early development in a broad technology spectrum and its initial assessment and pri- oritisation in the aviation context. For key developments, proven analytical methods are used to generate future-proof, scientific findings on long-term potentials as a guideline for informed decisions and integrated overall concepts. High priority is given to technological advances in the direction of climate-neutral aviation by means of renewable energies and increased efficiency. On the radar are, for instance, developments towards high-performance hydrogen fuel cells with an innova- tive cooling system. Further included are emerging technologies for the scalable, efficient supply of liquid hydrogen (LH2) or drop-in synthetic fuels – and for the latter, direct air capture as a key technology. Material developments as “radar signals” with high relevance for high-performance energy storage and con- verters, heat exchangers, as well as lightweight materials and structures, partly with new integrated functionality, are often based on nanotechnology or additive manufacturing. Furthermore, bio-inspired technologies such as neuromorphic sensors and processors are on the radar, which are central to the digital transformation and the shift towards situation-aware, intelligent, and adaptive systems. Detected advances in direct air capture, hydrogen, and neuro- morphic technologies have shown significant potential for future fuels and autonomous flight in detailed analyses – as a guide for integrated system studies (see following articles).

22 23 R A D A R Y G O L O N H C E T Zukunftstechnologiepotenziale für Grünen Wasserstoff Die vorteilhafte Nutzung von Grünem Wasserstoff (H2) in seiner flüssigen Form (LH2) als Energieträger in der Luftfahrt erfordert radikalen Technologiefortschritt entlang der gesamten Kette von Produktion über Verflüssigung bis hin zur Bereitstellung und Speicherung in Kryotanks. Technologiehebel etwa in Bezug auf Performanz, Energiebedarf und Skalierbarkeit frühzeitig zu erken- nen, ist eine wesentliche Voraussetzung für eine fundierte Poten- zialbewertung. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt hat aufkommende Technologieoptionen entlang des (L)H2-Lebenszyklus identifiziert, vergleichend eva- luiert und Perspektiven zur Steigerung des Gesamtwirkungs- grades abgeleitet. Der direkte Energiebedarf wird dominiert von der Herstellung, gefolgt von der Verflüssigung, für die sich wesentliches Verbesserungspotenzial zeigt. Der zukünftige Ein- satz gemischter Kältemittel sowie die Erhöhung der Anlagen- kapazität sind wichtige Hebel für Gasverdichtungsverfahren, die bereits im industriellen Maßstab eingesetzt werden. Im Labor- maßstab ist eine komplementäre Technologie vielversprechend. Sie beruht auf dem Prinzip der magnetischen Kühlung und setzt ein starkes Magnetfeld sowie feste Kältemittel ein. Es ergeben sich ähnliche Effizienzpotenziale wie für konventionelle Ansätze, jedoch bei kleinerer Anlagenkapazität (Abbildung auf Seite 23) und platzsparender umsetzbar – ohne große Kompressoren. Dies eröffnet Anwendungsperspektiven in Flughafennähe zur effizi- enten Verflüssigung kleinerer Mengen oder von Boil-off-Gas. Zudem zeigt der Vergleich verschiedener Wasserstoff-Speicher- konzepte erhebliche Gewichtsvorteile für angeblich leckdicht getestete, Graphitfaser-basierte Komposit-Kryotanks (Abbildung auf Seite 23). Diese Erkenntnisse werden integriert in holistische Betrachtun- gen zur zukünftigen Rolle von Wasserstoff in der Transformation hin zu einer nachhaltigen Luftfahrt. Future technology potentials for green hydrogen T he beneficial use of green hydrogen (H2) in its liquid form (LH2) as an energy carrier in aviation requires radical techno- logical progress along the entire chain from production and lique- faction to supply and storage in cryotanks. Early detection of technology levers, for example in terms of performance, energy demand, and scalability, is an essential prerequisite for a well- founded potential assessment. Bauhaus Luftfahrt has identified emerging technology options along the (L)H2 life cycle, evaluated them comparatively, and derived perspectives for increasing the overall efficiency. Direct energy demand is dominated by production, followed by lique- faction, for which perspectives for significant efficiency gains emerge. The future use of mixed refrigerants and the increase in plant capacity are important levers for compressed-gas refrigeration methods that are already in deployment on an industrial scale. On a laboratory scale, a complementary tech- nology to hydrogen liquefaction is proving promising. It is based on the principle of magnetic cooling and uses a strong magnetic field and solid instead of gaseous refrigerants. Similar efficiency as for conventional approaches could be realised at significantly lower plant capacity (figure on page 23) and land use, since large compressors are not required. This opens up application perspectives for space-restricted airports for the efficient lique- faction of smaller quantities or reliquefaction of boil-off gas. In addition, the comparison of different hydrogen storage concepts shows considerable weight advantages for graphite fibre-based composite cryotanks that allegedly tested leak- tight (figure on page 23). These findings are integrated into holistic considerations of the future role of hydrogen in the transformation towards sustain- able aviation.

2 4 2 5 R A D A R Y G O L O N H C E T Perspektiven von Direct Air Capture für skalierbare Kraftstoffpfade Eine wesentliche Option zur Dekarbonisierung der Luftfahrt ist der Einsatz synthetischer Kraftstoffe, die in Sunlight- oder Power- to-Liquid-Prozessen hergestellt werden. Direct-Air-Capture(DAC)- Technologien ermöglichen, CO2 aus der Umgebungsluft abzu- scheiden und als ergiebige und nachhaltige Kohlenstoffquelle für die Kraftstoffproduktion zu nutzen. Um dies wirtschaftlich tragbar umzusetzen, bedarf es einfach skalierbarer und energie- optimierter Lösungen. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt untersucht Zukunftsperspektiven eines wachsenden Spektrums von DAC-Technologien, die im Labor- maßstab bis hin zu ersten Pilotanlagen erprobt werden. Ansätze unterscheiden sich in der Wahl des Sorptionsmittels (flüssig oder fest) und der Form der CO2-Bindung sowie der benötigten Energie zur anschließenden Freisetzung (Abbildung auf Seite 25, meist unter Wärmezufuhr bei variierenden Temperaturniveaus). Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt hat technologiespezifische Hebel aufge- zeigt, um den thermischen und / oder elektrischen Energiebedarf maßgeblich zu senken sowie die Produktivität zu optimieren. Es wurde etwa das Potenzial für Wärmeintegration mit dem exo- thermen Kraftstoffherstellungsprozess als grundlegender Vor teil von Niedertemperaturansätzen quantifiziert. Zudem umfassen identifizierte material- und prozessseitige Stellschrauben z. B. die CO2-Adsorptionskinetik, die Selektivität sowie den Wärmetrans- fer. Perspektiven für geringeren Energiebedarf eröffnen auch neuere elektrochemische Ansätze, die keine thermische, son- dern nur elektrische Energie benötigen. Als Kernergebnis resultiert daraus, dass aufgezeigte Technolo- gieoptionen die Effizienz einer DAC-basierten Kraftstoffproduk- tion signifikant verbessern könnten. Diese Erkenntnisse fließen in integrierte, techno-ökonomische Potenzialstudien und Öko- bilanz-Betrachtungen ein, um Entscheidungen bezüglich nach- haltiger Kraftstoffstrategien zu unterstützen. Perspectives of direct air capture for scalable fuel pathways A key option for decarbonising aviation is the use of synthetic fuels produced in Sunlight- or Power-to-Liquid processes. Direct air capture (DAC) technologies enable CO2 to be captured from the ambient air and used as an abundant and sustain able source of carbon for fuel production. For economically viable implementation, easily scalable and energy-optimised solutions are required. Bauhaus Luftfahrt investigates future perspectives of a growing range of DAC technologies, which are being tested on a labo- ratory scale up to the first pilot plants. Approaches differ in the choice of sorbent (liquid or solid) and the form of CO2 binding as well as the energy required for the subsequent release (figure on page 25, mostly under heat supply at varying tem perature levels). Bauhaus Luftfahrt has identified technology- specific levers to significantly reduce thermal and / or electrical energy requirements and to optimise productivity. For example, the potential for heat integration with the exothermic fuel manu- facturing process has been quantified as an inherent benefit of low temperature approaches. In addition, identified material- and process-related main parameters include e.g. CO2 adsorption kinetics, selectivity, and heat transfer. Newer electrochemical approaches, which do not require thermal but only electrical energy, also open up perspectives for lower energy require- ments. The core result is that the technology options identified could significantly improve the efficiency of DAC-based fuel production. These findings flow into integrated, techno-economic potential studies and life-cycle assessments to support decisions regard- ing sustainable fuel strategies.

