Hydrogen’s emission-saving potentials for the aviation sector will not be fully developed by the mid-century. The impact strongly depends on its potential for a speedy penetration of key market segments, namely single-aisle and wide-body aircraft types. Therefore, highly advanced hydrogen-based propulsion system solutionsand their synergistic integration with the airframe need to be developed to cut both non-CO2 emissions and in-flight energy consumption. Once technologically ready for service entry, aircraft and propulsion production ramp-up will then determine hydrogen’s leverage on aviation’s climate impact.