26 27 R A D A R Y G O L O N H C E T Schlüsseltechnologien für Edge AI auf dem Weg zum autonomen Flug Autonome Systeme verarbeiten Sensordaten mittels Verfahren der Künstlichen Intelligenz (Artificial Intelligence, AI), um auch in komplexen Situationen adäquat zu agieren. Als Grundvorausset- zung, etwa für den sicheren Betrieb unbemannter Drohnen oder Flugtaxis in urbanen Gegenden, müssen Daten – meist mehrerer komplementärer Sensoren – mit geringer Latenz ressourcen- schonend erfasst, verarbeitet und zur Navigation genutzt werden. Die sehr großen Datenmengen, darunter Bilder hochauflösen- der Kameras, in Echtzeit und zudem höchst präzise und effizient an Bord auszuwerten, stellt noch eine Herausforderung dar. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt hat aufkommende Technologielösungen mit hohem Potenzial für eine Reihe von Edge-AI-Anwendungen analysiert. Insbesondere bioinspirierte, synergetisch nutzbare Ansätze für Datenerfassung und -verarbeitung zeigen eine um Größenordnungen kleinere Latenz und einen geringeren Ener- giebedarf als die herkömmliche Technologie oft bei vergleich- barer Performanz. Dazu zählen eventbasierte Sensoren, die im Vergleich zu Standardkameras deutlich weniger, jedoch rele- vantere Daten zur Interpretation dynamischer Szenen liefern (Abbildung auf Seite 27). Sie spielen ihre Vorteile besonders bei schlechten Lichtverhältnissen und hohen Geschwindigkeiten aus. Zudem ermöglicht dem Gehirn in Architektur und Dynamik nachempfundenes neuromorphes Computing, einen zeit- und energieaufwendigen Datentransfer zwischen Prozessor und Speicher zu vermeiden. Erste neuromorphe Chips basieren auf digitalen bzw. analogen elektronischen Schaltungen. Das junge Feld der neuromorphen Photonik könnte langfristig die Rechen- leistung und Effizienz noch deutlich steigern. Der inhärente Vor- zug einer hohen Bandbreite und verlustarmen Leitung in photo- nisch integrierten Schaltkreisen zeigt sich bereits für Ansätze, die Licht für Berechnungen in maschinellen Lernverfahren nut- zen (Abbildung auf Seite 27). Photonic processors show potential for efficient data processing in real time, for example for Edge AI applications. Photonische Prozessoren zeigen Potenzial für effizi- ente Datenverar beitung in Echtzeit, etwa für Edge-AI- Anwendungen. Key technologies for Edge AI on the way to auto- nomous flight Autonomous systems process sensor data using methods of artificial intelligence (AI) in order to act adequately even in complex situations. As a basic requirement such as for the safe operation of unmanned drones or air taxis in urban areas and at elevated velocities, data – typically from several comple- mentary sensors – must be detected, processed, and used for navigation with low latency and energy consumption. On-board processing of the very large amounts of data, including images from high-resolution cameras, in real time, and simultaneously with high accuracy and energy efficiency, still poses a challenge. Bauhaus Luftfahrt analysed emerging technology solutions with high potential for a range of Edge AI applications. In particular, bio-inspired, synergistically usable approaches of data acquisi- tion and processing show up to several orders of magnitude lower latency and energy demand than conventional technology, often with comparable performance. These include event-based vision sensors that provide significantly less but more relevant data for the interpretation of dynamic scenes (figure on page 27). They show their advantages particularly in poor light conditions and at high speeds. In addition, neuromorphic computing, which is modelled after the brain in terms of architecture and dynamics, allows to avoid time- and energy-consuming data transfer be tween the processor and memory. The first neuromorphic chips are based on digital or analogue electronic circuits. In the long term, the young field of neuromorphic photonics could sig- nificantly increase computing power and efficiency. The inherent benefit of high bandwidth and low propagation losses in pho- tonic integrated circuits is already evident for approaches that use light for calculations in machine-learning processes (figure on page 27).

Enabling an early and comprehensive detection mechanism and subsequent assessment provides insights for the aviation community and beyond regarding emerging and long-term developments, including the future of passenger travel, potential business applications, partnerships, or strategic conse- quences. 32 33 I R O T N O M D N E R T Treiber des Wandels: Trendmonitor­Einblicke 2022 Im Rahmen des Bauhaus-Luftfahrt-Trendmonitors werden gesell- schaftliche, technologiegetriebene, ökonomische, ökologische und politische Entwicklungen erfasst, analysiert und bewertet. Ziel ist es, Trends frühzeitig abzubilden, Entwicklungen zu anti- zipieren und erste Potenzialeinschätzungen abzugeben sowie mögliche Auswirkungen, Marktimplikationen und Forschungs- bedarfe abzuleiten. Der Trendmonitor nutzt zukunftsorientierte Methoden, Szenarioansätze und Datenanalysen. Die Trenddaten- bank wird regelmäßig durch Input aus verschiedenen Quellen aktualisiert. Interne und externe Expert*innen bewerten dann ausgewählte Trends. Während 2021 die COVID-19-Pandemie und ihre Auswirkungen die Diskussionen dominierten, war 2022 die Tech-Industrie ein Haupttreiber: Trends wie das Metaverse und Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) tauchten am Horizont auf. Die langfristigen Effekte auf die Luftfahrt sind noch offen und bedürfen weiterer For- schung. Andererseits sind Hyperkonnektivität, das Internet der Dinge und neue Arbeitsformen, insbesondere die Telearbeit, bereits heute zu beobachten und zeigen, dass sich unser tägli- ches Leben zunehmend in digitale Räume verlagert. Wie sich diese Trends umsetzen – während der Fokus gleichzeitig auf der Dekarbonisierung und anderen dringenden Nachhaltigkeitszielen liegt –, als auch wie der Luftfahrtsektor auf diese dynamischen Entwicklungen reagieren wird, sind weiterhin offene Fragen. Wir sehen aber, dass Reisende und deren Akzeptanz techni- scher und operationeller Lösungen eine Schlüsselrolle spielen. Im Rahmen des Trendmonitors 2022 wurde dazu die mögliche Rolle von diesen beim Übergang zu einem nachhaltigeren Flugverkehr untersucht, und die Ergebnisse finden sich im Bauhaus Luftfahrt Trend Report 2022. The Trend Monitor relies on a toolbox of future-oriented methods, scenario thinking, and data analytics. The trend database is updated regularly with inputs from various sources. Internal and external experts then assess the shortlisted trends. Whereas in 2021 the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts were dominating the trend discussions, the tech industry was a main driver of change in 2022: Trends such as the Metaverse and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) emerged on the horizon. The long- term impacts on the future of aviation are still open and require more research. On the other hand, hyper-connectivity, the Internet of Things (IoT), and new work, especially remote work- ing, are already observable today, showing that our daily lives shift increasingly into digital spaces. The question remains how the aviation industry will react towards these dynamic develop- ments and how to make use of these trends while at the same time focusing on decarbonisation and other urgent sustainabili- ty goals. It is already clear that passengers and their accept- ance of technical and operational solutions will play a key role for this mission. Hence, dedicated studies were conducted within the Trend Monitor last year, and details on air passengers and their possible role in the transition towards more sustain- able air travel can be found in the Bauhaus Luftfahrt Trend Report 2022.

34 35 I R O T N O M D N E R T Bewertung der Mobilitätsforschung in Europa anhand KI­gestützter Modelle Arbeiten wir an den richtigen Forschungsthemen, um die lang- fristigen europäischen Ziele für die Luftfahrt und die Mobilität zu erreichen? Diese Frage stand im Fokus des EU-H2020-Projektes CAMERA (Coordination and support Action for Mobility in Europe: Research and Assessment), koordiniert von Innaxis. Das Kon- sortium nutzte Künstliche-Intelligenz(KI)-Ansätze und entwickelte ein Modell, um datengestützte Erkenntnisse für politische Ent- scheidungsträger*innen zu gewinnen [1]. Der CAMERA-Ansatz beinhaltet Natural-Language-Processing- Techniken, die für das Clustern von Themen sowie Informations- extraktion verwendet wurden. Das Modell wurde zur Analyse von Textdaten aus über 40.000 H2020- und FP7-finanzierten For- schungsprojekten aus der CORDIS-Datenbank eingesetzt [2]. Daraus wurden 926 Projekte als mobilitätsrelevant identifiziert und in neun Forschungsthemen gruppiert (Abbildung auf Seite 35). Ergebnisse der Analyse beinhalten Fördersummen pro For- schungsprogramm, die Anzahl der Projekte pro Cluster, die geo- grafische und institutionelle Verteilung und andere Aspekte. Diese deskriptiven Ergebnisse wurden mit Indikatoren, die die europäischen Mobilitätsziele repräsentieren, verglichen, um so Forschungslücken und -bedarfe sowie mögliche zusätzliche Investitionen und Maßnahmen zu identifizieren. Insgesamt hilft dieser digitale, KI-gestützte Ansatz dabei, Mobili- tätsforschungsinitiativen auf automatisierte und datengesteuerte Weise aus der Vogelperspektive zu verstehen. In der heutigen Welt der Informationsüberflutung kann sie die kognitive Be lastung der menschlichen Analyst*innen verringern und die Entschei- dungsfindung unterstützen. This was the main objective in the H2020-funded project CAMERA (Coordination and support Action for Mobility in Europe: Research and Assessment), coor- dinated by Innaxis. In this regard, the consortium relied on artificial intelligence (AI) and developed a prototype model to generate data- driven insights for policy- and decision-makers [1]. CAMERA’s approach utilised common Natural Language Pro- cessing techniques used for topic modelling and information retrieval. After the development and verification of the model, this digital assistant was applied to analyse textual data of over 40,000 H2020- and FP7-funded research projects taken from the CORDIS database [2]. As a result, 926 projects covering nine research topics were identified as mobility-relevant (figure on page 35). The model uncovered the funding amounts under each programme, the total number of projects that predominantly deal with these topics, the geographical and institutional distribution, and much more. These descriptive results were matched with key performance indicators and areas (KPIs and KPAs), which proxied European mobility goals, to derive where research is on the right track and where additional investments and actions are still needed. Overall, this digital AI-powered assistance helps to understand mobility research initiatives in an automated and data-driven way from a bird’s eye view. In today’s world of information over- load, it can ease the cognitive load of human analysts and support decision-making. CAMERA’s results are available open- access as a data dashboard that allows everyone to visually inspect the model results and the database [3].

Which emission mitigation options show the best performance in terms of reduction poten- tial, costs, and entry into service? How can synergies between different mitigation options be maximised? And finally, how do changing ticket prices and an increasing environmental aware- ness among passengers affect the future demand trends in air travel? In light of such complex dynamics, scenario simulations are among the preferred methods to better understand the underlying mechanisms and to clearly show implications of dif- ferent scenario outcomes. 44 45 I I Y T L A R T U E N E T A M L C O T N O T S N A R T I I Eine holistische Analyse der Pfade für eine CO2­neutrale Luftfahrt Vor dem Hintergrund des Pariser Klimaabkommens und der bereits heute sichtbaren Klimaveränderungen muss die Luftfahrt ihre Klimawirkung in den nächsten Jahrzehnten deutlich redu- zieren. Somit wird die nachhaltige Transformation der Luftfahrt zunehmend zu einem festen Bestandteil von Unternehmens- strategien und regulatorischen Programmen. Allerdings ist bis- her unklar, mit welchen technologischen und regulativen Optio- nen die Klimaneutralität am besten erreicht werden kann. Dies ist aufgrund der großen Unsicherheiten und vielfältigen techno- logischen Optionen schwierig zu erfassen. Hier bieten sich Sze- nariosimulationen an, um eine Vielzahl an Entwicklungen zu vergleichen. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt hat eine Simulationsumgebung zur Dar- stellung der nachhaltigen Transition der Luftfahrt entwickelt und auf der ILA Berlin 2022 vorgestellt. Hiermit ist es möglich, Annah- men bezüglich Flugzeugtechnologien, nachhaltiger Flugkraftstoffe (SAFs), operationeller Verbesserungen sowie Wasserstoff fest- zulegen. So ist es möglich, durch die Zusammenstellung der verschiedenen Forschungen des Bauhaus Luftfahrt besonders aussagekräftige Szenarien zu erstellen. So zeigt sich, dass ein Fokus auf kontinuierliche Effizienzsteige- rungen zwar einen erheblichen Beitrag zur langfristigen Reduzie- rung von CO2-Emissionen leisten kann, aber dennoch erhebliche Mengen an SAFs notwendig sein werden (Abbildung auf Seite 45). Zudem lässt sich zeigen, dass nur SAFs mit niedrigem CO2-Fuß- abdruck die Restemissionen der Luftfahrt langfristig niedrig halten (Abbildung auf Seite 45). Solche Einblicke in mögliche Entwick- lungspfade sind besonders wertvoll für die Abwägung von Ent- scheidungen in Industrie und Politik und unterstützen fundierte Diskussionen für eine abgestimmte Multistakeholder-Strategie. For the urgent need to decarbonise, there are many transition scenari- os possible. Für die dringende Not- wendigkeit der Dekar- bonisierung gibt es viele mögliche Transitions- szenarien. A holistic analysis of CO2 neutrality path- ways for aviation In the context of the Paris Climate Agreement and the climate changes already visible today, aviation must significantly reduce its climate impact in the coming decades. Thus, the sustainable transformation of aviation is increasingly becoming an integral part of corporate strategies and regulatory programmes. How- ever, it is still unclear with which technological and regulatory options this goal can be best achieved. This is difficult to answer right now due to the great uncertainties and diverse technolog- ical options at hand. This is where scenario simulations come into play to capture and compare a multitude of developments. Bauhaus Luftfahrt has developed a scenario tool to illustrate the sustainable transition of aviation and presented it at ILA Berlin 2022. The scenario tool makes it possible to define assumptions regarding aircraft technologies, sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), operational improvements, and hydrogen. From these, individu- al assumptions can be combined into specific scenarios. For example, it can be seen (figure on page 45) that while a focus on continuous efficiency improvements can make a signifi- cant contribution to the long-term reduction of CO2 emissions, significant amounts of SAFs will still be required. Moreover, it can be shown that only SAFs with a low carbon footprint will keep aviation’s residual emissions low in the long term (figure on page 45). Such insights into possible development paths are particularly valuable for weighing up decisions in industry and politics and support informed discussions on a coordinated multi- stakeholder strategy.

Die Themen Multimodalität, Reiseerlebnis oder ein nahtloses Mobilitätssystem, das die Ziele des Pariser Klimaabkommens erfüllt, sind enorm wichtig für die Gestaltung des zukünftigen europäischen Verkehrssystems. Das Modus-Projekt identifizierte und bewertete (zukünftige) Treiber der Passagiernachfrage sowie das Angebot an Luft-Schiene-Mobilität und deren entsprechende Auswirkungen auf die Wahl der Verkehrsträger. Diese Analysen wurden für verschiedene zukünftige Mobilitätsszenarien durch- geführt, wie die Erholung des Marktes auf Vor-Corona-Niveau, die signifikante Verlagerung des Kurzstreckenluftverkehrs auf die Schiene sowie ein hohes Verkehrswachstum, ermöglicht durch neue Technologien. Im Rahmen verschiedener Simulationen wurden die Auswir- kungen auf das Mobilitätssystem betrachtet, insbesondere in Be zug auf Tür-zu-Tür-Reisezeiten, durchschnittliche Wartezeiten auf (Anschluss-)Flüge, Flugverspätungen oder Gate-zu-Gate- CO2-Emissionen. Ein Ersatz von Kurzstreckenflügen bis 500 km auf Strecken mit verfügbaren Hochgeschwindigkeitszügen kann zu einer potenziellen Verkehrsverlagerung von 2 % bis 3 % der zu erwarteten Luftverkehrsnachfrage im Jahr 2040 führen. Die Simulationsergebnisse zeigen zudem, dass auf Netzwerkebene Flugverspätungen zwischen 10 % und 23 % reduziert und die Tür- zu-Tür-Reisezeiten bis zu 8 % verringert werden können. Dieser Ansatz und die entsprechenden Erkenntnisse tragen zu einem besseren Verständnis der Anforderungen multimodaler Reisender, der Wahl der Verkehrsträger Luft und Schiene und der Weiterentwicklung und Umsetzung von Modellen zur bes- seren Darstellung von Reiseketten bei. T he topics of multimodality, passenger experience, or creat- ing a seamless mobility system within Europe that meets the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement are high on the agen- da of shaping the future European transport system. The Modus project identified and assessed (future) drivers for passenger demand and supply of joint air-rail mobility in terms of their impact on passenger modal choice – across different future mobility sce- narios, including a pre-pandemic recovery, a significant short-haul shift from air to rail, and traffic growth with strong technological support. In order to assess the multimodal performance across these scenarios, a number of experiments have been designed to evaluate the impact on key (multimodal) performance indica- tors, including door-to-door (D2D) travel times, average flight waiting times, flight delays, or gate-to-gate CO2 emissions. Assuming a shift from air to rail on connections below 500 km, and only for city pairs with available high-speed rail links, the analysis in Modus reveals a potential shift between 2 % and 3 % of the expected air demand in 2040. On the air transport net- work level, the Modus modelling approach reveals a potential reduction in flight delays, ranging from 10 % in the short-haul scenario up to 23 % in the highest traffic growth scenario, or a reduction in network D2D travel times by up to 8 %. This approach and the respective insights help gain a better understanding of multimodal traveller requirements, air-rail modal choice, and advancing and implementing models to bet- ter depict passengers’ D2D journeys; to be used by policy mak- ers or transport providers to assess impacts on capacities, pre- dictability, and the environment, across scenarios and for multi- modal journeys.

Which technical production path- ways are available for a long-term supply of renewable fuels? How do these pathways perform with respect to technical, environmental, and socioeconomic criteria? And what are suitable measures to introduce the required volumes of sus- tainable jet fuel into the market? Fuel options with promising long-term potentials, like advanced biofuels from residues and waste streams or synthetic fuels from solar and wind energy, represent important research topics in this context. Der Forschungsbereich „Future Aviation Fuels“ konzentriert sich auf folgende Fragestellungen: In welchen Mengen kön- nen erneuerbare Kraftstoffe in Zukunft produziert werden? Welche technischen Produktionspfade stehen für eine lang- fristige Versorgung zur Verfügung? Wie sind diese Pfade im Hinblick auf ihre technischen, ökologischen und sozioöko- nomischen Potenziale zu bewerten? Und wie lassen sich die benötigten Mengen nachhaltiger Kraftstoffe in den Markt einführen? Langfristig tragfähige Optionen wie die Produk- tion fortgeschrittener Biokraftstoffe aus Abfall- und Reststof- fen oder die Kraftstoffsynthese mittels Sonnen- und Wind- energie stellen hierzu wichtige Forschungsansätze dar.

54 55 I I S L E U F N O T A V A E R U T U F Nachhaltige Biokerosinproduktion durch Kopplung mit PtL­Verfahren Bei der Herstellung synthetischer Kraftstoffe über das Power-to- Liquid(PtL)-Verfahren stellt sich die Frage nach der Kohlenstoff- verfügbarkeit in den benötigten Mengen; perspektivisch soll diese durch die Abscheidung von CO2 aus der Umgebungsluft gesichert werden. Andererseits erfordert die Herstellung bioge- ner Kerosine erhebliche Mengen an Wasserstoff, je nach Her- stellungsverfahren entsteht zudem CO2 als Nebenprodukt. Eine einfache Kopplungsmöglichkeit ist die Substitution von konven- tionellem Wasserstoff, der für Aufbereitungsprozesse in Bioraf- finerien benötigt wird, durch nachhaltig erzeugten Wasserstoff. Tiefgreifendere Synergien ergeben sich für Produktionsverfah- ren, in denen erneuerbare Wärme, der bei der Elektrolyse freige- setzte Sauerstoff oder bei der Biomassekonversion anfallende Kohlenstoffströme für die Kerosinproduktion genutzt werden. Ein typisches Beispiel sind sogenannte PBtL-Prozesse, bei denen die Elektrolyseprodukte H2 und O2 genutzt werden, um Biomassevergasungsverfahren (BtL) effizienter zu gestalten. Am Bauhaus Luftfahrt wird das Integrationspotenzial einer hydro- thermalen Verflüssigung (HTL) von Biomasse mit einem PtL- Verfahren untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich die Kohlenstoffbilanz des HTL- Prozesses erheblich verbessert, da anfallende CO2-Ströme über den PtL-Prozess genutzt werden und sich dadurch die Produkt- ausbeute erhöht. Abhängig von den Kosten für den eingesetzten erneuerbaren Strom können die Kraftstoffproduktionskosten allerdings deutlich ansteigen. Die Kopplung von fortgeschritte- nen Biomassekonversionsverfahren mit Grünem H2 eignet sich also besonders für Standorte, die sowohl eine hohe Biomasse- verfügbarkeit als auch gute Bedingungen für die erneuerbare Stromproduktion aufweisen. The sustainability of bio kerosenes can be significantly improved through integration with PtX concepts. Die Nachhaltigkeit von Bio kerosinen lässt sich durch die Integration mit PtX-Konzepten deutlich verbessern. Sustainable bio- kerosene production via coupling with PtL T he production of synthetic fuels via the Power-to-Liquid (PtL) process raises the question of carbon availability in the required quantities; this should potentially be ensured by captur- ing CO2 from ambient air. On the other hand, the production of biogenic kerosene requires significant amounts of hydrogen. Depending on the biofuel production process, CO2 is also pro- duced as a by-product. A simple coupling option is the substitu- tion of conventional hydrogen, which is required for treatment processes in biorefineries, with sustainably produced hydrogen. More profound synergies arise for production processes in which renewable heat, the oxygen released during electrolysis, or carbon streams resulting from biomass conversion are used for kerosene production. A typical example are so-called PBtL processes, in which the elec- trolysis products hydrogen and oxygen are used to make biomass gasification processes (BtL = Biomass-to-Liquid) more efficient. At Bauhaus Luftfahrt, the integration potential of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of biomass with a PtL process is being inves- tigated. The results show that the carbon balance of the HTL process is significantly improved, as evolving CO2 streams are utilised via the PtL process, thereby increasing the product yield per unit of biomass. However, depending on the cost of renewable electric- ity used, fuel production costs may increase significantly. Thus, coupling advanced biomass conversion processes with green H2 is particularly suitable for sites that have both high biomass avail- ability and good conditions for renewable electricity production.

Hydrogen Aviation 56 57 2 2 0 2 H C U B R H A J · 2 2 0 2 K O O B R A E Y A holistic assessment of hydrogen as an aviation fuel is a central aim of Bauhaus Luftfahrt’s research activities. In this context, production processes and logistic chains are ana- lysed in order to gauge their scalability and their ecological and economic performance. These assessments extend to the required hydrogen-handling infrastructure and related adaptions of airport procedures. Further, key enabling com- ponent technologies for hydrogen-powered energy and propulsion systems are conceptually investigated. Aircraft- integrated analysis sheds light on synergies. All learnings contribute to a refined understanding of the potential role of hydrogen with regard to aviation’s long-term target of cli- mate neutrality. Die ganzheitliche Bewertung von Wasserstoff als Luftfahrt- kraftstoff ist ein zentrales Ziel der Forschungsaktivitäten des Bauhaus Luftfahrt. 58 59 I I N O T A V A N E G O R D Y H Modellbasierte Betrachtungen von Wasserstoff­ infrastruktur am Flughafen Da sich die Eigenschaften von Flüssigwasserstoff (LH2) dras- tisch von jenen des Kerosins unterscheiden, sind radikale Ent- wicklungen nötig, um den Einsatz von Grünem LH2 als Energie- träger in der Luftfahrt zu ermöglichen. Wie in der Abbildung auf Seite 59 dargestellt, ist es für ein fundiertes Verständnis des Potenzials dabei essenziell, das Thema Wasserstofffliegen ganz- heitlich zu betrachten. Im Kontext einer breiteren Systemwende hin zur Wasserstoffwirtschaft sind dabei ökologische und ökono- mische Kriterien sowie Entwicklungs- und Skalierungsbedarfe von Produktions-, Bereitstellungs- und Flugzeugtechnologien zu bewerten. Ein besonders herausforderndes Beispiel stellt in diesem Kon- text die Flughafeninfrastruktur dar: Lagerungs- [1], Distributions- sowie Betankungstechnologien müssen für kryogenen LH2 bei Temperaturen von − 253 °C ausgelegt werden. Zudem gilt es, die Verluste durch Verdampfung so gering wie möglich zu hal- ten. Konflikte mit operationellen Abläufen sind zu vermeiden; die Infrastruktur ist den Nachfragemustern anzupassen (Abbil- dung auf Seite 59). Um trotz der geringen Technologiereife He - rausforderungen frühzeitig zu verstehen und Lösungsansätze entwickeln zu können, werden am Bauhaus Luftfahrt modell- basierte Flughafeninfrastrukturstudien für verschiedene Anwen- dungsfälle durchgeführt. Beispielsweise konzentrieren sich die Arbeiten im multilateralen LuFo-Projekt 328H2-FC auf die zeit- nahe Einführung eines LH2-Regionalfliegers, während sich stu- dentische Arbeiten mit längerfristigen Betrachtungen und hoher Flottendurchdringung von Wasserstoffflugzeugen beschäftigen. So konnten u. a. bereits der volumetrische Durchfluss im Betan- kungsprozess, Art und Dauer des Spül- / Kühlvorganges sowie die Minimierung von Transferverlusten als wesentlichste Hebel identifiziert werden. Model-based assessment of hydro- gen infrastructure at airports Since the properties of liquid hydrogen (LH2) differ drastically from kerosene, radical developments are required to enable the use of green LH2 as an aviation energy carrier. Furthermore, as illustrated in the figure on page 59, for an in-depth under- standing of the potential of hydrogen in aviation, a holistic assess- ment is indispensable. In the context of a broader system transi- tion towards a hydrogen-based economy, not only ecological and economic criteria, but also development and scaling aspects of production, supply, and aircraft technologies demand considera- tion. In this regard, airport infrastructure represents a significant chal- lenge: handling of cryogenic LH2 at temperatures of – 253 °C necessitates suitable storage [1], distribution, and refuelling technology; losses through boil-off need to be minimised. At the same time, conflicts with operational processes are to be avoid- ed. Further, adequate infrastructure sizing entails taking into account demand patterns (figure on page 59). In order to ensure early identification of the hurdles involved and to develop strate- gies to overcome them despite the currently low maturity of the technologies involved, Bauhaus Luftfahrt performs model- based infrastructure assessments for various application cases. The studies conducted in the multilateral LuFo project 328H2-FC, for instance, focus on the comparatively near-term introduction of an LH2 regional aircraft, while a more long-term perspective is taken in several theses, in which a high fleet pene tration of hydrogen aircraft is assumed. The volumetric throughput of the refuelling equipment, type and duration of the purging and pre-cooling step, as well as minimising transfer losses have, thereby, been identified as major levers.

60 61 I I N O T A V A N E G O R D Y H Revolutionäre Antriebe in visionäre Wasserstoffflugzeuge integriert Auf der ILA Berlin 2022 stellte das Bauhaus Luftfahrt drei visio- näre Konzepte für wasserstoffbetriebene Verkehrsflugzeuge vor, die alle wichtigen Marktsegmente der kommerziellen Luft- fahrt abdecken – die Regional-, Kurz- und Langstrecke. Während die Transportaufgaben der Regional- und Kurzstrecke entlang der CleanSky-Spezifikationen definiert wurden, wurde die Lang- streckenanwendung aus dem Hyliner 2.0 des Bauhaus Luftfahrt (siehe Jahrbuch 2019) abgeleitet. Bei allen drei Flugzeugkonzepten wurden Technologiebausteine vorteilhaft kombiniert, um die Verwendung von flüssigem Was- serstoff (LH2) als primärer Energiequelle an Bord bestmöglich zu unterstützen. Insbesondere die Antriebssysteme wurden auf die spezifischen Bedürfnisse und Herausforderungen der jeweili- gen Leistungsklasse zugeschnitten: Das Regionalflug zeug nutzt Hochtemperatur-Polymerelektrolyt-Brenn stoff zellen für den An- trieb der Propeller am Rumpfheck. Das Lang strecken flugzeug verfügt über zwei Getriebefans unter den Flügeln, die mit Com- posite-Cycle-Engine-Kerntriebwerken ausgestattet sind. Ein im Rumpf integriertes Brennstoffzellensystem treibt den grenz- schichteinsaugenden Rumpf-Fan elektrisch an. Das Produktwas- ser der Brennstoffzelle wird dabei zurückgewonnen und in die Gasturbinentriebwerke eingespritzt, um deren Leistung und Emissionswerte zu verbessern. Ein ähnliches Brennstoffzellen / Gasturbinen-Hybridsystem mit Produkt wasserrück gewinnung wird auch beim Kurzstreckenflugzeug eingesetzt, allerdings mit einer 50/50-Leistungsaufteilung und nur einer einzigen Gastur- bine im hinteren Rumpfbereich. Erste Bewertungen der Energieeffizienz zeigen deutlich, dass diese Antriebskonzepte das Potenzial haben, die Widerstands- und Leergewichtsnachteile durch LH2 in allen drei Flugzeugklas- sen wirksam zu beheben. Revolutionary propulsion integrat- ed into visionary hydrogen aircraft A t ILA Berlin 2022, Bauhaus Luftfahrt revealed three vision- ary concepts for hydrogen-fuelled airliners covering all the key market segments in commercial air transport – the regional, short-range, and long-range aircraft classes. While the basic transport tasks for the regional and short-range cases were defined in accordance with the CleanSky aircraft specifications, the long-range application was derived from Bauhaus Luftfahrt’s Hyliner 2.0 (see Yearbook 2019). All three aircraft concepts featured carefully configured sets of technologies in order to best support the use of liquid hydrogen (LH2) as the primary source of on-board energy. Most notably, the propulsion systems were tailored to the specific needs and challenges of each power class: The regional aircraft uses high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells to power the aft-fuse- lage podded propellers. The long-range aircraft features two under-wing podded geared turbofan engines equipped with Composite Cycle Engine cores. An aft-fuselage integrated fuel cell system provides electric power to the boundary layer ingesting fuselage fan. The fuel cell product water is recycled and injected in the gas turbine engines in order to improve per- formance and emission characteristics. A similar fuel cell-gas turbine hybrid with product water recovery is also used within the short-range aircraft, however, featuring a 50 / 50 power split and a single gas turbine installed inside the aft-fuselage. Initial energy efficiency assessments clearly indicate the poten- tial for these individual propulsion concepts to eliminate the LH2-related drag and empty weight penalties in all three aircraft classes effectively.

To fully understand the potential of such air solu- tions, the required ecosystem of stakeholders, like users, vehicle manufacturers, vertiport and vehicle operators, authorities, governments, and societies, have to be holisti- cally considered, and benefits of adding them to existing transport systems have to be analysed. To what extent con- ventional aviation can benefit from these developments in the area of technologies, processes at the vertiports, flight management, regulations, certification, market actors, and business models is the subject of our ongoing research. Unser zusammenfassendes Whitepaper Mithilfe unserer mehr als fünfjährigen Forschung zur urbanen Luftmobilität (Urban Air Mobility – UAM) können wir die Leis- tungsfähigkeit von eVTOL-Vehikeln, Vertiports und Gesamttrans- portsystemen einschätzen. In unserem UAM-Whitepaper kom- men wir zu dem Schluss, dass UAM keine revolutionäre Neuerung für den städtischen Personenverkehr darstellt, jedoch das Potenzial für nachhaltige Geschäftsmodelle für OEMs und Betreiber aufzeigt. Die meisten Studien gehen aufgrund der zu erwartenden höheren Betriebskosten infolge von Infrastruktur- investitionen und Personalkosten von einem Marktanteil von etwa 1 % aus. Dieser UAM-Marktanteil wird sich nicht spürbar positiv auf die bestehenden Verkehrsträger auswirken und führt zu einer beträchtlichen Anzahl von Flügen (>>Zehntausende von täglichen Flügen), da die eVTOL-Technologie nur kleinere Nutzlasten (≤ 9 Passagier*innen) im urbanen Raum ermöglicht. Außerdem erfordert UAM eine relevante Bodeninfrastruktur, und der Gesamtdurchsatz eines UAM-Transportsystems ist durch Anzahl und Größe der Vertiports stark begrenzt. Da senkrechtes Starten und Landen die energieintensivste Art des Fliegens ist, sind der elektrische Energieverbrauch und die somit erforderli- chen Batteriemassen wesentlich höher. Daher ist die ökologi- sche Nachhaltigkeit von UAM im Vergleich zu allen anderen Ver- kehrsträgern, die elektrische Energie direkt nutzen, deutlich geringer. Während für UAM neue Ansätze, Prozesse und Technologien z. B. für Antriebssysteme, Autonomie, Zertifizierung, Infrastruk- tur, Betrieb, Geschäftsmodelle und neue Marktakteure erforscht werden, bewertet das Bauhaus Luftfahrt weiterhin das Innova- tionspotenzial für das bestehende Luftverkehrssystem. What’s Urban Air Mobility and what’s not? Our concluding White Paper Based on more than five years of research on passenger Urban Air Mobility (UAM), we are highlighting core aspects of UAM based on our scientific performance analysis of eVTOL vehicles, vertiports, and overall transport systems. Summaris- ing in our UAM White Paper, we conclude that UAM is no game changer within the urban passenger transport industry, however there are potential sustainable business cases for OEMs and operators. Most UAM studies converge towards a market share of around 1 % due to expected higher operating costs. Key cost drivers are personnel costs (e.g. pilots) and investment costs for new vertiport infrastructure. A 1 % UAM market share will not have a noticeable positive impact on existing modes of trans- port, and it is still going to result in a significant amount of flights (>>tens of thousands of daily flights), as vertical take-off and landing technology is highly constrained to smaller payloads (≤ 9 passengers). Also, UAM requires a significant amount of ground infrastructure, and the overall throughput of a UAM transport system is highly limited by the number and size of the vertiports. As one example, a vertiport the size of a football pitch can transport up to 150 passengers per hour. As vertical take-off and landing is the most energy-intensive way of flying, electric energy consumption and required battery masses are signifi- cantly higher. Therefore, UAM has a significantly lower sustain- ability performance compared to all other modes of transport using electric energy directly. As UAM explores novel developments and technologies, e. g. for propulsion systems, autonomy, certification, infrastructure, opera- tions, business models, and novel market actors, Bauhaus Luftfahrt continues to monitor and evaluate the transfer potential to the existing air transport system.

Es gibt jetzt einen Sektor für fortschrittliche Luftmobilität (Advanced Air Mobility – AAM), der mehrere Arten der Beför- derung von Passagieren und Fracht umfasst, von kleinen eVTOLs über regionale Luftmobilität (Regional Air Mobility – RAM) für 19 Passagier*innen bis hin zu einem regionalen Luftverkehrs- markt. Der Markt für 19-Sitzer ist seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre stetig geschrumpft, was vor allem darauf zurückzuführen ist, dass große Billigfluggesellschaften kostengünstiger als regionale Betreiber operieren konnten. In den letzten drei Jahrzehnten haben diese Fluggesellschaften ihre Flotten zunehmend um neue, effizientere Schmalrumpfflugzeuge erweitert, die sie von regionalen und mittelgroßen Flughäfen betreiben. Wenn die Gesamtbetriebskosten von Flugzeugen für die regionale Luft- mobilität (RAM) im Vergleich zur konventionellen Luftfahrt wett- bewerbsfähig sind, könnte ein Teil der bestehenden Nachfrage nach großen kommerziellen Kurzstreckenflügen auf RAM verla- gert werden. Der Beitrag zur Verringerung der Klimaauswirkun- gen des Luftverkehrs ist jedoch eher begrenzt. Nur 2 % der weltweit angebotenen Sitzplatzkapazität, die als Indikator für die direkten Emissionen herangezogen werden kann, wird auf Strecken von weniger als 400 km angeboten; auf Strecken von bis zu 800 km steigt dieser Anteil auf 10 %. Eine Umstellung auf kleinere Flugzeuge mit 19 Sitzplätzen würde zu einer deutlich höheren Anzahl an Flugbewegungen führen, um die gleiche Transportkapazität zu erreichen. Derzeit gibt es für stark einge- schränkte Flughäfen keine Anreize, kleinere Flugzeuge in Betracht zu ziehen, sodass kleine und regionale Flughäfen auf- grund ihrer geringen Auslastung am besten in der Lage wären, zusätzliche Flüge anzubieten. Regional Air Mobility – How to unlock a new gen- eration of mobility T here is now an Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sector that cov- ers several types of transport for both passengers and cargo, from small eVTOLs, to Regional Air Mobility (RAM) for 19 pas- sengers up to a regional air transport market. The 19-seater market has steadily decreased since the mid- 1990s, mainly due to large, low-cost airlines outperforming regional operators. Over the last three decades, these airlines have increasingly added new, more efficient narrow-body aircraft to their fleets, flying them from regional to medium airports. In the case of competitive total operating costs for RAM vehicles compared to conventional aviation, some existing demand for large commercial short-haul flights could be shifted to RAM. However, the contribution to reducing aviation’s climate impact is rather limited. Only 2 % of aviation’s global transport capacity, as a proxy of direct emissions, is offered on routes shorter than 400 km, increasing to 10 % on routes up to 800 km. A move towards smaller, 19-seater aircraft would result in significantly more air traffic to achieve the same transport capacity. Currently, there is no incentivisation for highly constrained airports to con- sider smaller aircraft, hence small and regional airports would be best positioned to serve extra flights due to their underutilisation. Key essential unlockers and underlying market drivers of a revival of Regional Air Mobility were analysed by Bauhaus Luftfahrt together with Roland Berger, and more information can be found in the White Paper “Regional Air Mobility – How to unlock a new generation of mobility”.

Szenarien als virtuelle Anwendungsfälle können die Entwicklung von cyber- physischen Systemen, wie z. B. von autonomen Luftfahrzeugen, unterstützen. Formalisierte Szenario-Beschreibungen ermögli- chen es, an der Mensch-Maschine-Schnittstelle verbal beschrie- bene Testfälle zur Technologieentwicklung so zu definieren, dass diese als maschinenlesbare Eingaben funktionieren. Zur nutzerfreundlichen und nachvollziehbaren Erstellung stan- dardisierter Szenarien haben wir im ADACORSA-Projekt ein For- mat auf Basis von XML (Extensible Markup Language) entwi- ckelt und durch einen Editor mit grafischer Benutzeroberfläche ergänzt. Die technische Implementierung des Szenario-Formats beinhaltet eine Szenario-Definitionsdatei, welche die Szenario- Bausteine beschreibt, einen spezialisierten „Behaviour Tree“, welcher die zeitliche und logische Abfolge von Ereignissen aus- löst und beobachtet, vom Nutzer bereitgestellte Dateien wie z. B. 3D-Modelle sowie nutzerdefinierte Skripte, um das Verhalten beliebiger Akteure zu beschreiben. Eine API(Application Program- ming Interface)-Bibliothek ermöglicht die Übersetzung von Sze- nario-Skripten in den zielanwendungsspezifischen Code. Ein Ziel der Arbeit ist die automatisierte Einrichtung und Durch- führung der realistischen Simulation von Drohnenmissionen in einer virtuellen Umgebung unter Berücksichtigung des U-Space- Frameworks zur Luftraumintegration. Scenario generation for virtual testing of autonomous air vehicles T he goal of developing autonomous systems is for machines to operate safely in complex situations. Scenarios as virtual use cases can support the development of such cyber-physical systems, as for example autonomous air vehicles. Based on sce- narios, verbally described test cases can be formalised in such a way as to function as machine-readable inputs at the human- machine interface to support technology development. For the user-friendly and traceable creation of standardised sce- narios, in the ADACORSA project we have developed a format based on XML (Extensible Markup Language), complemented by an editor with graphical user interface. The technical imple- mentation of the scenario format includes a scenario definition file that describes scenario building blocks, a specialised behav- iour tree that triggers and monitors the logical and temporal succession of events, user-provided files such as 3D models, as well as user-defined scripting to define the behaviour of arbitrary actors. An API (application programming interface) library ena- bles the translation of scenario scripts into code specific to the target application. A main goal of this work is to automate the setup and execution of realistic simulations of drone missions in a virtual environ- ment, considering especially the U-Space framework for airspace integration. The scenario format will be validated using relevant test cases. The code will be published as open source software for the robotics and drone communities to aid the development of safe autonomous air vehicles.

This research area is ded- icated to the development and initial evaluation of ultra-ef- ficient and potentially disruptive concepts for future sus- tainable aero propulsion systems. Therefore, technological developments with high relevance to propulsion systems are constantly monitored and advanced alternative propul- sion and power system configurations are conceived with a high level of technical creativity. Based on rigorous initial concept assessments, methodological demands for propul- sion system predesign and performance synthesis are iden- tified and recommendations for further research and devel- opment are formulated. Fortschrittliche Antriebssysteme haben sich zum zentralen Treiber der Flugzeuggesamtintegration entwickelt. 78 79 I S T P E C N O C N O S L U P O R P L E V O N Initiale Flugzeugauslegung mit Water­Enhanced­ Turbofan­Antrieben Im Forschungsbereich „Novel Propulsion Concepts“ wird das Triebwerkskonzept Water-Enhanced Turbofan (WET) untersucht, das die Einspritzung und Rückgewinnung von Wasser in den Kernstrom eines modernen Getriebefans vorsieht. Die Rück- gewinnung des Wassers aus dem Abgasstrahl erfolgt durch Kondensation und anschließende Flüssigkeitsabscheidung. Das flüssige Wasser wird mit geringem Energieaufwand hoch bedruckt, anschließend verdampft und in einer Dampfturbine auf das benötigte Druckniveau zur Einspritzung in die Brennkammer des Getriebefans entspannt. Die Dampfeinspritzung bewirkt eine drastische Reduktion der Stickoxidemissionen. Die benö- tigte Verdampfungswärme wird dem Abgasstrahl entnommen, während die Kondensationswärme dem Nebenstrom zugeführt wird. Auf diese Weise entsteht ein äußerst effizientes Flugan- triebskonzept mit geringen Stickoxidemissionen. Bei steigender Effizienz vergrößern sich Volumen und Gewicht des Antriebes signifikant aufgrund der Wärmeüberträger, was einen entschei- denden Einfluss auf die Anwendung im Flugzeug hat. Zusätzlich wird in niedrigen Flughöhen wegen der höheren Umgebungs- temperaturen eine externe Wasserzufuhr benötigt. Das macht ein angepasstes Flugzeugdesign sowie eine Bewertung des Antriebskonzeptes auf Missionsebene notwendig. Diese Bewertungsfähigkeit wurde am Bauhaus Luftfahrt auf- gebaut und für eine erste Auswertung bezogen auf eine typi- sche Mittelstreckenflugzeuganwendung angewandt. Weitere Arbeiten zur Optimierung der Bewertungsmethodik sowie der flugzeugintegrierten WET-Antriebsauslegung stehen noch aus und deuten auf ein Potenzial von 10 % geringerem Treibstoff- verbrauch hin. Initial aircraft design with water-enhanced turbofan engines In the research area “Novel Propulsion Concepts”, the water- enhanced turbofan (WET) engine concept is being investigat- ed, which involves the injection and recovery of water into the core stream of a modern geared turbofan. Water is recovered from the exhaust stream by condensation and subsequent liquid separation. The liquid water is highly pressurised with low ener- gy expenditure, then evaporated and expanded in a steam turbine to the required pressure level for injection into the combustion chamber of the geared turbofan. Steam injection results in a significant reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions. The required heat of vaporisation is taken from the exhaust gas stream, while the heat of condensation is supplied to the bypass stream. This results in an extremely efficient aircraft engine concept with low nitrogen oxide emissions. With increasing efficiency, the volume and weight of the propulsion system increase significantly due to the heat exchangers, which has a crucial influence on the application in the aircraft. In addition, at low altitudes, an external water supply is needed due to the higher ambient temperatures. This necessitates an adapted air- craft design as well as an evaluation of the propulsion concept at aircraft mission level. This evaluation capability was established at Bauhaus Luftfahrt and applied for a first assessment based on a typical medium- range aircraft application. Further work on optimising the evalu- ation methodology as well as the aircraft-integrated WET propul- sion design is still pending and indicates a potential of 10 % lower fuel consumption.

Evaluating this potential requires the consideration of key technological advances and hurdles, infrastructural demands as well as the material avail- ability and life-cycle emissions of electrochemical energy storage devices. Furthermore, studying new market opportu- nities and developing technical concepts to meet the key challenges of (hybrid-)electric energy and propulsion sys- tems – such as electric waste heat management – contribute to a holistic understanding of the future role of (hybrid-)elec- tric aviation. Die Verwendung signifikanter elektrischer Energiemengen für Flugantriebe eröffnet neue Gestaltungsräume für effizi- ente Fluggeräte. Eine Bewertung dieses Potenzials erfordert die Berücksichtigung wichtiger technologischer Fortschritte und Hürden, infrastruktureller Anforderungen sowie des Rohstoffbedarfs und der Lebenszyklusemissionen elektro- chemischer Speicher. 84 85 I I N O T A V A C R T C E L E ) ­ I I D R B Y H ( Passagierpräferenzen für hybridelektrische Flugzeuge in Deutschland Kurzstreckenflüge mit hybridelektrischen Flugzeugen (HEA) bie- ten viele Möglichkeiten, wie z. B. mehr Komfort und Zeiteffizienz beim Erreichen von Regionalflughäfen. Aufbauend auf unserer Studie zur Akzeptanz von hybridelektrischen Flugzeugen in Deutschland haben wir eine zweite Befragung zu den Präferen- zen von Passagier*innen für fünf Verkehrsmittel im europäischen Regionalverkehr, einschließlich HEA, durchgeführt. Ein zentrales Ziel war es, Erkenntnisse darüber zu gewinnen, welche Eigen- schaften die Befragten an diesem Verkehrsmittel schätzen, und potenzielle Nutzersegmente zu identifizieren. Auf Basis einer repräsentativen Stichprobe der deutschen Bevölkerung wur- den mehr als 1700 gültige Antworten ausgewertet. Generell werden HEA als attraktiver wahrgenommen als konventionelle, mit Kerosin betriebene Flugzeuge. Auf vergleichsweise langen Strecken werden HEA auch dem Fernbus vorgezogen. Die statis- tische Analyse zeigt, dass Geschäftsreisende, Vielflieger*innen, jüngere Befragte, Befragte mit höherem Einkommen und Befragte mit einem generellen Vertrauen in neue Mobilitätstechnologien HEA bevorzugen. Die ermittelte Zahlungsbereitschaft (WTP) zeigt, dass die Fahrgäst*innen bereit sind, durchschnittlich 0,78 EUR für eine Minute Reisezeitersparnis zu zahlen. Bei Geschäftsreisen- den liegt die WTP um 50 % höher als bei Privatreisenden. Somit können Geschäftsreisende die ersten Nutzer*innen bei einer Markteinführungsphase sein. Interessanterweise hat das mit HEA verbundene Potenzial zur Verringerung der Klimaauswir- kungen des Reisens keinen signifikanten Einfluss auf die Ent- scheidungen der Reisenden und rangiert im Vergleich zu anderen entscheidenden Kriterien wie Reisezeit und -kosten auf einem niedrigen Niveau. A holistic evaluation of electric flying. Holistische Bewertung des elektrischen Fliegens. Das zugrundeliegende Vorhaben wurde mit Mitteln des Bundes- ministeriums für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz unter dem Förder- kennzeichen 20E1916B gefördert. Passenger pre- ferences on hybrid- electric aircraft in Germany Short-haul services, which could be based on hybrid-electric aircraft (HEA) concepts, provide many opportunities, such as increased comfort and higher time efficiency in reaching regional airports. Following our previous study regarding pas- senger acceptance of hybrid-electric aeroplanes in Germany, we have conducted a follow-up survey on passengers’ preferences for five transport modes providing regional transport services within Europe, including HEA. A central aim was to gain insights into what attributes respondents value about these means of transport and to identify the potential user segments. We ana- lysed more than 1700 valid responses based on a representative sample of German residents. In general, HEA are perceived as more attractive than conventionally kerosene-fuelled airliners. For comparatively long routes, passengers also prefer HEA to long-distance buses. The statistical analysis shows that busi- ness travellers, frequent travellers, and respondents who are younger, with high income, and with trust towards new mobility technology tend to prefer HEA. A calculated generalised willing- ness to pay (WTP) shows that passengers are willing to pay 0.78 EUR on average to reduce one minute of travel time. Busi- ness travellers show a 50 % higher WTP than private travellers, indicating that business travellers could be the early adopters in the market entry phase. Interestingly, the potential for reducing the climate impact of travelling associated with HEA does not significantly affect travellers’ decisions and ranks low compared to other decisive criteria, such as travel time and costs.

86 87 I I N O T A V A C R T C E L E ) ­ I I D R B Y H ( Integrierte Bewertung hybrider Antriebssysteme kleiner Luftfahrzeuge Hybridelektrische und wasserstoffbasierte Antriebssysteme gelten als wichtige Bausteine für die Dekarbonisierung der Luft- fahrt. Insbesondere kleinere Luftfahrzeuge sind aufgrund ge- ringerer Leistungs- und Reichweite-Anforderungen aktuell Gegenstand von Forschung und Entwicklung: einerseits zu Demonstrations- und Erprobungszwecken, andererseits aber bereits mit konkreten Zielen für marktreife Produkte. Im Rah- men des nationalen Luftfahrtforschungsprogrammes wurden im Projekt „Integrierte Bewertung elektrohybrider Antriebssys- teme für kleine Luftfahrzeuge“ (IVekLu) entsprechende Vorent- wurfswerkzeuge für Antrieb und Luftfahrzeug entwickelt. Die kommerzielle Software GasTurb™ wurde um Modelle für elektrische Antriebskomponenten, wasserstoffbetriebene Brenn- stoffzellensysteme und Flüssigwasserstofftanks erweitert. Außer dem wurden Methoden zur Auslegung von Thermalma- nagementsystemen für Batterien entwickelt. Durch die großen abzuführenden Wärmemengen ist eine detaillierte Modellierung dieser Systeme bereits im Vorentwurf wichtig. Überdies wur- den die bestehenden Flugzeugentwurfsprozesse um Metho- den zur Abbildung von relevanten Antriebsintegrationsaspekten erweitert. So ist hier beispielsweise die Wasserstoffantriebsin- tegration oder die Abbildung der aerodynamischen Interaktion von Propellern und Flügel behandelt worden. Zur Demonstration der neu entwickelten Methoden wurden zwei repräsentative Luftfahrzeug-Konfigurationen modelliert und unter- sucht: ein Zubringerflugzeug mit seriell-hybridem Antriebsstrang und Blown Wing für neun Passagier*innen sowie eine senk- rechtstartfähige Kipprotor-Konfiguration mit Wasserstoff-Brenn- stoffzellenantrieb und Boost-Batterien mit vier Sitzen. Integrated assess- ment of hybrid propulsion systems of small aircraft Hybrid-electric and hydrogen-based propulsion systems are considered important building blocks for the decarbonisa- tion of aviation. Especially smaller aircraft are currently the sub- ject of research and development due to lower performance and range requirements: on the one hand for demonstration and testing purposes, but on the other hand already with specific ambitions for market-ready products. As part of the Federal Avia- tion Research Programme, appropriate preliminary design meth- ods for propulsion and aircraft have been developed in the project “Integrated assessment of electro-hybrid propulsion systems for small aircraft” (IVekLu). The commercial GasTurb™ software was extended to include models for electric propulsion components, hydrogen-powered fuel cell systems, and liquid hydrogen tanks. Furthermore, meth- ods for the design of thermal management systems for batter- ies have been developed. Due to the large amounts of heat to be dissipated, detailed modelling of these systems is important at the preliminary design stage. Moreover, the existing aircraft design processes have been extended to include methods to model relevant propulsion integration aspects. For example, hydrogen propulsion integration or the reflection of the aerody- namic propeller wing interaction have been addressed. To demonstrate the developed methods, studies of two repre- sentative aircraft configurations have been conducted: a feeder aircraft with serial-hybrid powertrain and blown wing for nine pas- sengers and a vertical take-off tiltrotor configuration with hydrogen fuel cell propulsion and boost batteries with four seats.

88 89 I I N O T A V A C R T C E L E ) ­ I I D R B Y H ( Regionalflugzeug mit hybridelektrischem Wellenleistungs­ triebwerk Im IMOTHEP-Projekt wurde ein Turboprop-Konzept mit einer hybridelektrischen Antriebsarchitektur hinsichtlich seines Potenzi- als zur Reduktion des Treibstoffbedarfes untersucht. Spezifisch wurde ein Wellenleistungstriebwerk mit elektrischer Unterstüt- zung betrachtet. Die Gesamteffizienz des Antriebsstranges konnte gegenüber der konventionellen Referenz deutlich verbessert wer- den, jedoch auf Kosten einer höheren Systemmasse. Die Zielsetzung war es, die Herausforderungen, die durch eine zusätzliche elektrische Energiequelle entstehen, zu adressieren. Beispielsweise wurden bei der Auslegung des Antriebssystems Fehlerfälle berücksichtigt, die zu einem Verlust der elektrischen Leistung führen können. Zudem wurde ein innovatives Thermal- managementkonzept erforscht, welches einen konventionellen Stauluft- mit einem Flügelflächenwärmetauscher kombiniert, um die Abwärme der elektrischen Komponenten effizient abzufüh- ren. Integrierte Flugzeugvorentwurfsstudien zielten darauf ab, die Unsicherheiten bei der Analyse des neuartigen Flugzeugkon- zeptes zu verringern. Die finale Konfiguration erreichte eine Treib- stoffreduktion von 9,6 % für eine typische Mission über 200 See- meilen (nmi) im Vergleich zur konventionellen Referenz. Dabei wurden 15 % der erforderlichen Leistung während Start, Steigflug und Reiseflug über eine Batterie bereitgestellt. Bei der 600-nmi- Designmission stieg jedoch der Kraftstoffverbrauch. Es zeigte sich, dass das Treibstoffreduktionspotenzial durch die spezifische Energie der Batterie begrenzt wird und die Wahl einer optimalen Missionshybridisierungsstrategie der Schlüssel für eine maximale Treibstoffreduzierung ist. Die finalen Ergebnisse gingen in die Erstellung einer Roadmap für hybridelektrische Flugzeuge als Projektgesamtergebnis ein. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 875006. https://www.imothep-project.eu/ A regional turboprop aircraft with hybrid- electric turboshaft assistance W ithin the IMOTHEP project, Bauhaus Luftfahrt evaluated the fuel burn reduction potential of a regional turboprop concept with a hybrid-electric propulsion architecture for entry into service in 2035+. An electrically assisted turboshaft engine was the focus of the investigation. Using electrical assistance could significantly improve overall propulsion efficiency at the cost of increased overall propulsion system mass. The aircraft configuration addressed the challenges associated with an additional electrical energy source. Example, failure cases that can lead to the loss of electrical power were consid- ered for propulsion system sizing, since this can have a negative impact on engine performance in crucial flight phases. Addition- ally, an innovative thermal management concept was investigat- ed. It was found that combining a conventional ram air heat exchanger with a wing surface heat exchanger leads to a smaller penalty compared to a conventional thermal management sys- tem. Integrated aircraft design studies aimed to narrow down uncertainties when analysing the potential of hybrid-electric propulsion. The final configuration achieved a block fuel reduc- tion of 9.6 % for a 200 nautical mile (nmi) typical mission com- pared to a conventional reference aircraft. Here, 15 % of the required power was supplied electrically through an on-board battery during take-off, climb, and cruise. For the 600 nmi design mission, however, mission block fuel increased. It was found that the limiting factor for fuel reduction potential is the battery’s gravimetric energy density and choosing an opti- mal mission hybridisation strategy is key to achieve maximum fuel burn reduction. The final results served as a reference for the project’s hybrid-electric propulsion roadmap.

Grants from the Free State of Bavaria (1.7 million EUR) and membership fees (1.1 million EUR) remained stable. Revenues from publicly funded third-party projects decreased by −172 kEUR (−13 %) to 1.1 million EUR in 2022. This income is attributable to work on 16 research projects funded by the European Union, the German Federal Government, or the Free State of Bavaria. The decrease is primarily due to the completion of two large projects in 2021 funded by the European Union and the late start of three projects funded by the German Federal Government in 2022. Im Geschäftsjahr 2022 stiegen die Einnahmen des Bauhaus Luftfahrt um +6,1 % auf 5,1 Mio. EUR. Die Zuwendungen des Freistaates Bayern (1,7 Mio. EUR) und die Mitgliedsbeiträge (1,1 Mio. EUR) blieben stabil. Die Einnahmen aus öffentlich geförderten Drittmittelprojekten sanken um −172 TEUR (−13 %) auf 1,1 Mio. EUR im Jahr 2022.
